The Vortigaunts are an alien race in the Half-Life video game series. They are a species of creatures living in Xen.
They were voiced by the late Lou Gossett Jr. in Half-Life 2 and Half-Life 2: Episode One, and the late Tony Todd in Half-Life 2: Episode Two and Half-Life: Alyx.
Biography
Background
Before the arrival of Gordon Freeman, the Vortigaunts once served the Nihilanth.
Half-Life
During the Resonance Cascade, the Vortigaunts invaded Earth along with several Xenian creatures via the Black Mesa Research Facility in New Mexico.
Eventually, Gordon defeats the Nihilanth, unintentionally freeing the Vortigaunts from their master.
Half-Life: Alyx
On her journey to rescue her father, Alyx Vance meets a Vortigaunt named Gary.
Half-Life 2
The Vortigaunt encountered by Gordon works as a cleaner for the Combine in City 17 Trainstation. Another one is encountered hiding with a refugee at the start of the canals.
During the chapter "Water Hazard" Gordon can encounter the All-Knowing Vortigaunt hiding in a tunnel.
In the chapter "Black Mesa East", several Vortigaunts work at the facility as Eli's assistants or as cooks.
Half-Life 2: Episode One
The Vortigaunts free Gordon and Alyx from the G-Man's stasis and protect them from his presence for the rest of the game.
Half-Life 2: Episode Two
The Vortigaunts rescue Alyx, who had been gravely injured by a Combine Hunter and nearly devoured by Antlions. Using a larval extract, the Vortigaunts were able to revive Alyx.
