Hooks are a fishing equipment object used by the fishermen. They first appear in the episode "Karate Choppers" and later play a major role in the episode "Hooky." They are known to be very harmful toward the Bikini Bottomites and other sea creatures.
Description
The hooks at Fish Hooks Park contain plastic fish attached to them that vary in appearance and have cubed cheese attached to them to lure fish into going on them.
Role in series
"Karate Choppers"
A fish is seen using a fishing hook by constantly flinging it in and out of the water. The performance of this action reminds SpongeBob and Sandy of karate, a sport that they are prohibited from engaging in or else SpongeBob will get fired from his job.
"Hooky"
At the Krusty Krab, Mr. Krabs warns everyone that the hooks have returned to Bikini Bottom and urges everyone to avoid them at all costs. Mr. Krabs tells SpongeBob that if he gets on a hook, he'll be reeled up to the surface and go through something terrible, like becoming a trinket at a gift shop or being sealed in a can of tuna.
Later on, Patrick tells SpongeBob that the carnival is back in town and encourages him to leave work so they can have fun together. However, the "carnival" is revealed to be Fish Hooks Park, which shocks SpongeBob as he recognizes the attractions as the hooks that Mr. Krabs warned him about.
Patrick eats the free cheese attached to the hooks and plays on them. SpongeBob initially resists, but gives in to peer pressure and joins Patrick in playing on the hooks. They swiftly manage to avoid near-death experiences possible. Mr. Krabs witnesses what they are doing and vehemently tries to get their promise not to play on the hooks through reenacting a ritual.
The following day, Patrick breaks his promise and plans on playing in Fish Hooks Park again, encouraging SpongeBob to skip work and do the same. However, SpongeBob refuses and keeps his promise. Upon walking to work, SpongeBob encounters a hook in the middle of the street and tries to keep his promise, but gives up and plays on the hooks once again.
The hook manages to become unremovable from his pants. SpongeBob then shows up late to work and tells Mr. Krabs about the hook; he admits that he was playing on them despite promising not to. As comeuppance, SpongeBob is forced to remove both his pants and his underwear and suffer the humiliation of Pearl and her friends laughing at his nudity as he runs home in embarrassment.
Meanwhile, after playing on the hooks for so long, Patrick is dropped off to his house by the bus, trapped inside a tuna can.
"Something Smells"
Two fish commit suicide by reeling themselves up with a hook after smelling SpongeBob's breath.
"Don't Look Now"
The movie that SpongeBob and Patrick go to see, Fisherman 4: Attack of the Hook, is a horror film about a fisherman reeling fish out of the ocean using a hook.
Later that night, Squidward tries to prank SpongeBob and Patrick by dressing up as the fisherman from the movie and threatening to turn them into fish sticks, scaring the pair with hooks.
"The Night Patty"
The Fisherman uses a hook on SpongeBob with a fishing rod to get steal money from him, but he resists and ends up deep-frying him. SpongeBob ends up discovering that the Fisherman steals money from everyone every night as part of a tradition.
"Knock Knock, Who's There?"
SpongeBob is surfing channels through Mr. Krabs' TV and finds a black-and-white horror movie involving an animated hook playing on one of the channels. He settles on watching it until he gets too scared and turns the TV off. The hook seemed to have been visiting an old abandoned house.
Role in video games
The hooks are seen during the bungee-jumping challenges SpongeBob must perform in the SpongeBob SquarePants video games Battle for Bikini Bottom, Battle for Bikini Bottom: Rehydrated, The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie, and The Cosmic Shake.
They are also used as transportation sources to reach a destined height in Revenge of the Flying Dutchman, in which SpongeBob places his jellyfish net onto hooks to ride them.
In Lights, Camera, Pants! and Dutchman's Dash, they can be used as a ride, while in other games, they are used as hazards, such as Jelly Jumpin' Jamboree and Drawn to Life: SpongeBob SquarePants Edition.
Trivia
- In "Karate Choppers," the fish dipping a hook in the water under the bridge of Seashell Park would technically be considered cannibalism.
- SpongeBob has some fish hooks in his house, specifically in his living room for decoration.
