Quake II Manual

In Quake II, the Light Guards are one variety of the Stroggified humans who wear red and gray, light armor with orange shoulder plates. Light Guards are equipped with a Blaster attached to their right arm. A common enemy, they are also the weakest Strogg both in terms of health and their damage potential.

Behaviour and Attacks

The Light Guard is equipped with a Blaster similar to your own, but weaker - dealing 5 damage per shot. It's easily avoided by strafing, and its accuracy is not particularly good.

When fired upon, Light Guards sometimes duck and may return fire from their crouching position. Furthermore, when a Light Guard is killed but not gibbed, there is a chance it may perform a final attack - it falls onto its back, raises its weapon and fires two shots directly forward. This behaviour is common to all Guards.

If a Light Guard loses sight of the player, it may continue to fire in the general direction of where it last saw the player.

Strategies

  • Light Guards are easy to kill. A single decent hit from the Shotgun or a very brief burst from the Machine Gun (three bullets, to be precise) is enough to put one down. Even in groups, the Machine Gun can easily mow them down. You may encounter a few on the first level before you collect the Shotgun (depending on which route you go), in which case you'll need to use the Blaster against them, but it only takes two hits from the Blaster to kill one. As for the Light Guard doing damage to you in return - don't worry. Its blaster shot is easily dodged by strafing, and even if it hits it doesn't hurt much.
  • When encountered alongside other enemies, the Light Guard is a low priority target due to its feeble damage output and the ease with which its blaster can be dodged. Focus on the more dangerous enemies first.

Trivia

  • Light Guards are not the most common Strogg in the original game - that distinction goes to the Gunner. However, in the Call of the Machine expansion released as part of the 2023 remaster, Light Guards are by far the most common enemy, encountered over five hundred times.
