Kai

Kai was a mercenary pilot on Veldt when Kora started building a resistance group and needed his Tawau-class freighter to help find new allies across the stars. Kai was portrayed by Charlie Hunnam in A Child of Fire.

Kai was killed by Gunnar on the Gondivalian unregistered trade depot after Kai turned on the protagonists. Hunnam added a line that gave Kai a twin brother,[2] but this line never made it to the final movies.

Biography

Kai meets Kora

Born on the planet Saaldorun, Kai grew up on that world. It was later destroyed by an Imperium dreadnought, teaching Kai a life lesson that he would take to his grave: Don't join the wrong side of history. From then on, he lived for himself. Selfish and detached from those around him, he used others for his own gain. When a group of Hawkshaws were looking for information that they could provide to the representatives of the Motherworld in exchange for a few darams, Kai led them to a man with knowledge of the Bloodaxe insurgents for a cut of their profits. Another pair of travelers, Kora and Gunnar, also happened to be looking for that same man, seeking the same information he had, though, for another purpose. They wanted to find the insurgents to ask for their help. Seeing an opportunity in them, Kai saved Kora's life when Dash Thif came to take it from her and offered to take them where they wanted to go.

Gunnar v Kai

They were looking for the ex-general, Titus, who they heard was last seen on Pollux. Titus had an enormous bounty on his head, but Kai was also aware of a couple of other bounties with similar ideals; those of Tarak Decimus and Nemesis, both wanted by the Imperium. If Kai was able to support Kora's goals by finding these fugitives, Kora might be able to bring them aboard Kai's ship to become revolutionaries, and as a result, Kai might be able to turn them over to the Imperium, himself. He did just that, also teaming up with Darrian Bloodaxe along the way, but Kai also realized that Kora was known by another name. Kora was Arthelais, the most wanted fugitive in the universe. He called upon the services of Simeon's group of Hawkshaws to deliver this entire group to Admiral Atticus Noble for the score of a lifetime. He misjudged Gunnar's cowardice, however, allowing Gunnar the chance to save Kora from her shackles and take Kai's life, instead.[3]
