Water route

HGSS Route 12
Route 12, the first water route of the Kanto region

A water route is a type of route introduced in Generation I.

Description

A water route consists entirely or mostly of water and lines of rocks protruding from it. Water routes can only be traveled while surfing on a Pokémon. There is usually a lot less water routes than land routes, the latter sometimes consisting of a small body of water.

Water routes consist of Trainer classes who specialize in the Water type. From Generation I onward, there are Fishers and Swimmers (as well as female Swimmers since Generation II). Sailors can be encountered on certain water routes in Generations I through IV as well as Generation VI. The Hoenn water routes also have Sis & Bro, Triathletes, and Tubers, the latter also appearing in the Sinnoh games. In Alola, there are paired Swimmers, which are distinctively titled "Swimsuit Couple" in Japanese.

Hoenn has a lot more water routes than other regions. Besides this, there is darkened water in some of the water routes that the player can Dive into to go underwater.
