Turn18

The Devil of Ashinoko Skyline (芦ノ湖スカイラインの悪麿 Ashinoko sukairain no waru maro) is the eighteenth episode of the MF Ghost anime adaptation, alongside it being the 6th episode of the anime's Second Season.

Synopsis

The race reaches its climax as it enters the final lap. When Kanata suddenly noticed, the rain had stopped falling on Lake Ashi. Due to changes in the weather, a dense fog known as the Devil of Lake Ashi occurs, blocking visibility of the course. However, under the circumstances, the decision made by MFG management was to continue the race. When Kanata learns of this, he tells Ogata that this is a chance given to him by God. The miraculous countdown that was shown in foggy Hakone is now about to be carved out again in foggy Lake Ashi.

Plot

As the leaders of the race pass the Relay straight for the second time, Michael is teasing Sawatari by making it seem like he is planning an overtake, but not finishing the pass. Other cars make it to the straight, including Maezono and Katagiri battling for 4th place, Sakamoto alone in the 6th and Taylor and Aiba battling for 7th. Aiba makes a successful pass on Taylor and Ikeda talks about him as an alumni of Zero Academy. Despite having great driving sense and getting along well with others in the academy, Aiba was failing due to his temper and bad tire management. However, the weather conditions during this race allow him to advance despite his shortcomings.

While other cars make it to the Relay straight and leaders pass the starting gates, Tanaka notices that the rain has stopped. According to Ikeda, road conditions won't change significantly, but he has one concern. Kanata also notices this and has to come up with a plan to somehow increase his lead, after which he realizes that his racing instincts are coming back to him. Meanwhile, Ren is worried about Kanata becoming popular and their relationship not being the same.

As other racers enter the last lap, Tanaka gets a weather report about fog coming down on the second half of Ashinoko Skyline, where the death area is located. This raises many concerns about the continuation of the race among the MFG administration. Joyu makes his executive decision to continue the race without any limitations. He believes in ability of Godly 15 racers to handle the fog and believes Ryosuke would do the same.

The racers are approaching the foggy death area as news break out about the race continuation. Upon hearing this, Kanata realizes that this is his chance and asks Ogata to do the voice callout technique from Round 1 once again when he enters the death zone. As he goes in, he immediately passes Maezono, leaving him completely shocked. Kanata's memorization skills allow him to see the course clearly despite the lack of visibility, allowing him to rapidly shorten the gap between him and Akaba. While the commentators are discussing his drifting move on Maezono, he already passes Akaba and moves up to third place. He can't catch up to the lead group, so his goal is to increase his lead on Akaba.

Meanwhile, the commentators discuss the decision to continue the race. While Tanaka thinks it will be heavily criticized, Ikeda reminisces about his battle versus Project D as a part of Spiral Zero, when the opposing team used similar weather conditions to their advantage. To him, this decision has it's roots in the key principles of MFG, with it being a message from Ryo Takahashi. Every driver is forced to slow down, but the one, who dropped his speed the least, is Kanata Katagiri, whose driving is closely observed on the live feed.

Back at the leading group, Beckenbauer is praising Sawatari for his ability to lead in such conditions. He knows that Kouki is mentally exhausted, and that's what commentators discuss after the drivers exit the death zone. Ikeda notes that it's much harder to lead a group of cars or run alone. Ogata realizes that Kanata is in the same position right now. As he exits the fog, his gap with the leaders has gone down from 27 seconds to 15, and his lead on Akaba is 8,73 seconds, which Kanata fears might not be enough.

Differences from the Manga

  • The flashbacks that showed the battles between Project D and Team Spiral were an anime addition.
  • The segments with Nozomi overtaking Ohtani from Chapter 84 as well as Marie talking to Ren and Kyoko from Chapter 85 are not present in the episode.

Trivia

  • The Scene that showcased Takumi's AE86 is taken from Chapter 569 of Initial D's 40th Volume.
  • An error can be found at the 13:45 mark, where Yosuke Ohtani and Takuya Yanagida's icons are mis-coloured, with Yosuke's being coloured Silver instead of Green, and Takuya's being coloured White, Blue and Red instead of Orange.
  • Another error can be found on the scene where Ogata was checking the computer for the gap between Kanata and Kaito, where the 86 was shown as the Spec I model, instead of the Spec II model.[3]
  • During the scene where Fumihiro states his opinions on continuing the race when the fog forms on the final lap, he says that he trust the abilities of the 15 drivers. This is technically incorrect, as Daigo Oishi retired on the previous lap, thus shortening the driver count to 14.

Quotes

  • "I was just happy to be able to participate in MFG. But now it's different. I crave the strength to compete with the top racers even without the rain." - Kanata Katagiri
