The Black Dog was a pirate ship that operated in the Caribbean during the early 1700s. Little is known of the ship's history, other than it eventually became a pirate ship under the command of Captain Edward Teague, a legendary pirate who became the Pirate Lord of Madagascar, Keeper of the Code, as well as the enigmatic father of Captain Jack Sparrow. The Black Dog was most notably used by Teague as one of a handful of pirate ships in a massive sea battle to defeat Armando Salazar, the most notorious pirate hunter of the Spanish Navy.[3] The ship's fate is unknown.
Behind the scenes
The Black Dog appeared in the 2017 film Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales.[3] Illustrator Jeremy Love was asked to do a number of detail colour illustrations for all of the ships in the film, with some being painted over preliminary pencil drawings by Simon Murton, who was at the earliest stages of design, under direction from production designer Nigel Phelps.[1] By the final version of the film, the Black Dog was a CGI addition, along with two other ships, the Red Dragon and the Ruddy Rose,[2] though featured in different scenes.[3] According to Love, the Black Dog was initially intended to be featured a little more prominently than it did in the film.[2]
While unconfirmed, it is possible that the Black Dog was named after Black Dog, a minor antagonist from Robert Louis Stevenson's classic novel Treasure Island.[4]

I think they are in the background in one of the scenes from memory, but I'm not certain. I think initially Teague's ship was to feature a little more prominently than it did."
