Synopsis
In the beginning of the episode, Mr. Krabs rushes to the Krusty Krab while shouting and panicking like a maniac, telling his customers of the return of the hooks. The other fish ignore him, while SpongeBob is confused, and Mr. Krabs tells him that he has to try not to go near a hook, or he will be brought up to the surface and eaten or sold at a Gift Shop. As SpongeBob returns to the grill, Patrick shows up from outside the window, claiming that a carnival has come to town, insisting that SpongeBob comes with him. He agrees, assuming that he's not quitting work but just taking a break.

The two friends go to the carnival, but to SpongeBob's horror, the "carnival" is really the site of the hooks that Mr. Krabs tried to warn everyone about. Patrick deliberately hooks himself and shoots up towards the surface. SpongeBob panics with concern until Patrick returns, explaining that he jumped off and floated down just before he reached the surface. Ignoring what Mr. Krabs said, SpongeBob then plays "hooky" with Patrick.
Meanwhile, at the Krusty Krab, Squidward has taken SpongeBob's place as the fry cook for the time being and isn't making the Krabby Patties correctly, causing a mob of hungry customers to criticize his poor cooking skills. Mr. Krabs bursts out of his office to confront the ruckus and upon being told by Squidward that SpongeBob has taken a break, says that no employee at the Krusty Krab has done so since the Chum famine of '59; but when Squidward reiterates what he said, Mr. Krabs becomes angry at SpongeBob for disobeying his work policy and goes to look for him while leaving Squidward at the mercy of angry and hungry customers. Mr. Krabs then finds SpongeBob at Fish Hooks Park playing on the hooks with Patrick, shocked at his disobedience. He then scolds the duo for their dangerous behavior, adding in that failing to float back down would also result in them vacuum-packed in a can of tuna and the smell of mayonnaise. SpongeBob and Patrick apologize, and Mr. Krabs has them make a "sailor's promise" to never to go near the hooks again.

The next day, SpongeBob is heading off to work and keeps his promise about not playing on the hooks, until Patrick appears and pressures him to ignore Mr. Krabs and play on them anyway. As much as he is tempted, SpongeBob refuses, knowing what consequences pursue him should he break his promise. Eventually though, seeing a hook in the middle of the street, ceases his resistance and then starts playing on it. Unfortunately for him, this time he is unable to get off of it, as the hook is attached very tightly to his pants and runs to the Krusty Krab panicking. At the Krusty Krab, Mr. Krabs has brought water to Pearl and her friends, who are visiting, when SpongeBob goes to confront him outside the restaurant to tell him about his current predicament. Mr. Krabs tries to confirm whether SpongeBob broke his promise and continued playing on the hooks anyway, with the latter trying to hide the hook in his pants from view until he finally admits to doing so. SpongeBob asks Mr. Krabs if there was any way for him to get free. Mr. Krabs tells him that there was only one solution: take his pants off... In front of the girls. Seeing that there's no other way out, SpongeBob reluctantly takes off his pants, revealing that the hook not only got his pants, but his underwear as well. SpongeBob realizes he has to take off his underwear to save himself, but he is very hesitant to do so due to his embarrassment. As he is about to be reeled in by the fisherman, he hangs onto the clam pole as a self-restraint method before the hook tears off the underwear, sending SpongeBob flying onto the Krusty Krab doors naked, with Pearl and her friends laughing at him.
SpongeBob runs back to his house, horrified and humiliated. Squidward returns to the Krusty Krab with a fishing pole and SpongeBob's underwear, indicating that Mr. Krabs, Squidward, and Pearl got together to teach SpongeBob a lesson about hooks, and Mr. Krabs has seen that SpongeBob will never play with them ever again. As the episode comes to a conclusion, Patrick is dropped off at his house by the bus, trapped inside a tuna can, asking if somebody has a can opener to free him out of there.

Production notes
- After being shown a cel from this episode, Vincent Waller recalled a story his time from working on this episode: after showing Sherm Cohen his drawing of Patrick with tons of hooks in his mouth, Cohen laughed so hard he nearly fell out of his chair.[7]

Trivia
General
- According to Apple TV UK, this episode's working title was "Hooks."[8]
- However, this could also be a simple typo.
- This is the first episode (in terms of packaging order) to be released in the 21st century and the third millennium.
- This is the first episode to use the APM track "Dramatic Encounter."
- This is the second episode where Squidward takes SpongeBob's role of the fry cook; the first was "Pickles." As in the latter, he continues to have terrible cooking skills in this episode.
- This episode's title has a double meaning and works on two levels: "Hooky" is a term for Truancy, skipping work or school, referring to SpongeBob skipping work, and it also refers to, and is a pun, of the fish hooks that he and Patrick were playing on.
- Patrick mentions the episode title when he says "You're not going to work today. We're gonna go play hooky."
- Patrick telling SpongeBob he's going the wrong way, and SpongeBob replying he always goes to work that way, is an inside-joke to SpongeBob's route to the Krusty Krab changing back and forth between going to the left of Conch Street and going to the right.
- There is a Plug-and-Play TV game of SpongeBob Games by Jakks Pacific that includes a mini-game based on this episode. In the game, SpongeBob must protect everyone, even an unusually large Plankton, from the hooks. Despite Plankton's appearance, letting him get hooked ends the game.
- A brief clip from this episode appears in a 2003 Burger King commercial promoting SpongeBob toys at the time.
- There is a SpongeBob song based on this episode called "Ridin' the Hook."

