Personality
Perhaps because of his mother's influence, Rutart has displayed a pompous, entitled attitude ever since he was a child. As he grows up, Rutart becomes a snobbish slacker who dislikes doing hard work or having real responsibility. He does not perform any duty that people may expect from the eldest son and lazes around in the capital instead. Despite his slothfulness, Rutart feels that his noble status and privileges are well-deserved.
Like his mother, Rutart looks down on his half-siblings. In his view, they are not the real nobles and should obediently serve him. On the other hand, he prefers to mix in with rich, high-status people despite being a mere son of a baron. According to senior students in the academy, Rutart visibly aimed to elevate his status via social connections.
Deep down, Rutart has an issue with the inferiority complex. He lacks the talent to succeed on his own. Moreover, his blood family is downright dysfunctional. Neither his mother nor sister loves him despite his constant attempt to gain their acknowledgment and affection. Over time, Rutart has developed jealousy toward Leon, who appears to have everything Rutart desires: a warm family, wealth, fame, and beautiful fiancées.
Story Overview
Volume 1
Rutart appears with Zola and Merce on the day Leon regains his memory.
Rutart returns with Zola and Merce exactly the same day when Leon was returning home with Angelica and Olivia with him. But they returned to the Royal Capital the very next day.
Volume 3
Before Leon is arrested due to falsified evidence, he meets up with Rutart and his sister in the kingdom's capital city. Rutart accuses Leon of being selfish and not giving more of his wealth to Zola's side of the family, including Rutart himself. Leon retorts by stating that he's under no obligation to do so, and that Rutart, being the first-born, should be the one to provide income for his family. This causes Rutart to become angry and swear that Leon would pay for his insolence.
Balcus tries to recruit Rutart for the war between the kingdom and the principality. He hides behind Zola hearing this and she refuses to allow him to participate, but when Balcus pushes her, Zola snaps, telling Balcus he has no control over Rutart as Balcus isn't his real father, accidentally revealing the boy's true parentage. After hearing this Balcus leaves.
After the war, he had his knight title stripped due to desertion during war and becomes a commoner.
Volume 9
Rutart lives alongside Zola and Merce in the Forest of Ladies and had been ordered to take any young lady to become a member of Zola's new organization, but he keeps to failing at his task. During the war between Gabino and Forest of Ladies, towards the Holfort Kingdom, Rutart is tasked to kidnap one of Leon's fiancés to become a hostage in order to threaten Leon. He fails to do so as none of Leon's fiancés are weak enough to be taken by him and he kidnaps Jenna and Finley as a desperate measure instead.
While being called a failure on his task as Zola and Merce can't believe for Leon to rescue his sisters, Rutart's desperate attempt prove his worth to them. However, Zola, Merce, and Rutart can't outdo Leon and Rutart is beaten by Leon. For their escape attempt, Rutart is turned into a monster by his own mother Zola in order for him to go on rampage and distract Leon and Oscar, but Rutart eats both Zola and Merce during his loss of awareness instead. Leon ends Rutart's fate afterward with his shotgun.
Relationships
- Zola (Mother)
Zola regarded Rutart as nothing more than an instrument to subdue Balcus and inherit the territory. Unlike his half-siblings, who were affectionately attached to their mother Luce, Balcus's lover, Rutart lacked that familial warmth, which made him deeply envious.
When Balcus discovered Rutart's true origins, he decided to abandon Zola. Months later, Zola saw Rutart as a mere obstacle, though she still kept him in her mind as a useful tool.
Rutart, in his quest for maternal approval, accepted a position at the Academy to watch over Leon's fiancées. However, when he failed to capture the fiancées and only managed to kidnap the sisters, he felt Zola's disappointment. After being beaten by Leon, a wounded Rutart sought his mother's help, but Zola betrayed him by burying a fragment of magical armor in him. In a state of madness, Rutart, transforming into a creature, ended the lives of his mother and sister.
- Merce (Older Sister)
Mercer had no affection for her brother, whom she regarded as merely an instrument of her mother's attempt to gain dominance over Bartfort. However, she was aware of Rutart's weaknesses and took pleasure in reminding him of them. She showed not the slightest hint of compassion when her mother implanted him with the fragment of the magical armor. In his desperation, before transforming into a creature, Rutart sought the help of his sister, but was cruelly rejected. Consumed by grief, he completed his metamorphosis and, in an act of violence, attacked and killed his sister.
From the beginning, Rutart does not experience any kind of affection towards the man he thought was his father, as well as towards his half-siblings. During his childhood, Rutart seems to have had certain conflicts with Nicks, Balcus' second son. He enjoyed humiliating and boasting about his luxuries in front of Jenna and Finley, such as, for example, eating certain sweets in front of Finley and making fun of their way of dressing, among other things. Rutart felt envy and jealousy towards Leon's achievements, showing his discontent whenever his name was mentioned and feeling indignant that Leon did not share his income with Zola, Rutart's mother. He was not affected by discovering that Balcus was not his father. Filled with resentment towards the Bartfort family, Rutart kidnapped Jenna and Finley with the intention of having Leon come to rescue them, blinded by his jealousy and wishing to force Leon to give him everything he considers to belong to him.
