Synopsis
One day, on the Ned and the Needlefish tour bus, Ned comes out of the backroom and has a six-layered wig on. His bandmates tease him, and one accidentally chucks the wig out the window. The wig eventually lands on SpongeBob, he notices it, then shows Patrick who thinks it was "brain eating alien," and rubs it forcefully on his rock. SpongeBob tells him it isn't then Patrick thinks SpongeBob was wearing a cotton candy hat, chewing a piece off. SpongeBob tells Patrick that he's wearing a wig, the latter laugh hysterically before he takes his weekly condiment soak.

Later, SpongeBob enters the Krusty Krab with everyone laughing at him thinking they're laughing with him. He goes into the kitchen to make Krabby Patties, while scratching his wig, causing a lot of wig hair to fall on the meat patty grossing out Squidward. Mr. Krabs has SpongeBob to wear a hairnet following this. Sandy walks in the Krusty Krab while SpongeBob is delivering food. She is about to ask SpongeBob about Karate practice but laughs hysterically after seeing his wig. SpongeBob thinks everyone's jealous then hides.
Meanwhile, Ned's band is in a record dealers place, where their manager fires them because of Ned's baldness. That night, the Krusty Krab closes before SpongeBob goes home when he's mopping the floor using his wig. Squidward tells SpongeBob that the whole town is laughing him, but he doesn't get his point. Mr. Krabs tells him to stop wearing the wig or not come back until then.
The next day, Sandy walks to SpongeBob's house, to try to talk to him again. She knocks on his now twice tall door and SpongeBob still wearing the wig with a grin. They walk though Bikini Bottom while having a talk. While watching a movie about wigs at Reef Cinema, they sit in the front row with the wig blocking the entire screen, causing the patrons to form a mob and chase SpongeBob and Sandy out of the movie theater through riot.

Later on, SpongeBob and Sandy are walking through fields, where SpongeBob finally realizes how embarrassed he was with the wig and how much of a burden it was to others, so he lets go of the wig and it flies away. Ned is then seen walking through Bikini Bottom, screaming about how his career is ruined when the wig flies in his face and Ned realizes it's his old one, causing him to rejoice.
The next day, SpongeBob is down, walking through town and seeing everyone with Ned's wig, including Patrick who lifts his arm and SpongeBob sees mini wigs attached to his armpit. Feeling betrayed by this, he talked to a fish and helped SpongeBob, after showing a sign with Ned's band, realized that he was cool before anyone else. A dejected SpongeBob wishes he had a wig before Patrick lets SpongeBob borrow one, with the episode ending with him saying to wash it before he returns it.

- This is the first episode that Dave Cunningham said he worked on,[6] although he was credited as a storyboard artist as early as "Chimps Ahoy," so it's likely that he did his revisions on storyboards out of production order.
- This episode marks the final usage of the APM track "Stack of Leis" for 12 and a half years, until it returned in the season 12 episode "Stormy Weather."
Cultural references
- This episode's title is a pun on the word 'starstruck', with 'wig' replacing 'star'.
- The other members of Ned and the Needlefish play Hot potato with Ned's hair.
- Two film posters are seen when SpongeBob and Sandy are going in and out of the movie theater; "My Hair Lady" and "From Hair To Eternity" - parodies of the 1964 film My Fair Lady and the 1953 film From Here to Eternity, respectively.
- Incidentally Ernest Borgnine had a role in From Here to Eternity.
Errors
- Patrick eats a part of SpongeBob's wig, but in the next shot, his wig is full again.

- When SpongeBob gives Squidward the hair patty, the kitchen window narrows immensely.

- In the scene where SpongeBob and Sandy are walking in the fields, one can see that as they walk up toward the cliff, Sandy's tail isn't present anymore for the rest of the episode.
