God

Overview
I will grant you power. What to do with this power, you should know.
— God to Homeless Emperor[1]

An enigmatic entity referred to as God (カミ, Kami) by several individuals such as Homeless Emperor,[2] Psykos,[3] and Blast.[4] It serves as overarching antagonist of the Monster Association Arc, controlling and empowering several major villains.

Appearance

In its first appearance, "God" resembles a swirling gust of wind, with scribbles that outline a human figure.[2] "God" is described by Psykos as reminiscent of Jupiter's surface with countless spiraling spots overlapping over one another.[5]

When Saitama, Flashy Flash, and Manako peer through a hole while underground, an entity presumed to be "God", appears to be in a different dimension, looking like an enormous humanoid that completely dwarfs the hole they are peering into.[6] However, none of the three could see it.[7]

In its second appearance during Homeless Emperor's vision, it takes the form of a colossal humanoid figure composed entirely of flesh and bones with no face. It remains unknown whether this physical form is real, if it possesses one at all, or if these are merely imaginary projections within the Homeless Emperor's mind.

When making an appearance in a vision to Tatsumaki and Garou, "God" impersonates Blast's appearance as he was when Blast first met Tatsumaki and Bang for Garou. The facade quickly fades to display its true faceless appearance once the trick fails to work for either of them.

Personality

"God" gave Homeless Emperor its powers[2] and enhanced the abilities of Orochi and Psykos,[8] although its motives remain unknown. "God" appears to agree with Homeless Emperor's belief that humanity is a worthless plague on an otherwise grand and beautiful planet.[2]

It also has a tendency to test whether people are worthy of receiving its power through a mysterious cube. Those deemed unworthy face "forfeiture," likely leading to their demise.[9] "God" seems intent on keeping its existence hidden from most people if possible. This is demonstrated when it mercilessly takes back the powers it had granted to Homeless Emperor before the latter could answer any questions from Zombieman.[10]

Furthermore, "God" appears to be opportunistic, often manifesting before individuals in deep despair, disguising itself as someone they might trust in order to offer them power. After Garou's defeat by Saitama in the Ominous Future, "God" killed Garou and reclaimed the powers it had given him in an attempt to prevent the Hero Hunter from passing onto Saitama a time travel technique that could reverse Garou's negative actions. This suggests that this entity eliminates its minions whose actions oppose its desires.

While "God" seems to hate humans, it does not appear to value life on Earth in general. It was unconcerned when Garou, in his Cosmic Fear Mode, emitted deadly radiation that threatened all living beings on the planet.

History

Over the past twenty years, Blast and several collaborators have been fighting "God" by searching for and analyzing mysterious cubes that facilitate communication with this entity and can transform humans into Mysterious Beings.

At least fifteen but no more than twenty years ago, "God" transformed Void into a Mysterious Being, making him its pawn while Void and Blast were working together to find the cubes. This led Blast to confront and defeat Void, who was his partner. It was fifteen years ago that Blast emerged victorious, leaving Void with serious injuries that took fifteen years to heal.

Two years ago, during Blast's battle with Elder Centipede, "God" intervened, offering divine powers to the S-Class hero. After rejecting the offer, Blast managed to survive a fight with the entity. The sudden appearance of "God" may have allowed Elder Centipede to escape from Blast. Since that time, Blast decided to keep the existence of "God" from others in the Hero Association, with Sitch being an exception.

Approximately a month before the encounter between Homeless Emperor and Zombieman, "God" granted the former the ability to project destructive energy spheres.[11]

Plot

Human Monster Saga

Monster Association Arc

Homeless Emperor meets God

"God" is first seen in a flashback as Homeless Emperor recounts his backstory to Zombieman. He describes how he stumbled upon "God" in a park one day. "God" compliments Homeless Emperor for his "correct" ideology but states that the human has no reason to die. Instead, it granted him the ability to summon and control energy spheres at will, telling the newly-empowered human he should know what to do with this power before leaving.

God Mural

During the fight between Orochi and Saitama deep underground, Orochi reveals a tablet he discovered in an ancient shrine, which depicted him and stated that a worthy sacrifice was needed to resurrect "God". This leads Orochi to believe he is the god being referred to. Shortly after, Saitama defeats Orochi with a single punch. As the ancient cave collapses, Orochi's remnants crawl toward the shrine in a desperate attempt to protect it. Just as he reaches the ancient tablet, an image of "God" appears on the wall, unnoticed by Orochi.

"God" later appears in another flashback as Psykos recounts how she obtained the source of her enhanced power, describing it as a massive mass of brain cells resembling Jupiter's surface.

