~ Alyx Vance. |
Alyx Vance is the deuteragonist of Half-Life franchise
She is the daughter of former Black Mesa scientist named Eli Vance, a woman in her mid-twenties, and a prominent figure in the Resistance opposing the Combine oppression.
She is voiced by Merle Dandridge in Half-Life 2, Episode One, and Episode Two (who also portrayed Marlene in The Last of Us) and by Ozioma Akagha in Alyx.
History
Background
As a young child, Alyx lived in the dormitories of the Black Mesa Research Facility along with her father Eli and her mother Azian, while Eli was working in the Anomalous Materials Laboratory. When the Black Mesa Incident occurs, Eli manages to escape along with Alyx and a family picture, while Azian was killed in the incident. Over the course of the incident, the G-Man was primarily responsible for rescuing Alyx, despite the objections of unknown naysayers. Alyx was too young to remember that this happened, and Eli never shared this story with her despite witnessing it.
Alyx was raised by Eli in a world controlled by the combine-empire, likely spending much of her time at Black Mesa East. During this time, Alyx also had a very good relationship with Isaac Kleiner, often affectionately referring to him as "Uncle Kleiner." She even drew a portrait of him with this name. During Alyx's childhood, Eli used pieces of Scrap Metal to create Dog, a sentient robot designed to protect her, being both physically powerful and intelligent. It even has a sixth-sense so that it always knows Alyx's location. While the initial model was rather short, Alyx has been adding to him ever since, making him a towering 2.5 meters high at the time of the second game.
After reaching adulthood, Alyx began working with the Resistance. She is a core member of the City-17 branch at the start of the game, her contributions to the movement include helping Barney and Kleiner in helping citizens escape City-17 to Black Mesa East through the old canals. She also helped Judith Mossman and Kleiner establish a teleporter between his lab and Black Mesa East.
Half-Life 2
Alyx Vance plays a crucial role in Half-Life 2, assisting Gordon Freeman more frequently and directly than any other character. She first appears in the opening chapter, Point Insertion, where she rescues Gordon from Civil Protection officers who have intercepted him as an unarmed civilian. Though her takedown of the officers occurs off-screen, Alyx quickly proves her resourcefulness by guiding Gordon to Dr. Kleiner's lab. At the lab, they reunite with Barney and Dr. Kleiner. After Gordon dons his HEV suit, they attempt to teleport to Eli Vance's lab in Black Mesa East. However, the teleportation malfunctions, forcing Gordon to navigate City 17 on his own.
When Gordon eventually reaches Black Mesa East, Alyx and her father, Eli, welcome him. Alyx provides Gordon with the Gravity Gun, demonstrating its capabilities. Tensions between Alyx and Dr. Judith Mossman are evident, culminating in Mossman’s betrayal in the chapter Entanglement. During this chapter, Gordon helps Alyx search Nova Prospekt to rescue Eli.
In the chapter Anticitizen One, Alyx fights alongside Gordon during the uprising in City 17. The two are separated again when Alyx is captured by Overwatch soldiers while scouting an escape route. They reunite in the chapter Dark Energy at Dr. Breen’s office in the Citadel, where Alyx indirectly assists Gordon during the confrontation with Breen. By this point, Alyx and Mossman seem to have reconciled, as Mossman turns on Breen and helps free Gordon, Eli, and Alyx.
Half-Life 2: Episode One
At the game’s conclusion, Alyx is present during the Dark Energy explosion in the Citadel. While the G-Man rescues Gordon from the blast, Alyx is seemingly frozen in time. She survives thanks to the intervention of Vortigaunts, who also free Gordon from the G-Man's influence. Together, Alyx and Gordon revisit the Citadel to delay its core's destruction. They escape City 17 on the last Resistance train just as the Citadel explodes, concluding Episode One.
Half-Life 2: Episode Two
In Episode Two, Alyx remains by Gordon’s side for most of the game. She rescues him from their crashed train at the start of the story using the Gravity Gun. After they establish contact with White Forest, a major Resistance base, Alyx is gravely injured by a Hunter. Gordon and a Vortigaunt retrieve Antlion extract to heal her. During her recovery, the G-Man appears to Gordon, revealing that he saved Alyx as a child during the Black Mesa incident, defying orders from his superiors. He instructs Gordon to ensure Alyx’s safe arrival at White Forest and has Alyx deliver the cryptic message “prepare for unforeseen consequences” to Eli.
As they journey to White Forest, Alyx provides invaluable support, such as sniping enemies and assisting in combat while Gordon drives their vehicle. At the game’s climax, an Advisor kills Eli, leaving Alyx and Gordon helpless, pinned by the creature’s psionic powers. Just as the Advisor prepares to attack, Dog intervenes, injuring the Advisor and forcing it to flee. The game ends with Alyx grieving over her father’s body while Gordon loses consciousness, setting the stage for the next chapter.
Half-Life: Alyx
Five years before Gordon Freeman's return, Eli and Alyx Vance are captured by the Combine while attempting to intercept a shipment of mini-reactors. Alyx is rescued by Russell, but Eli is sent on a train bound for Nova Prospekt. After obtaining the Gravity Gloves, Alyx manages to derail the train and free her father. When Eli is nearly lost in the wreckage, the Vortigaunt Gary saves him from falling. Eli then returns to Russell's lab, where he works on decrypting a Combine datapod. The data reveals the existence of a mysterious floating prison called the Vault. Believing the Vault holds someone connected to the Black Mesa incident who had since disappeared, Alyx and Eli conclude that the Combine might be holding Gordon Freeman. Alyx decides to infiltrate the Vault. Before she can, Eli realizes something terrible but cannot stop her in time. Inside, Alyx opens a cell, hoping to free Gordon, only to unintentionally release the G-Man.
