Olivia

Olivia Massell (11 April[1]) is a teenager who lives in Camena Coast and is part of a cult named "Parentage." She and her two friends, Charlie and Violet, communicate with the Sunken and Alex.

Biography

"One imagined Olivia backstory was that she attended a private school which led to an exploration in school uniforms. In the end, we thought she'd be a teen that'd express her angst/edge through her clothing and arrived at the grungy version of Olivia we have in-game."[2]

Olivia is the daughter of Marigold and Cyan Massell. When Marigold found out she was pregnant, she had no intention of being a mother; however, Parentage, the cult they were a part of, helped her and her husband accept the birth of Olivia.[3] Therefore, Olivia was raised by Parentage's teachings and beliefs, which include not harming animals, as seen in Riley's vision.[4]

Unfortunately, her parents died in a plane crash four years before the events of Oxenfree II: Lost Signals. Since their passing, Olivia has lived with her aunt and uncle, who are also a part of Parentage.[5] Olivia's backstory is the talk of the town.[6]

Before hanging out with Olivia, Charlie and Violet were friends with Maria, the host of Camena High School Radio Station.[7] Now, they barely see each other, which is why Maria is mad at Olivia. According to Maria, Violet does whatever Olivia says, and Charlie has a crush on her, which makes Maria jealous.[8]

Olivia and her friends met Jacob on an Internet forum without knowing each other's real identities. Due to the knowledge that Maggie Adler taught him, he learned how to tune the radio to talk to dead people. He told Olivia, Charlie, and Violet how.[9] In the events of the game, Olivia wants to use this information to communicate with her parents, thanks to the Blue Moon.[10]

Olivia has shoulder-length blonde hair with bangs and green-grey eyes. Her eyebrows are light brown, meaning she has likely dyed her hair. Olivia wears a black turtleneck sweater under a green hoodie, camouflage pants, and red sneakers. She also has a lip piercing.

  3. "I’ve never been nor will I ever be pregnant, so I can’t say I understand Marigold’s struggle. But I do sympathize. We plan our lives… and then things happen. You say Parentage helped her and her husband accept the birth of Olivia, that they provided a structure for the chaos of early parenthood. But Olivia is a person, not a problem to be solved. How will this structure affect her own life?" –Adler Letter #6.
  4. Cyan: The worst thing you can do to someone is waste their time. And killing someone’s basically wasting all their time at once.
Olivia: It was a spider! I didn’t know it was in the drain!
  5. Maria: Her mom and dad actually died in a prop plane crash almost four years ago, but she lives with her Aunt and Uncle, now.
  6. Olivia: You’ve been here—what? An hour? I’m sure you’ve heard the story by now—it’s everyone’s favorite to tell. “The crazy lunatics who joined a cult and died, leaving their daughter to her Aunt and Uncle.”
  7. Maria: Okay—so that’s—that’s Charlie and Violet. They’re my friends. And Olivia, but… forget her. Only one of them is a freak—that’s Olivia. [...] Look—I used to be really good friends with Violet—and Charlie used to do the radio station thing— But ever since Olivia started hanging out with them, it’s like everything—
  8. Maria: Olivia sucks. Charlie has a thing for her—God knows why—and Violet will do anything she says.
  9. Charlie: There’s an internet forum we’re all on. Camena Crypts, Creeps and Clues? And some guy — or who knows if it’s a guy — but they posted all this stuff about Edwards Island.
Violet: Yeah, and Fort Milner — something about a submarine disaster.
Olivia: They said you could tune a radio and hear dead people. Explained how to do it. Nobody seemed to believe him… but we did.
Jacob: Uh… okay? This is — uh, was his name… WolfmansGotNards? [...]
    Charlie: You!
  10. Olivia: Tonight’s the Blue Moon. And if you give me back my radio I’ll… be able to bring them back.
