— KITE KID |
KITE KID is a character and optional boss in OMORI. He is a young boy who enjoys flying his beloved kite in the breezy winds of PINWHEEL FOREST, a floating forest located above the eastern areas of VAST FOREST.
PROFILE
APPEARANCE
KITE KID appears to be a young boy wearing a navy blue hat, goggles, jacket, and a yellow scarf. He is always seen with his kite and has a neutral expression on his face.
PERSONALITY
While not much is shown about him, KITE KID enjoys flying his kite and believes that his bond with it is what makes him unbeatable in battle. Even if he gets defeated, KITE KID will only believe that the weather is why he and his kite can't defeat the party.
STORY
KITE KID can be found standing at the edge of PINWHEEL FOREST amongst various pinwheels flying his kite. He relies heavily on the wind to perform at his full potential. Interacting with him will initiate an optional boss fight. If the player hasn't fought KITE KID and his kite before ONE DAY LEFT, then a stronger version of their regular boss battle can be fought when returning to HEADSPACE on the OMORI ROUTE.
When you battle with him, you fight both KITE KID and KID'S KITE together. After defeating him, he admits that he and his kite weren't strong enough against the party and this unlocks the ability to fly kites with your party members. His defeat also yields the Perfect Weather Conditions achievement. If the player chooses to interact with him once again, KITE KID will mention that he spotted a dark void in the sky more frequently in the past few days.
Defeating KITE KID will also initiate a minor sidequest titled WEAK WIND, where the player would need to investigate one of the broken pinwheels. Though not mentioned in-game at all, this objective can be completed regardess by using KEL's tag ability to throw a projectile at the broken pinwheel. Completion of the quest rewards the group with a watermelon containing SPAGHETTI. It is also noteworthy that KITE KID's defeat dialogue changes depending on if the pinwheel was fixed or not.

All skills, unless stated otherwise, have a 20% variance rate. This means they will do between 80% and 120% of their regular damage.
For the variant that appears in ONE DAY LEFT (if he hasn't been fought before), there is a new mechanic that involves the wind changing its current at every turn. If a new wind state is added, then it will retrieve the previous buffs and SPEED debuffs from the enemy. There are three versions that'll affect all enemies in-battle:
- If the wind is weak, then it will remove all previous buffs and SPEED debuffs from the target.
- If the wind is steady, then it will increase ATTACK and DEFENSE (Both two tiers), while debuffing SPEED by two tiers.
- If the wind is raging, then it will increase ATTACK, DEFENSE, and SPEED by three tiers.
*Only this skill will be used when being OBSERVED .
**This skill is automatically activated at the end of the turn if KID'S KITE has been defeated. It does not consume KITE KID's turn. Only used for KITE KID's fight before ONE DAY LEFT of the OMORI ROUTE.
AI
SKILL | NOTES | EMOTION | |||
---|---|---|---|---|---|
NEUTRAL | HAPPY | SAD | ANGRY | ||
ATTACK | KITE KID throws JACKS at _____! | 75% | 100% | 75% | 75% |
BRAG | KITE KID brags about KID'S KITE! | 100% | 0% | 100% | 100% |
Every turn, each enemy will start by trying to use the skill listed at the top. If the calculation fails, they move on to the second skill and so on, until reaching the final skill which is guaranteed to activate. Each calculation is done independently from the previous ones, so the added percentage is not 100%.
STRATEGY
While first instinct is to destroy the KID's KITE, it will revive so long as the KITE KID is still standing. Defeating KITE KID also means defeating KID's KITE, so make haste to defeat him first!

TRIVIA
- The only time KITE KID can be seen facing forward is through his battle sprites. His overworld sprites, however, only have him facing upwards and sideways whenever the party interacts with him. This could be due to him being focused on flying his kite, not wanting to be disturbed.
- The effect of EMOTIONS on the EXP and CLAMS earned from KITE KID on ONE DAY LEFT is different from other enemies.
- KITE KID, PLUTO (EXPANDED), UNBREAD TWINS, and the DINO'S DIG enemies are the only enemies that have an increase in EXP when encountering them on ONE DAY LEFT of the OMORI ROUTE.
- KITE KID's battle theme was originally used as VAST FOREST's battle theme in the demo.
- KITE KID and his kite are based off of characters from a picture book titled "A Kid and His Kite", as shown in the SORTING chore in the OMORI ROUTE.
- In the 2018 Kickstarter demo, KITE KID's sidequest was originally named WEAK WINDS, in which the former would ask the player to investigate one of the pinwheels as he feels something is wrong with them. MARI would also have commentary on the sidequest as well. In the final game, there are mentions of this quest in-game, though MARI's commentary on it exists in the game's language files.
- Incomplete: "KITE KID thinks one of the pinwheels in the FLOATING FOREST is broken. I wonder if there's any way to fix it."
- Complete: "The pinwheels seem to all be spinning now. You know what KEL always says. If it doesn't work... throw something at it!"
