Mr. Schmitz (originally named Mr. Smith in the Japanese version) is a character that appears in the anime series Sonic X. He is an old, retired man and a former agent of the Guardian Units of the Nations who regretfully shot and killed Maria Robotnik fifty years ago on the Space Colony ARK.
Appearance
Mr. Schmitz is an old man with fair hair and thick eyebrows. For attire, he wears a white shirt with a red tie and a blue tank top.
History
Anime
Past
50 years ago, Schmitz was a G.U.N. agent. He and his fellow troops were called onto the space station to eliminate or capture anyone related to Project Shadow and ordered the scientists to put their hands up without any explanation as he and the G.U.N. agents did what they were told. Suddenly, he spotted Maria Robotnik, who ran away from the scene as Schmitz told her to stop. He eventually found her with her hands on a handle switch, intending to release the creature and set him free. Despite him pointing his gun at Maria and warning her not to pull on the handle or he would fire, she did the deed, resulting on Schmitz shooting her (In the English dub, Schmitz is not seen shooting her, though Maria's death is still heavily implied).[1]
Shadow Saga
Scarlet Garcia and Mr. Stewart visited a retirement center to interview Mr. Schmitz who is one of the few that witnessed the events of Space Colony ARK 50 years ago. At first, he refused to tell anything about the events of the ARK to Scarlet and Stewart, much to Scarlet's disgrace. Soon, Schmitz helped combat the black-suited agents that ambushed Stewart and Scarlet later on. He then finally told the story of his experience at the ARK 50 years ago as a G.U.N. agent. After telling his story, Schmitz became tearful and guilt-ridden over his killing of Maria.[1] He watched the battle in space with Super Sonic, Super Shadow and the Final Lizard.[2]
Personality
In his youth, Mr. Schmitz decided to join GUN because he believed that this way he would be able to serve his country by protecting people and world peace. After killing Maria, his dreams and idealism were shattered and the events that unfolded on the ARK haunted him for years, unable to forgive himself for shooting an innocent girl. He couldn't even reveal to the world what GUN had done on ARK. Helplessness and growing sadness make him a closed and suspicious man. However, when he was finally able to tell the truth, he regained hope for a better future.
Powers and skills
While working for GUN, Mr. Schmitz was trained in the use of weapons. He was using a gun. Even in retirement, he continued to play sports and was skilled in martial arts.

Trivia
- The character Commander Walters from Sonic the Hedgehog (film series) shares similar traits to him; Both work for G.U.N when they were younger, both were responsible for Maria Robotnik's death, they later felt guilt and remorse for her death in present day. However Schmitz got Maria killed due to following orders from G.U.N, where Walters got Maria accidentally killed when attempting to stop a solider from shooting her and ended up making the gun misfire to hit a container that ended exploding which got Maria killed.
