Grata

"Grata follows the law. Her silence towards us is honorable, not an insult."
Rost[1]

Grata, also known as Odd Grata, is a minor character in Horizon Zero Dawn.

History

Grata mentions that during her Naming Ritual, her name was not spoken back, instead being kept close to All-Mother's heart.[2]

Grata is currently an outcast, although why she was banished and how long her sentence is is unknown. Additionally, the reason why she is known as Odd Grata is unknown.

Grata lives alone in a simple camp on a mountainside close to Rost and Aloy's hovel. Being too elderly to hunt for herself, Rost and Aloy would hunt for her.[3] She used to make the journey to the Overlook Climb to pray until she was unable to make the climb anymore.[2]

Odd Grata (HZDR; 01)

Rost told Aloy that Grata was likely out of food by now. Aloy paid Grata a visit, hearing her praying to All-Mother to provide for her, which Aloy understood as a request for rabbit meat. Grata then told All-Mother how she would count her blessings on her prayer beads, but she had lost them on the Overlook Climb. Aloy agreed to go find her prayer beads as well.[4]

Upon delivering the meat and prayer beads to Grata in her camp, she prays in gratitude to All-Mother. Aloy tells Grata that she may not be around for a while as she's going to run in the Proving and isn't sure what will happen after. Grata responds by thanking All-Mother for her kindness and prays that she give favor to a Brave of generous heart in the Proving.

Upon delivering the meat and prayer beads to Grata in her camp, she prays in gratitude to All-Mother. Aloy warns Grata be careful as the Embrace isn't as safe as it used to be and since Rost is gone and she has been made a Seeker, Aloy needs Grata to be strong on her own. Grata responds by telling All-Mother that her memories of saplings and fledglings growing, becoming strong and passing from her sight are her treasure.

Personality

Grata is extremely pious, devoted to All-Mother and praying nearly all the time, ever since she was young;[2] the only time she is heard speaking is when she is praying to All-Mother.[4]

Grata follows Nora law and therefore does not directly speak to Aloy, much to Aloy's annoyance.[5][3] However, Grata indirectly addresses Aloy under the guise of praying to All-Mother. She expresses whatever gratitude she has to Aloy through her verbal prayer and also changes the subject of her prayers to the Proving when Aloy explained that she wouldn't be around for a while as she takes part in the event.[4]

Trivia

  • Grata's name might be derived from the Latin word "grata" which means "thankful".
  • It is widely speculated by fans that Grata was the Brave that lost a mate and two sons to the twelve outlanders who invaded Mother's Vigil and was who crossed the border to pull Rost back across it into the Sacred Lands after he collapsed at it, breaking taboo.[6] If true, this could be why Grata's an outcast and would explain why Rost shows particular concern for her.
  • Despite Aloy telling Grata that she would bring rabbit meat for her, it actually doesn't matter what animal the meat comes from.[4]
  • Grata wears the same face paint as Kam and Yun. Interestingly, all three of them are outcasts.
  • It is possible to receive two sets of Grata's prayer beads by taking the long way around over the North Gate first.
