UrSu is the overarching protagonist of The Dark Crystal franchise. He is the Master of the UrRu and his Skeksis counterpart is SkekSo the Emperor. He is also the adoptive father of Jen, who he raises for the sole purpose of restoring the Crystal of Truth.
He was performed and voiced by Brian Meehl.
Biography
Background
UrSu had led the UrRu ever since the split of the Crystal, and decided that all of them would adopt a non-interventionist policy in which the UrRu wouldn't intervene with Thra's affairs unless being called upon by the Crystal itself. Although most of them agreed, some, like UrMa, UrVa and UrGoh questioned this, which led to the latter's banishment. He also refused to stop the Skeksis from going to war with the Makraks despite Raunip's pleads, but soon changed his mind and took a part in the negotiation so that Raunip would lead the Makraks to the Field of Fire.
During the Garthim War, UrSu finally abandoned his non-interventionist policy after witnessing the Skeksis massacring the Gelflings, and adopted Jen as well as raising him for the sole purpose of restoring the Crystal.
The Dark Crystal
After the Garthim War, UrSu's health deteriorates due to his counterpart SkekSo's abuse of the Darkening. However, after deeming Jen ready for his task, he refuses to take any medication so as to drag SkekSo to the grave with him, knowing that the latter's death would send the Skeksis into disarray. Eventually, before dying, he calls Jen in and reveals the task to him and tells him to find the Shard of the Division in Aughra's observatory.
After revealing everything, UrSu dies in peace and his body vanishes. Jen and the UrRu respectfully hold a funeral for him, and he is succeeded by UrIm. Jen then goes on his way to retrieve the Shard to restore the Crystal, and the UrRu also leave the Valley of the UrRu to come to the Crystal chamber in time before the Great Conjunction so that they can reunite with their Skeksis counterparts and become the UrSkeks again.
Eventually, Jen and the UrRu succeed in their respective tasks, proving that UrSu's faith is in the right person.