Later, "God" communicates with Saitama, Flashy Flash, and Manako after they touch a cube. The mysterious figure expresses surprise at their presence, telling them to place their hands on the cube to either gain powers if deemed worthy or face "forfeiture" if not. The trio makes no decision, as Blast suddenly appears and confiscates the cube. Just before the hero teleports it to an unknown location, "God" expresses surprise at Blast's presence.

God looking at Homeless Emperor from the moon

After Homeless Emperor's defeat, when Zombieman begins to inquire further about the entity Homeless Emperor mentioned, he suddenly sees a colossal figure appear atop the Moon. The entity manifests in his mind, transforming into a giant of flesh and fractured bones. It then mercilessly strips Homeless Emperor of his light powers and his life, causing his body to disintegrate in the process.[10]

Later, when Tatsumaki is down and near unconsciousness, "God" attempts to lure her into taking its powers by posing as Blast. However, she realizes it is not the real Blast and asks "God" about its true identity, prompting it to leave in irritation.

God tells Garou that he will be his avatar

During the fight between Saitama and Garou, the latter's attack weakens the dimensional seal keeping "God" at bay. In the sky, large clouds form, and "God's" feet appear, beginning to walk. As Garou is defeated by Saitama, "God" communicates with him telepathically, offering him power to defeat the Caped Baldy. While impersonating Bang's appearance, "God" extends its hand to Garou, who realizes someone is impersonating his former master and slaps the hand away. Despite this, merely touching "God's" hand influences him, causing the Hero Hunter to accidentally receive "God's" powers. Before vanishing from Garou's sight, "God" declares it will make him its "avatar," leaving Garou nearly unconscious from the overwhelming flow of power.

Despite being empowered by "God", Garou is still unable to defeat Saitama. Upon discovering Tareo's death, Garou repents and asks Saitama to replicate his time travel technique to change the Ominous Future. As Garou begins using his technique in front of Saitama, "God" kills him by turning him into a statue of salt, reclaiming his powers in the process. However, Saitama manages to master Garou's technique in time and uses it to travel through time.

Saitama returns to the past, arriving at the moment when Garou, shortly after unleashing his Gamma Ray Burst attack, confronts many heroes on the surface. Saitama delivers a powerful punch to Garou's face, defeating him and preventing the Ominous Future from occuring again. Soon after, Saitama is forcibly merged with the current timeline version of himself, losing the memory of the events in the Ominous Future. Confused and suffering from a mysterious knockout punch, Garou screams in pain as "God's" powers begin to leave his body, freeing him from the entity's influence.

Neo Heroes Saga

Psychic Sisters Arc

God mentioned in an emergency meeting held by Sitch

Following the Monster Association's downfall, an emergency meeting is convened by Sitch, attended by Sekingar, Sweet Mask, and only a few S-Class heroes. The main topic is "God", who possesses the ability to telepathically communicate with and transform humans into Mysterious Beings. The heroes are instructed to keep this threat secret until effective countermeasures can be developed. Sitch reveals a message from Blast indicating that "God" has been intervening more frequently in the three-dimensional space where Earth resides because something in this dimension has caught its attention.

Fubuki sensing God's presence

Later, as Fubuki heads to meet Psykos at the Hero Association Headquarters, she recalls her encounter with Psykos during the Monster Association raid. After defeating Psykos, Fubuki briefly sensed "God's" presence while trying to figure out the source of Psykos' madness.

Abilities and Powers

It resembled brain cells... visualizations of outer space... and the surface of Jupiter. It was something like God... And as time stopped, its gaze fell on me. I was afraid... even as a mysterious power filled me. In that moment, I awakened to my destiny.
— Psykos describing her encounter with "God".

"God" possesses a vast array of supernatural powers and abilities, although the full extent of its powers remains largely unknown. The top-ranking S-Class hero, Blast, has been actively searching for cube-shaped objects associated with "God" in an attempt to prevent this enigmatic figure from empowering individuals who could become its minions.[12] Considering that Blast only takes action when humanity faces a true crisis,[13] it can be inferred that "God" poses an exceedingly dangerous threat.

After receiving power from "God", Garou underwent a transformative mutation and gained formidable abilities. He became capable enough to fight against and even force Saitama to get serious before ultimately being defeated. This incident strongly suggests that "God" wields immense power, as it is the source of Garou's newfound abilities. Additionally, Sitch mentions that opposing "God" requires the ability to manipulate space-time, which speaks volumes about the terrifying power of this mysterious entity.[14]

Supernatural Abilities

Power Bestowal: "God" can turn humans into Mysterious Beings, granting them supernatural powers. Those granted powers exhibit varying levels of proficiency and effectiveness in wielding them. For instance, it bestowed upon Homeless Emperor the incredible ability to summon energy spheres resembling mini suns that explode upon contact, creating massive bursts of flames.[2] Psykos and Orochi also received a massive power boost during their fusion, allowing them to slice through the Earth's surface with a single attack.[15] Moreover, "God" can grant powers to individuals who place their hands on one of the mysterious cubes. However, those deemed unworthy face "forfeiture" and presumably death.[16] It can also reclaim the granted powers along with the lives of the recipients.[10]

