28 Reasons is the solo debut mini album by Seulgi. It was released on October 4, 2022 with "28 Reasons" serving as the album's title track.

The physical album comes in five versions: photo book, case, and special (Good, &, Evil).

Background

On September 13, it was revealed that Seulgi will be debuting with her first mini album, 28 Reasons[1], on October 4. The album contains six songs including the title track of the same name. Seulgi will show her ability to pull off different concepts and her unique music color.[2] On September 19, a schedule poster was posted on Red Velvet's social media accounts which revealed when content leading up to the album release was going to be released.[3]

Composition

"28 Reasons" is described as a pop dance genre song. The song features a signature whistling sound alongside a groovy heavy bass. The lyrics talk about a character who is both good and evil who tries to show their innocent image and mischievous playfulness to someone they like.[4] "Dead Man Runnin'" is described as a R&B pop dance genre song. The song has a sense a tension that created by the energetic drums and synths and a grand bass drop. Seulgi participated in writing the lyrics. The lyrics talk about warning the person that had hurt them in the past outlines of an empty heart because of the pain.[5] "Bad Boy, Sad Girl" is described as a medium tempo R&B genre song that features rapper Be'O. The song gives off a lovely vibe and has a piano instrumental. The lyrics talk about two people's inner thoughts and how they both can't sleep due to their love. This song will show the unique synergy of Be'O's rapping and Seulgi's vocals.[6] "Anywhere But Home" is described as a disco style R&B pop dance genre song. The lyrics talk about going on a ride to an unknown place during a sleepless night. In the song you will hear Seulgi's dreamy vocals that will harmonize with the romantic and free atmosphere. [7] "Los Angeles" is described as an EDM pop dance genre song. The song highlights drastic techno drop with Seulgi's languid vocals following after. The lyrics talk about the city Los Angeles and the feeling of excitement and anticipation of looking for a new dream in a new place.[7] "Crown" is described as a R&B pop dance genre song. The song will give you overwhelming feelings with the synth medley and heavy drums. The chorus sounds like a shouting crowd that sends a message of grandeur. The lyrics talk about depicting the gaze of the absolute on the throne. Seulgi's vocals are impressive.[7]

Promotions

A comeback live was held on Red Velvet's YouTube channel and their Tik Tok on October 4 at 5pm KST. During the live, Seulgi communicated with fans and shared stories.[8]

Seulgi began her music show promotions and performed "28 Reasons" at M Countdown on October 6. She also be performed the song at Music Bank, Show! Music Core, Music Universe K-909, and Inkigayo.[9]

Commercial performance

28 Reasons sold 134,682 copies in its first day of release on Hanteo.[10][11] and 184,413 copies in its first week.[12]

As of October 6, 28 Reasons had reached #1 in 38 different countries on the iTunes Top Albums chart.[9]

Circle chart reported that 28 Reasons sold 171,262 copies during the week of October 2 to October 8. It debuted at #3 on the weekly chart.[13] Circle chart reported that 28 Reasons sold 206,616 copies in the month of October 2022.[14]
