PSY 9th

PSY 9th (싸다9) is the ninth full-length album by PSY. It was released on April 29, 2022 with "That That" serving as the album's title track.

This is his first release after five years since his eighth full-length, 4x2=8, in 2017.

Background

On May 19, 2019, P NATION announced that PSY was planning to comeback with his ninth album in early July.[2] At the first of his annual concert series, Summer Swag 2019, on July 13, PSY gave fans a sneak peek of three new songs from the album: the title track "Celeb" and its b-sides "Happier" and "Everyday."[3] The music videos for "Happier" and "Celeb" were also unveiled with the latter starring Suzy.[4][5] The album's release was postponed at the time due to various reasons such as controversy surrounding Yang Hyun Suk's involvement in the sex and drug scandals and wanting to make a more complete album.[3]

On December 29, 2021, highlights from PSY's 2019 concert All Night Stand aired for SBS's year-end program.[6] The broadcast included an interview with PSY in which he shared his plans for 2022 including making a solo comeback with his ninth album.[7]

On April 12, 2022, PSY posted a teaser video on his social media accounts, confirming that he would be coming back on April 29 with PSY 9th.[8] On April 14, the album cover and track list teaser were released.[9] A day later, the first track was revealed to be "Happier" and will feature singer Crush.[10] Between April 17 and 24, more tracks were revealed featuring Sung Si Kyung, Heize, Tablo, Hwa Sa and Jessi.[11][12][13][14][15]

The album sampler was released on April 25, followed by the reveal of the title track "That That", which was produced by BTS member Suga, the day after.[16][17]

Music videos

The music video for "That That" was released the same day as the album's release. The video was filmed in mid-March on a set built on an empty sandy beach in Incheon, South Korea. PSY was grateful for Suga after going through the trouble on filming during the cold, windy, and rainy weather.[18]

On May 3, 2022, the music video for "Celeb" was officially released after three years since its sneak peek.[19]

On June 2, "That That"'s music video surpassed 200 million views, making it the first Korean music video of 2022 and PSY's seventh music video to hit 200 million views.[20]

Commercial performance

As of 9:30 a.m. KST on April 30, "That That" hit No. 1 on the iTunes Top Songs charts in at least 73 different regions as well as No. 1 on Bugs's realtime chart in Korea. Psy 9th also reached No. 1 on the iTunes Top Albums charts in several regions.[21]

On September 7, 2023, Circle Chart reported that "That That" received a platinum certification for surpassing 100 million accumulated streams.[22]