The G-Man shows Alyx a vision of the future where her father dies at the hands of an Advisor at White Forest. He offers her the chance to intervene, allowing her to prevent Eli's death by killing the Advisor. Impressed by her actions, the G-Man deems Alyx valuable and a potential replacement for someone who failed to meet his expectations. He briefly shows her an image of Gordon Freeman before leaving her suspended in darkness.
As a result of Alyx's intervention, Eli survives the events of Episode Two. However, Alyx is taken by the G-Man and placed in stasis to "await assignment." In the altered timeline, Eli, furious at the G-Man’s interference, vows to destroy him. Handing Gordon his iconic crowbar, Eli declares, "We have work to do."
Appearance
Alyx Vance has short brown hair with hints of red, a nod to her originally red hair. She wears a headband and has striking green eyes. Her outfit, like those of most characters in Half-Life 2, is practical and worn. It consists of a brown leather jacket with the right sleeve secured by duct tape, jeans, and brown work boots. Underneath her jacket, she wears a gray hooded sweater featuring the Black Mesa logo and the words "Black Mesa." Her accessories include black fingerless rappelling gloves, a tensor bandage wrapped around her right hand (though it’s unclear whether it serves a practical purpose or is purely decorative), and a green belt holding her gun and Multi-tool. From certain angles, her purple underwear is partially visible at the back. Around her neck, she wears a small box-shaped pendant, possibly made of wood or metal, which is believed to have belonged to her mother based on the Vance family photo. She also has a nevus at the base of her neck.
In Episode One, Alyx gains a small scar above her right eyebrow, likely caused by the events at the end of Half-Life 2 when she was pulled from the rubble. During Episode Two, her jacket is further damaged when she is injured by a Hunter, leaving bloodstains on her undershirt
Personality and skills
Alyx is a skilled hacker, capable of operating and manipulating Combine-based technology such as turrets with the help of her equipment. She also uses an EMP Tool to perform a variety of tasks.
Together with her father, Eli, Alyx "put together" the Shorepoint Scout Car and assisted Dr. Kleiner in "resurrecting" his teleport.
She is proficient with pistols, shotguns, and hand-to-hand combat. Early in Half-Life 2, she single-handedly defeats six Civil Protection officers who nearly capture Gordon during his escape from the tenement block. She also briefly fights alongside Gordon during the chapters Entanglement and Anticitizen One. In Episode One, Alyx accompanies Gordon for most of the game, showcasing new combat skills, including using a shotgun and physically defending herself by kicking or kneeing Zombies when they get too close. Additionally, she demonstrates proficiency with sniper rifles in both Episode One and Episode Two, providing cover for Gordon using Overwatch sniper rifles.
Despite her friendly nature, Alyx initially displays hostility toward Dr. Mossman due to Mossman's patronizing attitude and apparent interest in Eli. However, this animosity seems to dissipate by the end of Half-Life 2 when Dr. Mossman helps free Alyx and Eli from Dr. Breen's clutches.
Alyx is cheerful and optimistic, often using humor to lighten tense situations. For instance, she playfully mocks Gordon's silence at the start of Half-Life 2, saying, "Man of few words, aren't you?" In the Episode One chapter Lowlife, she and Gordon navigate Zombie-infested tunnels, during which she pretends to imitate a Zombie growl to scare him, only to laugh and say, "Gotcha!" when he realizes it was her. Later, while entering a Combine troop train, she humorously names a dead Overwatch Soldier with a Headcrab on its head a "Zombine."
Alyx's sensitivity adds emotional depth to the series. She reacts with disbelief and distress upon seeing the deteriorating state of the Citadel’s interior and is deeply affected by the plight and behavior of Stalkers in the Lowlife chapter. Her emotional vulnerability is most evident at the end of Episode Two when she breaks down in tears over the loss of her father.
Miscellaneous Information
She is roughly 178 cm (5'10") tall, and has an athletic build. She has black hair and green eyes.
Alyx was born in 2005 and was thus 19-years old in Half Life Alyx and 24 in Half Life 2.

Trivia
- Unlike other games that feature extremely vulnerable mission-critical characters, Half-Life 2 gives Alyx the ability to absorb a large amount of damage before death (due to the fact that her health regenerates extremely rapidly). It is still possible for her to die during combat however, and at several points the player is required to protect her from taking damage. Her death will result in a black screen fade and failure message, then the game will reload. It takes five simultaneous Overwatch Sniper Rifle shots to kill her, indicating that she can absorb an extremely high amount of damage. Alyx can often successfully defeat several enemies at once without the player's assistance, but she is vulnerable to multiple enemies mobbing her at close range, or to individual Combine Soldiers equipped with shotguns.
- Just before Alyx and Gordon meet with Barney, a rebel asks Alyx if she is Kleiner's daughter and she sarcastically claims that she is the daughter of Odessa Cubbage, mirroring somehow the early stages of Half-Life 2 's production when she was to be the daughter of another military man, Captain Vance, before the character was merged with scientist Eli Maxwell as Eli Vance.
