Kand tree

This article covers the Canon version of this subject.  Click here for Wookieepedia's article on the Legends version of this subject.

"The fruit from his kand trees paired perfectly with Dorin zand nuts in this fragrant bread. You won't be able to resist its sweet aroma—and you won't even need a rebreather to enjoy it!"
―Strono Tuggs, The Ultimate Cookbook[1]

The kand tree was a type of fruit-bearing tree grown in the orchard of a Kel Dor on the Expansion Region planet Dorin, a world with a helium-rich atmosphere. The orchard owner provided zand nuts and some of the fruit from his kand trees to the Artiodac chef Strono Tuggs during a culinary tour of the galaxy that Tuggs took[1] between 34 ABY and 35 ABY.[2] The Artiodac then used the fruit and nuts to make a fragrant bread known as Kand and Zand Rolls that he included the recipe for in his third cookbook, The Ultimate Cookbook, which was published[1] in 35 ABY.[2]

Behind the scenes

In the current Star Wars canon, kand trees were mentioned in the 2023 Star Wars: The Ultimate Cookbook, a recipe book written by Jenn Fujikawa and Marc Sumerak. The fruit in the out-of-universe recipe for the bread consists of dried apricots and dried cranberry.[1] In the Star Wars Legends continuity, the kand tree was mentioned in the Galactic Campaign Guide, a 2003 supplement for the Star Wars Roleplaying Game written by Peter M. Schweighofer and J.D. Wiker and published by Wizards of the Coast.[3]

  2. 2.0 2.1 Star Wars: The Ultimate Cookbook establishes that the publishing of the in-universe The Ultimate Cookbook and the culinary tour that preceded it occurred following the publishing of The Official Black Spire Outpost Cookbook and prior to the destruction of Kijimi. It also establishes that The Ultimate Cookbook was published following the Festival of the Ancestors that occurred during that time period. Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge: The Official Black Spire Outpost Cookbook further establishes that The Official Black Spire Outpost Cookbook was published concurrently with the First Order's search for the Resistance base on Batuu, which Star Wars: Timelines dates to 34 ABY. In addition, Timelines dates the Festival of the Ancestors and the destruction of Kijimi to 35 ABY, meaning the tour must have taken place between 34 ABY and 35 ABY and The Ultimate Cookbook must have been published in 35 ABY.
