In Quake II, Combat Armor (also can be called the Combat Suit) is a type of armor that absorbs 60% of the damage from conventional means (weaponry, and most other forms of damage such as slime), and gives you 50 armor points, to a maximum of 100. It is less effective against energy weapons such as the BFG10k, Hyperblaster and Blaster, absorbing 30% of the damage in this case. The Combat Suit is Quake 2's version of the Yellow Armor.

To illustrate its effect, consider a player wearing Combat Armor is hit by a rocket launcher fired by an Iron Maiden or a railgun fired by a Gladiator, either of which deal 50 damage. If the player was not wearing armor at all, they would lose 50 health. While wearing Combat Armor, the armor absorbs 60% of that 50 damage, so the player would lose 30 armor and 20 health instead.

If you collect the weaker Jacket Armor while wearing Combat Armor, then you salvage Jacket Armor as a +12 increase to your overall armor points (to a maximum of 100) while still enjoying the benefits of wearing Combat Armor. By the same logic, the player can still collect Combat Armor once they have collected the superior Body Armor to increase their overall armor points by 37, to a maximum of 200.

Strategies

Single Player

In single player, Combat Armor is first found in a secret area in the Supply Station, and is uncommon until you get past the Factory hub, then becomes the most common after that. That's a very good thing, because a lot of hard-hitting enemies become common after the Factory hub, and you'll need all of the protection you can get. Against bosses however, it's not the best kind of protection.

Multiplayer

In multiplayer, Combat Armor is very useful, even though you only get 50 armor points when you pick one up. Those 50 points can allow you to survive and take out an enemy that shot you with a powerful weapon, such as a Railgun or Rocket Launcher. Whenever you get a chance, always try to find a Combat Armor or two. A player that has 100 armor points from Combat Suits can be pretty hard to kill.
