Picopico-kun

The Picopico-kun (ピコピコくん Pikopiko-kun) is the boss of the second Wily Castle stage of Mega Man 2. It is a guard system room with blocks that form into mini-robots, that was originally created by Dr. Light to protect his home. When Dr. Wily saw their effectiveness, he added a modified version of them to his fortress. They attack by simply flying toward Mega Man. When fourteen of these enemies are defeated, the room simply shuts down.

Mega Man 2

Picopico-kun is the boss of Wily Stage 2. Mega Man enters a guard system room filled with pink blocks, which form into mini-robots that attack. There are 14 mini-robots in total. Defeating all 14 of them shuts the room down.

Attack Pattern

The way Picopico-kun works is that 2 blocks that are parallel to each other in the room move away from their placement (the floor will still be there) to connect with each other, which forms the little mini-robot, which becomes vulnerable to attack. Once formed, the robot will move in short increments towards the player, temporarily pausing its movements as to readjust. Their speeds are dependent on which one you're fighting; they get faster and faster with each new robot. Picopico-Kun can form mini-robots not only from the walls but also from the ceiling and floor, meaning they can emerge right below your feet and surprise you. The only blind spot where they can't emerge from is the very center of the room where you drop in. Picopico-Kun also summons its mini-robots in a set order every time, which goes as follows (Horizontal means from the walls, Vertical means from the ceiling/floor):

  • UpperHorizontal -> CenterHorizontal -> LowerHorizontal -> LeftVertical -> RightVertical -> CenterHorizontal -> UpperHorizontal -> RightVertical -> LeftVertical -> LowerHorizontal -> LeftVertical -> RightVertical -> LowerHorizontal -> LeftVertical

Weaknesses

Each mini-robot has 2/3 HP. The only weapon that can destroy them instantly is Bubble Lead, which may be tricky to use as you have to be very close to the robots to place the bubble on top of them. If this weapon is not suitable, Metal Blade is a great substitute, as it can aim in all directions and hit the enemies very easily. Quick Boomerang is also viable to use.

Trivia

  • Pikopiko is a Japanese onomatopoeia that represents the digital beeping that comes out of video game console, and kun is a Japanese honorific used when referring to friends, colleagues, or young boys.
  • Picopico-kun is present in the data of Mega Man: Dr. Wily's Revenge, suggesting that it was planned to appear in the game.[1]
  • Picopico-kun is named "Block Phoenix" in The Official Guide to Mega Man.
  • In Mega Man 10, a boss called the Block Devil uses a similar attack pattern.
  • In the original design, after the bricks were destroyed, there would be no platform in their place, but programmer Matsushita rejected this because the first game was criticized for being too difficult.[2]
