Shiro is the main protagonist of the anime OVA Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team. He is the pilot for the RX-79 Gundam Ground type and a soldier for the Earth Federation.
He is voiced by Nobuyuki Hiyama in the Japanese version and Steve Staley in the English version of the anime.
History
Shiro was present during the first weeks of the One Year War, as he witnessed the Zeon GG poison gas attacks on the colonies kill many innocent colony citizens. Shiro barely survived as he was wearing a sealed space suit and developed a deep hatred for the Zeon. Shiro continued to serve the Earth Federation Forces and eventually graduated from officer training school, he then transferred to Earth to take command of the 08th Mobile Suit Team.
While transporting to Earth, Shiro receives a distressed signal from a damaged GM and attempts to rescue the GM. He manages to save the pilot, Terry Sanders Jr., and destroyed the Zaku, his ball becomes damaged but manages to escape it before it exploded. Shiro decides to follow the Zeon pilot who was attempting to escape and engaged in a shootout where Shiro eventually tackled the Zeon pilot and found out it was a woman who was wounded and the two began to aid each other and called their allies to rescue them. The two escaped and the Zeon soldier tells Shiro her name is Aina as the two pilots went back to their respective allies.
After arriving on Earth, Shiro, Michel, and Terry join up with the rest of the 08th Team, where Shiro is given the unit 081 as his mobile suit. Shiro continues to complete missions and hones his abilities as a pilot while also earning trust from his fellow co-pilots. Shiro later learns that Aina was the pilot of the Apsaras mobile armor to which his relationship to her has become a concern for the rest of the team. Shiro's reputation starts to plummet as he is beginning to be branded as a traitor, which worsens after the battle with the Apsaras lll and the capture of Zeon's mountain fortress where Shiro deserts the Earth Federation to rescue Aina which pushes Captain Isan Ryer to give the order to kill Shiro. Shiro and Aina manage to destroy Apsaras and the two disappear as Shiro's Gundam falls into the volcano with the Apsaras and the two are presumed dead.
Unbeknownst to the Earth Federation. Shiro survived, although he lost his lower left leg, but escaped. After the war, Shiro married Aina and settled down in a log cabin hidden in the mountains where Michel and Kiki find the two alive. Shiro was happy to see the two and Michel and Kiki see that Aina is pregnant with Shiro's child.
Personality
Shiro is very optimistic and enthusiastic as he has a strong desire to fight for justice and take down the Zeon for their massive atrocities on the colonies. His mindset began to alter after his fateful encounter with a Zeon soldier Aina Sahalin, who he falls in love with. As he continued to command the 08th MS Team his thoughts on the enemy continued to change as he wants to understand the other side of the enemy so he can be with Aina and reconcile both sides in peace. His superiors were disgusted by this change of side to Shiro and criticized him as they only believed that the only way to achieve victory is through bloodshed which makes Shiro lose his loyalty to the Earth Federation. During the battle against Apsaras lll, Shiro was considered MIA/KIA which he used to escape with Aina and start a new life away from war. Shiro is now happy living with Aina as his wife who is pregnant with his child.
