Big Bird (born March 20, 1963) is one of the three main protagonists of the Sesame Street franchise (along with Elmo and Cookie Monster).
He is a tall, 8'2" six-year-old bird muppet who lives on a nest next to 123 Sesame Street. He is also the main protagonist of the Warner Bros. film Sesame Street Presents: Follow That Bird.
Big Bird was performed by the late Caroll Spinney, who was also the puppeteer of Oscar the Grouch. As of now, Big Bird is currently performed by Matt Vogel.
Appearance
True to his name, Big Bird is an inexplicably large, yellow bird, and is perpetually stuck at age six.
Personality
Originally, in the early episodes of Sesame Street, Big Bird was dopey, dim-witted, clueless and somewhat stupid. However, as the years passed, Big Bird now has childlike innocence and is now sweet, kind, caring, warm-hearted, gentle, and generous. Because of his benevolent nature, this allows him to easily make friends with many children. Big Bird is shown to be very talented as he is good at different skills such as writing poems, rollerskating, riding a unicycle, singing, dancing, drawing, driving a horse-drawn cart, and understanding different bird languages such as Bird, Turkey and Chicken. Despite his intelligence and his talents, he is prone to misunderstandings such as mispronouncing the name of his friend Mr. Hooper, whom Big Bird would call "Mr. Looper", and thinking that all the letters of the alphabet are a single word, as stated in his song ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ.
He is also very helpful towards his friends but it is usually if he wants to or if he wants to achieve something. It would sometimes go wrong due to Big Bird being quite accident-prone. Because of his kind-hearted nature, he has formed strong/close relationships with those he cares about such as Mr. Snuffleupagus (or Snuffy for short), Elmo, Mr. Hooper, Gordon, Maria, Luis, David, etc. big Bird is also really attached to stuff and people he loves such as his teddy bear Radar, his friends, his nest, and his grandmother Granny Bird. He strongly loves and cares for his Sesame Street friends, both his human and muppet friends and to the point where he sees them as family, which they claimed, as evident in Follow That Bird.
From 1971 to 1985, Big Bird expressed frustration when trying to reveal Mr. Snuffleupagus to his human adult friends, no matter how hard he tried, and got tired of them not believing him. However, when they finally saw Snuffy with their own eyes, which left them shocked and stunned, Big Bird became jubilant to the point where he began gloating to his friends that Snuffy is really real and not imaginary.
Despite his kindness, Big Bird has trouble standing up for himself such as when Bad Barney would bully and boss him into doing what he wants. As a result of this, he often has to get up from his adult friends on what he should do. Though he has shown bravery and was able to stand up to Bad Barney, he, nonetheless, still remained afraid of him, as revealed in Episode 0955. Big Bird is really attached to his home on Sesame Street and is shown to get homesick at times, an example being as when he has to go to summer camp for a whole week, this leads him to really miss his home while on his first night at Camp.
Though Big Bird is always generous with others and loves to share his things with them, in Episode 4188, after being infected with the Grouch disease Mine-itis, his generosity and kind-hearted nature was entirely gone and he became selfish and greedy, to the point where he hoarded his teddy bear all to himself and not allow anyone to touch or even play with it. This is shown as when his friend Elmo politely asks him if he could hug Radar, Big Bird, due to having Mine-itis, greedily hoards his teddy bear tightly and selfishly shout "MINE!". However, after being cured, thanks to the reluctant kindness of Oscar the Grouch, Big Bird's selfishness and greediness were immediately wiped away and he returned to his normal self.
Biography
Big Bird was born on March 20, 1963, to unnamed parents and throughout his early life was raised by both his aunt Nani Bird and Granny Bird. By the time he is six years old (in bird years) in 1969, Big Bird left home to live on his own. Moving to Sesame Street, he made his nest beside the 123 apartment building and made it his own home.