- In a promotion leading up to the release of Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius, the title character of said movie appeared in the lower-right-hand corner during a rerun of this episode and, using one of his inventions, temporarily transformed the cartoon into a puppet show during the scene where Mr. Krabs is making SpongeBob and Patrick recite an oath that he is giving.[9][10]
- Mr. Krabs says that nobody has taken a break at the Krusty Krab since the "Chum Famine of '59," but SpongeBob had taken a break seemingly with Mr. Krabs' permission in "F.U.N." and was even sent home in "Suds" when Mr. Krabs learned that SpongeBob was too unwell to work. Squidward even went on an impromptu vacation without protest from Mr. Krabs in "Squeaky Boots."
- The last two examples can be excused under the assumption that Mr. Krabs meant taking a break in the middle of a workday, as opposed to not going to work for a day.
- When SpongeBob fruit snacks were originally released, an advertisement for them featured the snacks acting out a part of this episode along with some scenes from the actual episode playing on a TV in the background.[11][12]
- Hooks are also featured in many SpongeBob SquarePants video games and other episodes, such as the video games Battle for Bikini Bottom, The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie video game, Dutchman's Dash, Battle for Bikini Bottom: Rehydrated, and numerous others.
- There are three online games based on this episode called Jelly Jumpin' Jamboree, Hook Jumping, and Hooked on You!
- There is also a book based on this episode called Get Hooked!
- This episode was on the Fisher-Price InteracTV DVD SpongeBob's Krusty Krab Adventures.
- In the console version of the Lights, Camera, Pants! video game, there is an art gallery with a painting that is based on this episode.
- Independent film stars John Lurie and Jim Jarmusch cameo as the fishermen. The live-action scenes used for these people are archive recordings from the 1991 television series Fishing with John.

- An image of a surprised SpongeBob saying, "Patrick!" after Patrick gets dragged by a hook was used for an error screen on the Game Boy Color game Legend of the Lost Spatula, seen if the game is inserted into the original Game Boy, Game Boy Pocket, Game Boy Light, or the Super Game Boy peripheral for the SNES.[13]
- In the scene where SpongeBob returns to the kitchen under the box, Squidward still has the trash bin over his head for "waste basket inspection" even though Mr. Krabs is no longer trying to warn him about the hooks.
- The scene where Patrick puts a bunch of hooks into his mouth saying, "Does this look dangerous?" is cut in the UK and Ireland.[14]
- Despite this, in the UK and Ireland airings of "The Patrick Star Fan Favorites Special," the full scene of Patrick with all the hooks in his mouth is left intact.[15]
- This was Sherm Cohen's last episode as a writer and storyboard director.
- This episode spawned several internet memes, including:
- The scene with Incidental 41 looking over at SpongeBob as he slides back into the kitchen has become an internet meme.
- Patrick's quote "Does this look dangerous?" has become a popular internet meme.
- This episode was paired up with different episodes in different marathons:
- During the Best Day Ever marathon, this episode was paired up with "New Student Starfish."[16]
- On the August 9, 2010 airing, this episode was paired up with "SpongeGuard on Duty."[17]
Dub facts
- In the early Polish, Norwegian, and recent Indonesian airings, the scene where Patrick eats the cheese off the hook and has all hooks in his mouth was cut due to reckless behavior. In the later airings, the scene was restored for unknown reasons.
- In the Filipino dub, after SpongeBob says, "What could be worse than that?" Mr. Krabs says, "They will sell you." instead of "Gift shops."[citation needed]
Cultural references
- Patrick saying, "High ho, Silverfish… away!" is in reference to the line "High ho Silver, away!" from The Lone Ranger theme song.
Errors

- Even though SpongeBob, when hooked by Squidward, is being dragged away from the Krusty Krab, Squidward is standing in the restaurant.
- During one scene, there is a plastic sheet (the sort used in traditional animation to ink and paint non-background elements), that appears to have some damage to it. Thus, the damage of the slightly damaged plastic part makes the scene look like there is a random see-through jellyfish on the screen.
- When Mr. Krabs says, "Squidward," the latter moves his lips to what Mr. Krabs said.
- Squidward's fishing line is small in the end, and the end of the fishing pole is at the Krusty Krab. When SpongeBob is attached to it, the line is massively long, and the fishing pole ends to the top of the ocean.
- When SpongeBob encounters the lone hook on the way to the Krusty Krab, its massive in size, big enough for him to sit in it, but upon being hooked to his pants, it shrinks slightly, then when Squidward reveals to be the one operating the fishing pole, the hook has grown smaller.
- When SpongeBob's underwear is attached to the hook, they are hooked through the back of them and they tear off, but when Squidward is revealed to be the one using the fishing pole, SpongeBob's underwear is intact and the hook is now hooked through the front of them.

- The Help Wanted sign disappears after SpongeBob is flung to the door.
- SpongeBob's tongue disappears when he screams in horror at being naked in front of Pearl and her friends.
- Before SpongeBob takes off his pants, his pants are the only thing that is hooked to the fish hook. Later in the scene, his underwear is hooked as well.
- When SpongeBob runs away from the Krusty Krab whining in embarrassment, the Chum Bucket is missing.
- When SpongeBob is freaking out after being hooked, a straight road connects right up to the Krusty Krab door, when in reality, the Krusty Krab is connected to a side road.
- The fishing hook and SpongeBob's legs are missing when SpongeBob shows up by the Krusty Krab door after Mr. Krabs is seen giving drinks to Pearl and her friends.
