Detective Senior Sergeant Reg Masters, aka The Ferret, is a supporting character of Stingers. He is the Head of the Drug Squad, who sometimes co-operates with the Undercover unit in specific investigations involving drugs, while at times clashing with them as well.

He served as a minor supporting character from season two to season five, a minor antagonist in season six, and a major supporting character from season seven to season eight.

He was portrayed by the late Richard Morgan.

Personality

Masters is often shown to be a rude, arrogant, egotistical, snarky and impatient person, who is generally disliked by both fellow officers and criminals alike due to his attitude, which earned him the dubious nickname "The Ferret". Despite this, he is also shown at times to be an effective police officer and unit commander, being able to take down drug dealers and distributors with the help of the Undercover unit.

Notable Storylines

During season seven, Masters makes a deal with convicted drug dealer Troy Thorpe to have him testify against his associate Daniel Tedesco after Thorpe was attacked by several inmates connected to Tedesco. However, Masters needs corroborative evidence to prove Tedesco’s testimony, prompting him to reveal that Angie Piper’s sister Samantha was his girlfriend and courier. Masters later confronts Angie about this and demand to know Sam’s location, but Angie stonewalls him, prompting Masters to get Internal Affairs to launch an investigation into Angie for helping Sam escape in the original investigation against Thorpe, but he later drops the accusations against her when Sam voluntarily surrenders to him with Luke Harris’ help, and later makes a deal with Harris that Sam will serve no jail time if she helps Masters corroborate Thorpe’s testimony against Tedesco. However, Thrope is later murdered in prison after the news of his deal with Masters is leaked by one of the Internal Affairs officers under Tedesco’s payroll, and Sam flees after hearing of Thorpe’s death, putting the case against Tedesco in jeopardy and causes Masters to verbally lash out at Angie. Despite this, Masters later helps the unit and Sam rescue Angie when she is held hostage by Tedesco, and calls for an ambulance for Sam after she is accidently shot by Angie when she fights Tedesco for his gun moments before he is arrested.

Masters later organizes a joint Drug Squad-Undercover investigation with Harris into drug kingpin Ethan Stein, after he obtains crucial information from the informant of one of his officers Megan Walsh, whom he is secretly attracted to. Both Masters and Harris send Peter Church to go undercover for the sting on Stein, but the operation becomes complicated as Church discovers that Stein's wife is none other than his ex-fiancée Anna Trukan. Nevertheless, after a few delays, it seems that the sting operation will go as planned, until on the day of the sting, when Masters, along with Angie and Harris, discover that Church's cover has been blown as that Stein is on the way to kill him. However, Church is ultimately rescued by Megan, who kills Stein before he can shoot Church. Master later talks to Megan, and asks her if they could spend some time together for dinner, but Megan tells Masters that Harris offered her a spot in the Undercover unit, which she accepted. Masters seems to be okay with Megan's decision, but after she leaves, he storms to Harris' office and angrily confronts him for stealing one of his officers, but Harris simply tells Masters to get over it, prompting Masters to throw one more insult towards Harris before storming out of his office.

Masters makes his final appearance in the penultimate episode "The Heart is a Lonely Hunter", when he confronts Church and Leo Flynn after they attack Master's latest target Max Manton, since they suspect that Manton was involved in the attempted murder of Sophie Novak, but Masters tells them that Manton was actually in Warrnambool working as a hired muscle for a couple of Asian drug dealers on the night of Sophie's attack, ruling him out as a suspect. Masters then tells Church that if he knew that he was after Manton for Sophie's attack, he would've informed him beforehand, before leaving to take Manton into police custody.
