—The Quake II Manual |
In Quake II, the Enviro-Suit is a powerup that allows a player to move through Slime without being harmed. It also contains an oxygen supply (just like the Rebreather) allowing a player to stay underwater without drowning, for a time at least. Both of the aforementioned effects last for 30 seconds.
The Environment Suit gives partial but not complete protection against lava, a more dangerous fluid than Slime. While a player is wearing an Enviro-Suit, lava deals the same damage as slime normally would if the player was not wearing an Enviro-Suit.
Strategies
- There aren't many places in the game where you need to go into the Slime, strictly speaking. However, some areas of slime can lead to secret areas and hidden items, and there's usually an enviro-suit somewhere to be found which will allow you to make the journey more safely. The first example of this is in the Comm Center; the Toxic Waste Dump, Pumping Station 2, Upper Palace, Intelligence Center, Refinery and Maintenance Hangars also contain secrets that involve traversing slime.
- The level Heavy Water in Call of the Machine contains a button inside a large reservoir of Slime that must be pressed, and there's an enviro-suit nearby. Incidentally, the aforementioned Slime looks very much like water, not apparently any different to the non-toxic water the player swam through earlier in the level... so an unwary player might jump in without activating their enviro-suit first.

Trivia
- The Enviro-Suit follows on the tradition started by the Radiation Shielding Suit from Doom, and then the Biosuit from Quake. All three items are essentially the same thing; it protects the player from hazardous liquids and lasts a limited amount of time. However, the Quake II version can be stored in the player's inventory and saved for later, whereas the previous two versions were activated immediately upon being picked up.
