Mruki was a male lion. He was the king who succeeded Brond and preceded Rego.

Initially, Mruki lived as a low-ranking member of Brond's pride. One day, when he broke his pride's Laws of Precedence, he was banished from the pride by Brond. A year later, a full-grown Mruki challenged Brond's authority and defeated him in a fight; thus, he became the new king of the pride. Eventually, Brond's son Rego returned to his homeland and defeated Mruki in a fight, after which Mruki perished in a salt pan.

Biography

Early life

Mruki lived in the Dark Continent as a member of Brond's pride. He was an orphan.[1]

Hunting

A herd of wildebeests ate grass while Brond's pride monitored them. One wildebeest sniffed the air and alerted the others to run. One wildebeest fell behind the herd, and the lions hunted it down. Their king, Brond, stood above them.

With their prey caught, the lions gathered to feast. Brond was allowed the first bite, much to the annoyance of Mruki. Lisaba scolded him for this, reminding him that Brond and his mate, Sheena, were the first to eat from the carcass, but Mruki ignored her and advanced on the fallen prey. This earned him a swipe from Weena, Sheena's younger sister, and mocking from Sheena's daughter. Mruki's annoyance was only fueled by reprimands from Skobi.[1]

Tricking Rego

One day, Mruki used a hunting game to lure Brond's son, Rego, away from the pride and into the midst of a clan of hungry hyenas. As the hyenas began to chase Rego, Mruki climbed a nearby tree to watch. However, his plan ultimately failed, as Jambo the elephant saved Rego's life.[2]

Exile from Brond's pride

One day, Brond and his pride commenced their annual trek to the north, as they were following the herds. Along the way, Mruki defied the pride's Laws of Precedence by eating an antelope that he had caught. This caused Brond to exile him from the pride.[2]

Reign as king

A year later, Brond and his pride encountered a full-grown Mruki, who challenged Brond to a fight. In the ensuing battle, Mruki defeated Brond and thus became the new king of the pride. Fearful for their lives, Rego and Brond's court jester, Bobo, fled. As king, Mruki continued to break the Laws of Precedence, including an instance in which he attacked a baby elephant.

Later, after Rego became the king of his own pride, he returned to his homeland and challenged Mruki's kingship. The two fought at a water hole, and Rego managed to win. Mruki started to limp away across a salt pan, but Rego warned him that he was in danger. Ignoring Rego's warning, Mruki kept walking, only for the crust to give way beneath him and suck him into the mire.[2]

Physical appearance

Mruki was a strong young male lion with a distinctive black mane.[2]

Personality and traits

Mruki was aggressive and impatient, as he tried to eat his pride's prey before Brond and Sheena. Additionally, he had little regard for authority or tradition and frequently challenged his pride's Laws of Precedence.[1] He was cunning and malicious, and was even willing to murder those who stood in the way of his ambitions.[2]

Trivia
