Quarters

Quarters were living accommodations on space-faring vessels. Quarters were the most common living arrangement in spacecraft, found in civilizations such as the Planetary Union, the Krill, and the Nazh. An alternative to quarters was a habitable ecosystem ship, such as a bio-ship.

An individual room was called a unit. On Union vessels such as the USS Orville, most quarters were categorized by different classes, which reflected a unit's design, accommodations, and location on the ship.

Planetary Union

Enlisted crew and officers enjoyed dedicated units comprising of a living room, a bedroom, and a bathroom. Interior design was similar across quarters. All living rooms in the Orville hosted a Food Synthesizer.[1]

The Union allowed officers to select furniture to be added to their quarters.[n 1] They were usually decorated with a couch and coffee table, pictures hanging on the wall, a dining table with chairs, and cabinetry with a dining set. Bedrooms contained a bed, pictures, and nightstand.

Each unit had a doorbell, a light pulsing sound. It was considered very rude to enter a room without ringing the bell first.[n 2]

Rooms were assigned by the ship's Chief of Security. Guests of the ship were given temporary quarters, also called guest quarters.[2]

In the Union, all quarters received a level of legal protection from reasonless searches by officers of a ship. For example, when Chief Security Officer Alara Kitan and First Officer Kelly Grayson searched Pria Lavesque's temporary quarters without a narrowly articulated suspicion of wrongdoing, Ed filed a formal reprimand against Alara.[2]

Confinement to quarters was a form of detention alternative to arrest where the detainee was quarantined inside their unit.[1] Confinement was preferable when an arrest was unwarranted but the commanding officers had to limit someone's contact with others.

USS Orville

Generally, crew quarters were found on Decks C and G. A notable exception is Captain Ed Mercer's unit, which was a two-floor arrangement on Decks A and B.

  • Decks A and B
    • An unnumbered, two-story living unit belonging to the captain of the ship near the Bridge and the Captain's Office above and the Mess Hall below. The lower floor of Ed's room was a large living room, which even included a baby grand piano. The loft was a typical bedroom arrangement.
    • Doctor Claire Finn's family probably had their quarters on Deck B.[n 3]
  • Deck C
    • Unit 3 - Personal quarters of Lieutenant Phillips prior to November 2419 and empty after. Phillips was known to keep a hamster in the unit. When Alara nearly assigned the unit to Pria Lavesque, Ed and Alara realized the room still smelled of his pet.[2]
    • Unit 6 - Guest quarters assigned to Pria during her stay with the Orville.[2]
    • Guest quarters on this floor were given to an ambassador from either the Navarians or Bruidians.[1]
    • Chief of Security Alara Kitan probably had her quarters in Section 4.[n 4] Evidently, these quarters were inherited by her replacement, Talla Keyali.[3]
    • According to a deck map, quarters on this floor were given to Toren, an engineer of the Moclan Science Division, and his mate Korick in Section 2099. However, the identifier has also been interpreted as Section 2, Unit 099.[4]

  • Deck G
    • Guest quarters on this floor were given to an ambassador from either the Navarians or Bruidians.[1]
    • Alara mentioned that the quarters on Deck G were on the opposite end of the ship from quarters on Deck C.[1]
  • Unknown
    • Darulio was assigned quarters beside the Science Lab. While the precise location of the lab is unknown, it seems to have been on a unique deck.[1]
Classes

All quarters were built and categorized by classes with the exception of VIP quarters.

  • Class A - Captain's quarters; first officer's quarters. Class A quarters were the most desirable and comfortable accommodations. These two-story units were placed a short distance from the bridge. The top level consisted of a bedroom, bathroom, and storage area, and had access to Deck A. The lower level was a spacious living room. 90 square meters.[5]
  • Classes B & C - Senior level officer's quarters.
    • Class B was designed for individual senior officers without families. They had a living room (with a workspace), bedroom and personal storage unit, and a private bathroom. 48 square meters.[6]
    • Class C was designed for senior officers with families. They had a variable number of rooms, depending on the size of the family.[7]
  • Class D - Junior level officer's quarters. Junior-level officers were assigned a Class D unit as close to their assigned station as possible. They had had a living and dining area, a bedroom with a foldaway bed that converted to a workstation, Food Synthesizer, closet, and bathroom.[7]
  • Class E - Other personnel quarters. They consisted of dormitory-style units with four bunkrooms with two beds each and separate bathrooms.[8]
VIP Quarters

Four units aboard the Orville were designated as VIP quarters and reserved for "visiting flag officers, dignitaries, and special guests." These rooms were built not only for comfort, but also to be easily modified by the crew to accommodate any special needs of other life forms.[8]

Krill

Quarters were remarkably spartan on Krill ships such as the Yakar. A unit consisted of a bare room with a large view screen and a bedroom. So oppressive were Krill rooms by Union standards that Ed told Gordon Malloy that quarters on the ship "are like a dungeon."[9]

Nazh

The quarters of a mining foreman named Ilis were sparse with gray metal walls, floors, and ceiling, and a large desk and chair.[10]

Trivia

  • The gelatinous officer Lieutenant Yaphit told Doctor Claire Finn that he was not retaining fluid like he normally does, and now his quarters "look like a swamp."[11]

Notes

  1. Kelly to Ed: "Did you pick out the furniture?" Ed: "You know, I didn't, but if you're really interested in the furniture, I'd be happy to get all the information I can about it. I could have somebody compile a full report and have it sent to your quarters this afternoon. Maybe you'd find something nice for your new apartment." Episode 1x01: Old Wounds
  2. When Alara bursts into Bortus's room as he broods his egg, he is incensed: "Is it not customary to request permission before entering someone else's quarters?" Episode 1x02: Command Performance
  3. In a dream of Marcus Finn, he accesses his quarters on the same floor as the Mess Hall. Episode 3x01: Electric Sheep
  4. After Alara concludes her conversation with her parents in her quarters, she sees a clown. The incident was confirmed by scanners to have taken place on Deck C in Section 4. Episode 1x10: Firestorm
