Slinky Dog is a major character in the Toy Story franchise. He is one of Woody's best friends.
He was voiced by the late Jim Varney in the first two films, and currently by Blake Clark, who also portrayed Stenchy the Clown in the movie Shakes the Clown.
History
Toy Story
Slinky is used by Andy as a force field when playing with his toys. Slinky first talks to Woody under Andy's bed where he offers checkers for Woody. He is informed that there's some bad news to share at the upcoming meeting and accidentally blurts it out before attending it. During the meeting, he and the other toys look at the children carrying presents for Andy's last birthday in his old house. All the toys go into a panic and later followed the red alert said by Sarge about Andy coming to his room. Slinky and the other toys watch Buzz Lightyear do some fake flying in his room and later getting exercise during the song, "Strange Things".
That evening, Slinky and the other toys thought Woody knocked Buzz out the window. Bo Peep attempts to stop the angry toys, but later froze when Andy came into his room to bring only one toy to Pizza Planet and decided on Woody since he couldn't find Buzz.
The next day, Slinky and the other toys are playing all alone without Woody until Woody looks at them from the window of Sid's house. Due to Buzz's lack of cooperation, he tries to make it to Andy's house by mimicking him, but when they discover he's just using his unattached arm, they mistakenly think he's outright murdered him and take back the cord they were going to use to let him cross from Sid's window to theirs. Slinky, however, looks sad about leaving Woody there since he doesn't want to believe that Woody would do anything like that, but because of the evidence, he sorrowfully closes the blinds on him. That night, he and the other toys used a Barrel of Monkeys to find Buzz Lightyear. However, Buzz is currently with Sid and all they did was scare a cat hiding in the bush.
When Andy and his mother leave their old house, he and the other toys are put in a crate inside the Eggman Movers truck. When Woody open up the crate they're in to get RC, Slinky mistakenly believes Woody is trying to use him for an underhanded reason (even though he felt sad when Woody was being tossed overboard by the other toys), but later realizes to his surprise, that he was actually trying to save Buzz and help him get on board after escaping Sid's house together. He later tries to pull them onto the moving truck, but he's eventually unable to hold on any longer due to being stretched so far that he's nearly destroyed in the process. However, they managed to reach the car Andy was in after igniting the rocket attached to Buzz with sunlight and narrowly escaping it before it exploded. He is last seen running for cover when, while being propelled by the rocket, Woody drops RC into the truck, which hits Mr. Potato Head and scatters his pieces all over the place.
That Christmas, Slinky and the other toys listened to Sarge about the news of what new gifts Andy was receiving.
Toy Story 2
Slinky found Woody's hat when Andy is getting ready to leave. Slinky and the other toys were worried that Woody has been taken by Al McWhiggin.
When Buzz Lightyear sets out a plan, to rescue him, he's one of the toys that volunteers to go along. Later on, he and the other toys wear road cones to cross the lake into Al's Toy Barn. When they finally arrive at the hotel where Woody is to rescue him, Slinky and the other toys go through an air vent leading to the room where Woody, Bullseye, Jessie, and The Prospector are in. Slinky got antagonistic with Bullseye, making Jessie upset. Back at the elevator, Zurg tries to stop Buzz Lightyear and his toys, but the other Buzz fought him while most of the others escaped to go after Woody when he was taken to the airport with the other members of The Roundup Gang.
While on a mission to the airport, Slinky and the other toys first scared a girl and distracted Stinky Pete with cameras. Later on, he and the other toys return home and listen to Wheezy singing the theme song of Toy Story.
Toy Story 3
Slinky is used as a force field again summoned by Mr. Potato Head when being played with by Andy. Slinky is also seen in Andy's memories before growing up into a teenager. Later on, he and the other toys were donated to Sunnyside Daycare. Inside the daycare, Slinky and the other toys are played with by the toddlers roughly and later imprisoned by Lotso. Slinky and the other toys set out a plan to escape with the aid of Buzz Lightyear, who was turned into Spanish Mode. Slinky and the other toys almost got shredded in the dump and later incinerated by the dump's fire. The Little Green Men rescued them from being burned with a giant claw. Slinky is later donated to Bonnie and seen staying at her house along with the rest of Andy's favorite toys in many of the following shorts and Toy Story 4.

Trivia
- His catchphrase "Golly bob-howdy!" is a tribute to Jim Varney's most popular character, Ernest P. Worrell.
- He is based on Slinky, a pull toy produced by James Industries, popular in the 50's-early 70's. With the permission of James Industries, Slinky Dog was partially redesigned for Toy Story by Pixar artist Bud Luckey to make him more appealing as an animated character.
- Blake Clark took over his role as Varney sadly died in 2000 of lung cancer which was shortly after the second film was released worldwide.
- Varney was also good friends with Clark before his passing, having met on the set of Fast Food, thus making the transition a lot easier.
- Hence having a half loop on his chest, he appears to be missing a rope, as his real-life counterpart comes with one, and notably the rope is used to pull the toy, however Slinky himself appears to be missing one, so he likely lost it prior to the events of the first film.
- However, the Toy Story 4 release of him does include a rope.
- Originally, he was intended to be one of Andy's more unpopular toys and the least played with, and Woody being very abusive towards him until Slinky teamed up with the other toys helping them throw him out of the window for throwing Buzz out. This backstory was scrapped after the scene almost resulted in Toy Story being cancelled on Black Friday.
