Biography
Nick Torris was an Undercover operative who worked under Bernie Rocca before Peter Church was in the unit, he ultimately resigned from the unit after his partner Chris was kill on-duty during a sting operation, partly blaming Rocca for his partner’s death. He moved interstate to live in the bush, dropping off the radar for a while, likely suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder.
Three years later, Nick as asked to come back to the Undercover unit to help with a case. After being picked up from the airport by Kaye Kelso, he meets with Rocca for the first time in three years, before being told by Rocca that he was brought in as he is needed to go undercover to infiltrate a Romanian gang that just recently killed a cop, since Nick is of Romanian descent and can speak the language. Nick quickly becomes angry, as he was told he was only supposed to be there in an advisory role, and prepares to leave when Rocca tells him that the command to bring him in came from Rocca’s superiors, and reminds him that this gang killed a fellow cop. Kaye then takes Nick to a safehouse, where he tells her his history in Undercover, including his partner being killed.
The next day, Nick is introduced to the rest of the unit at the briefing, where they find out that Nick is going undercover under the alias Stephen Ionesco, for this operation into Mikail Menduso and his Romanian gang, with Kaye also joining him as his girlfriend. Nick is concerned for Kaye’s well-being due to her being completely inexperienced. However, Rocca’s second-in-command, Ellen MacKenzie also places Oscar Stone as backup for Nick and Kaye.
Nick and Kaye arrive at the Post Office Hotel, where Mikail and his gang hang out, and after a short period of time, Nick approaches Mikail and his gang playing cards offering to join in, only to be attacked by one of Mikail’s henchmen. Nick is ultimately saved by Kaye, as she ruses to him and yells at them to let him go, allowing Nick to claim that he’s connected to an associate of Mikail’s who is currently in jail. Mikail tells Nick to return the next day while he verifies his connection to his associate. Nick is later driven back to the safe house by Kaye, whom he thanks for saving him earlier, before giving her some advice to never forget her real identity, as it is easy to do in Undercover, before getting out of Kaye’s car.
The next day, Nick and Kaye arrive at the hotel once again, and Nick speaks to Mikail claiming that he is looking for work. Mikail tells him that they don’t involve outsiders, allowing Nick to gain his trust by telling him in Romanian that he’s not an outsider. Mikail then tells Nick to come with him for a drive, while Kaye is forced to stay back. Nick also has his phone taken off of him, but Kaye quickly grabs it and keeps it hidden, allowing her to tell Mac which car Nick and Mikail are driving in just as they are departing, to allow Angie Piper and Stone to tail them. While Nick is driving with Mikail to their supposed location, Mikail gives him a gun and tells him that his first job is a hit on someone. This causes Nick, possibly as a result of his PTSD, to panic in fear of his life, as he begins to drive dangerously fast before hitting the breaks and aims his gun at Mikail before fleeing from him, putting the investigation into the gang at risk.
Rocca later finds out from the Homicide unit's Bill Hollister where Nick is staying, and visits him at a motel, where they begin to talk. Nick tells Rocca that he wants him to get out of his life, but he knows Rocca’s incapable of it. He then tells Rocca that he never wanted to be dragged back into undercover work, and that he was scared that he was going to die when he was in the car with Mikail, just like his partner years ago, before grabbing his gun as he asks Rocca if he remembers his partner, Chris. However, Rocca tells Nick that he’s not around to make amends, and that it’s his job to make decisions, but Nick responds back by telling him that he doesn’t want to live with his decisions any longer. Rocca tries to offer Nick some help, but Nick sarcastically asks him if he can give him his life back, before telling Rocca to leave as he takes Nick's gun off of him. Rocca apologises to an emotional Nick before leaving his motel room.
Despite Nick now being out of the investigation, Kaye decides to remain undercover to take down Mikail and his gang, which she manages to succeed with Church’s help. Shortly afterwards, Rocca suggests to Kaye that she give Nick a call However, it’s unknown if she does contact Nick or not prior to her departure from the unit after almost getting killed in her follow-up investigation.
