Bessie is a recurring static, non-sentient character in the Cars franchise. Making her debut in Cars, Bessie serves as the road paving machine in Radiator Springs, used for repairing roads. In Cars, Lightning McQueen and later the Delinquent Road Hazards are sentenced to tow it after being arrested by Sheriff for speeding.
She is a Basic Service Equipment road paving machine that is painted yellow, with some rust, two large metal tubs filled with boiling tar heated by a diesel fueled blast heater and has her name printed white on her gravel tumbler. She is fitted with 4 small flood lights that are used at night. Several pipes feed the tar into a hopper where its mixed with the gravel. Occasionally a pipe may form a tar bubble that might spray tar on the operator. She gets her name from the initials for Basic Service Equipment: BSE.
History
Cars
In Cars, Lightning, after inadvertently destroying the towns main road serves his sentence of community service by pulling Bessie to repave the main road. As Lightning partially paved the road, he asks Mater if he finishes the road he is free. Mater replies that its what Doc Hudson said. Lightning decides to rush the project, dragging and overworking the rig as asphalt pours out intensely. Mater tells Doc that Lightning has finished the road, Doc confused saying that only an hour has passed since he began. Bessie is seen worn out as if fatigued from Lightning's action. Doc angered by the horrendous condition of the pavement, demands Lightning scrape off the poorly laid asphalt and start over.
She is next seen again with Lightning at night, starting over with paving. Lightning throws a tantrum of having to pull the rig again. In response, Bessie throws a large blob of asphalt onto Lightning, making him rant in anger. In the morning, Sally finds Mater driving happily around the new pavement. Doc, after seeing the new road, finds the rig parked off the side of the road, with Lightning gone. Doc finds Sheriff near the dirt track asking if Lightning ran off. Sheriff, says he ran out of asphalt and asked Sheriff if he could use the dirt track again as he wanted to try again at the sharp turn on the track. She is finally used again, though off screen, by Lightning to finish the remainder of the road. At the end, the Delinquent Road Hazards are sentenced to the same punishment by Doc when they are arrested by Sheriff for troublemaking in Radiator Springs.
Cars: The Videogame
In Cars: The Videogame, she doesn't really appear in the video game, but there are 2 deleted scenes with her in it. She first appears in a deleted scene where Lightning sees Mater next to Bessie, and says hi. Then Mater asks Lightning to say hi to Bessie too, so Lightning said hello. Then Bessie let a blob of pavement out. Then Mater says that they should take her out for a drive, and that it's been a while, but Lightning says that he had a dream about Bessie last night. It was weird, considering the roads he was pulling her on. Then in another deleted scene, which follows the last deleted scene, Mater says that Lightning was right about the dream being weird, and said that he had a weird dream last night too. It wasn't about Bessie. Mater said that he was pulling big heavy stuff as a tugboat named Roy! He said the dream was horrible! It was funny too, because Mater can't even swim. He doesn't even go to a car wash.
Cars: Mater-National Championship
In Cars: Mater-National Championship, Bessie only appears as concept art that can be purchased for a certain amount of bonus points.
Kinect Rush: A Disney/Pixar Adventure
In Kinect Rush: A Disney/Pixar Adventure, Bessie makes a cameo next to the track near Radiator Springs in the first Cars level.
Cars: Fast as Lightning
In Cars: Fast as Lightning, Bessie makes a cameo when you touch the sign with an arrow pointing (left/right) and when is pouring tar on the road, but she moves automatically when you finish making the road by using gems.