Thanks to the powers received from "God", Garou gained awareness of the flow of all energy and the behaviour of all forces in the cosmos;[17] the Hero Hunter also becoming capable of fighting against even a serious Saitama, though he lost.[18][19]

Telepathy: "God" has the ability to mentally communicate with humans on Earth. It once used telepathy to communicate with Flash, Saitama, and Manako after they touched a mysterious cube, which enables contact with it.[20] However, it is also capable of initiating communication without physical contact, as seen when it appeared to Psykos and Orochi during their merging and later spoke to Garou after his defeat by Saitama.[21] Additionally, following the Monster Association incident, Sitch held an emergency meeting with Sekingar and several S-Class heroes to discuss the potential danger of anyone becoming a monster through telepathic interaction with "God".[22]

God impersonating Bang and reaching out its hand to Garou
  • Mind Incursion: "God" has demonstrated the ability to infiltrate the minds of its targets, such as Homeless Emperor, freely altering the appearance of its projection within their consciousness.[10] This ability also allows it to identify and disguise itself as someone its targets hold dear or are likely to trust. It attempted this with Tatsumaki, assuming the form of Blast in an effort to lure her into accepting its power, but it failed.[23] In contrast, its impersonation of Bang with Garou was successful, although the Hero Hunter accidentally received its power by slapping its hand away. Despite retaining part of his personality after being transformed by "God", Garou remained susceptible to its mental influence, which made him much more cruel than before.

Supernatural Awareness: "God" possesses heightened awareness across dimensions. The Moon appears to have a significant connection to this being.[24] The Moon is repeatedly shown during key battles between the Hero Association and the Monster Association,[25][26] almost as if observing the events below.[27] Additionally, "God" is able to sense and appear before individuals experiencing deep despair, tempting them with offers of power, as seen with Homeless Emperor. Blast has also stated that this entity intervenes more frequently in the three-dimensional space where Earth resides because something (Saitama) has caught its attention.[28]

God's feet coming out of portals

Spatial Manipulation: "God" has the ability to manipulate space, enabling it to create portals or dimensional rifts from which its feet can emerge. The mysterious cubes, presumed to be created by "God" and manifestations of its power, also induce spatial distortion in their vicinity, as noted by Blast.

  • Dimensional Travel: "God" is able to traverse between dimensions. According to Blast, "God" was on the verge of breaking through a dimensional barrier. Its feet emerged from mysterious thunderclouds, which appeared to be dimensional rifts.[29] Blast also stated that "God" intervenes more frequently in the three-dimensional space where Earth resides due to something (Saitama) in this dimension attracting its attention.

Time Manipulation: When Saitama, Flash, and Manako were underground in Z-City near a mysterious cube, Blast noted that their surroundings experienced slower time flow compared to other locations and advised them to leave quickly. The cube, presumably created by "God", caused this time dilation. This artifact also created a temporal cleft that affected Blast, allowing "God" to approach Tatsumaki, who ultimately rejected its offer of power. Given that the cube appears to be a manifestation of "God's" power, it suggests that this entity can manipulate time. Another piece of evidence is Garou's time travel technique, which he passed onto Saitama and acknowledged as a power originating from "God".

Invisibility: "God" can project images of itself and conceal its presence from those it wishes to remain unseen by. Many heroes, including Saitama, were unable to see its feet emerging from dimensional rifts.[30]

Miscellaneous Abilities

Cosmic Knowledge: Due to having imparted Garou the immense knowledge of the universe, it can be presumed that "God" is also extremely knowledgeable about the cosmos.

  • (To Saitama, Flashy Flash and Manako) "Three visitors at the same time? How unusual. Let me see if you are worthy vessels to bestow my power upon."[31]
    • "Place your hand on that box and make a fervent wish. If you are worthy, you shall gain power from it. But if not, you will face forfeiture."[32]
  • (To Homeless Emperor) "Silence. I am taking them back. Your power, your life, they are both forfeit."[33]
  • (To Tatsumaki) "Come. Take my power, and we can strike down your enemies together."[34]

Trivia

  • Murata stated that Homeless Emperor's energy-based powers are the same as Choze and Vaccine Man's.[35]
    • Like Homeless Emperor, Vaccine Man also claimed to be on a sacred mission to destroy humanity, but stated that it was "Mother Nature" he served, rather than "God".
  • Murata has posted a tweet portraying the descent of "God", which destroys something that resembles the Hero Association Headquarters.[36]
