ECV-197-1, also referred to as Shuttle 1,[2] is one of at least four shuttlecraft held in the Shuttle Bay of the USS Orville and the most frequently used shuttle on the ship. Its most prolific pilot is Helmsman Gordon Malloy.
The designation "ECV-197-1," or any other shuttle designation for that matter, is not fixed to a particular craft. For example, when an original Shuttle 1 is destroyed by early 2421, a new craft with the same designation replaced it.
ECV-197-1 has been replaced at least once, as the original craft was destroyed by Orrin Channing in early April 2421.[2]
History
Between 2419 and 2421, Shuttle 1 flies to and from the Epsilon Science Station,[3] the USS Blériot,[4] Moclus,[5] the Bio-ship,[6] Sargus 4,[7] the surface of Kandar 1,[8] Xelaya,[9] an unnamed habitable planetto rescue Captain Ed Mercer and Teleya,[10] Regor 2,[11] the shuttle bay of Outpost 58,[12] and a Moclan sanctuary for females.[13]
In late 2420, the shuttle was used to deploy a solar sail near Regor 2 to create a fake star in the Giliac constellation.[11]
When the Kaylon take over the Orville in February 2421, First Officer Kelly Grayson and Helmsman Gordon Malloy take the shuttle into Krill Space to persuade the Krill to participate in the Battle of Earth.[14]
The ECV-197-1 is destroyed in the spring of 2421 when rogue terrorist Orrin Channing and Gordon hijack the shuttle to blow up the Davoro'kos. Gordon turns on Orrin and the shuttle is destroyed when explosive containers of Envall blood are activated.[2]
Additional uses include:
- Ed spying on First Officer Kelly Grayson and Cassius from outside the window of her Quarters.[12]
- Locar hiding in the shuttle by narrowing the shuttle's cloaking device like a lens.[15]

- Chief of Security Alara Kitan operates a simulated version of ECV-197-1 in Firestorm.
Mistakes
- In Into the Fold, the shuttle ECV-197-2 leaves the Shuttle Bay of the USS Orville. When that shuttle crashes on a distant habitable moon, its designation is ECV-197-1.[16]
