Mark, also known as Mr. Satan, or Hercule (depending on the versions), is a supporting character in the Dragon Ball franchise.
He is voiced by the late Daisuke Gōri, the late Unshō Ishizuka, and later Masashi Ebara in Japanese and Don Brown (Oceans Group), Chris Rager (Funimation), Dave Pettitt (Blue Water), Paul Bandey (AD Groupe), and Jamieson Price (Bang Zoom) in English.
Biography
The Tenkaichi Budokai champion, Mr. Satan is widely known all over the world as the strongest man alive and a celebrity hero. He is the father of Videl, the father-in-law of Gohan, and the maternal grandfather of Pan. He first appears during the Cell Saga, to fight Cell who started attacking the planet. However, even though Satan is strong for a human, he is considerably much weaker in strength compared to the Z Warriors and gets thrown out of the ring without even hurting his "opponent," who merely paid attention to him.
During the following fights, Mr. Satan pretends to be ill, and that all the others are cheating. He, however, accepts to take Android 16's head to Gohan, which proves useful, since it convinced the boy to fight Cell with all his power. After the fights are over, Satan takes credit for killing Cell, and is labeled a hero.
Years later, Satan is called again to fight Majin Buu, and again is too weak to defeat him. Instead, he manages to become Boo's friend, and convinces him to stop killing. Though Buu later mutates into an even more dangerous monster, neither him nor Satan forget about their previous friendship. Thanks to this link and to his newfound courage (mostly when he starts believing the whole story is a simple dream) Satan becomes a suprisingly important ally to the Z Warriors, helping them to defeat Pure Majin Boo once and for all.
Satan again takes credit for the victory, but still remains friends with the fighters and the good Boo, who comes to live with him.
Satan is the strongest "normal" human of the series, and has an incredible luck, since he not only survives all the dangers he goes through, but also gains fame for most of the heroes' acts. Though he is extremely arrogant, cunning, a good liar and sometimes clumsy about what is going on, he still is very good-hearted, helpful and heroic when he has to be.
Dragon Ball Z
Mr. Satan first appears during the Cell Games as a preening challenger of Cell. According to his backstory, once Goku and his companions stop attending the World Martial Arts Tournament, he starts winning the annual World Martial Arts Tournaments and becomes the reigning champion for many years. Mr. Satan attempts to fight Cell but is swatted away in one hit. In spite of this, he is given credit for Cell's death by the media and celebrated as a hero.
Years later, he is revealed to be the father of Videl, the would-be love interest of Gohan, and is still revered throughout the world of Dragon Ball as a hero. He later encounters and befriends Majin Buu: after convincing him of the error of his murderous ways, the benevolent influence within Buu moves the creature to reform, leading him to expel his evil tendencies which become a different lifeform altogether. This aspect of Buu is identical in appearance to his chubby progenitor, although any malevolent behavioral traits previously displayed are gone. He is also much weaker in power, and lacks some of the original Majin Buu's unique capabilities.
As one of the few survivors of the evil Buu's destructive rampage which culminated in the destruction of Earth, Mr. Satan escapes to the Supreme Kai's sacred realm along with Goku and his remaining associates. When Goku is on the verge of losing the final fight against Buu's evil incarnation, Mr. Satan rallies the people of Earth to turn the tide in Goku's favor by directing them to contribute their energy to Goku's Genki-Dama, an energy sphere attack created by gathering energy from surrounding animals, nature and humans. Following the demise of the evil Buu by Goku, his benevolent counterpart moves in with Mr. Satan and his pet labrador retriever Bee, and goes by Mr. Buu.
Dragon Ball Super
Mr. Satan again appears as a supporting character in Dragon Ball Super, where he is often seen in the company of Mr. Buu. Mr. Satan essentially serves as the caretaker of his friend as Buu has a childlike personality. He is depicted as having grown immensely wealthy due to the monetary rewards he received from his false claims of successfully defending Earth from multiple external threats. In one episode of the anime version, Mr. Satan enacts an imaginary fight with Beerus, the God of Destruction, in a televised retelling of the series' in-universe events where he embellishes himself with the ability to power up as a Super Saiyan.
Dragon Ball GT
Mr. Satan makes minor appearances in the Dragon Ball GT anime series, where he is protected from the extraterrestrial villain Baby's influence by Majin Buu and later his successor, Uub.
Abilities
Although very weak when compared to Goku and the others, Mr. Satan is a skilled martial artist whose strength exceeds that of regular people. His strength is much greater than that of "normal" humans like the evil gunmen Van Zant and Smitty, and it is higher than that of a martial artist like Spopovich (before Babidi increases his power). Mr. Satan also seemingly has extraordinary levels of strength and speed, demonstrated when he moves so fast he vanishes from sight making it appears like he is teleporting (to Van Zant - an ordinary human), pulls four buses single-handedly and punches a hole in one (in the anime), tearing multiple phone books in half, and crushes fourteen tiles simultaneously with a chop. In his match against Spopovich in the 24th World Tournament (only in the anime), he displays the ability to leap very high into the air and land with no apparent damage or difficulty, and effortlessly sends Spopovich, who is much larger and more muscular than him, flying with a single kick. Mr. Satan also survived a fight with Mercenary Tao (albeit with extreme injury) while training at Satan Castle (surviving a battle with Tao which resulted in the death of his martial teacher), something not even the likes of General Blue or Bora were capable of. However, according to Gohan, his skills are below that of his daughter Videl, who has a basic understanding of ki and flight, and takes training more seriously than he does.
He is able to survive being knocked into a mountain by Perfect Cell (although Piccolo notes that Cell did not want to expend any effort into attacking the likes of Satan), and even a light punch to the face from Kid Buu, though these instances are likely intended for comic relief. Although, part of the reward for winning the Junior Tournament, Trunks was allowed to fight Satan; being unaware that Satan's strength falls far below his own, Trunks delivered a full-powered punch that knocked Satan out of the ring into the wall, but after a minute, he recovered enough to play it off as a gimmick. In Dragon Ball GT, he also survives a kick from Omega Shenron, though again for comedic effect and, like with Cell, it's possible that Omega Shenron didn't exert any real effort into the attack.
All in all, Mr. Satan's fighting capabilities are similar to other normal Earthling martial artists seen in Dragon Ball like Nam and King Chappa who while not as strong as Goku and the Z Fighters (who, with all fairness, either have access to training a 'typical' human would generally never have or aren't human) are still stronger than normal untrained humans and possess superhuman capabilities such as superhuman strength and speed (allowing them to use techniques like Rapid Movement and the Afterimage Technique).
Heroic Acts
- He stands up to Spopovich and humiliates him with a strong kick off the stadium for harming his daughter Videl, who was sent to the hospital because Spopovich beating Videl up to a bloody pulp and nearly killing her. This made Mr. Satan humiliates Spopovich publicly as a form of retaliation.
- He honored Android 16's last request by throwing his head close enough to speak to Gohan, even when doing so put Mr. Satan at great personal risk (16 appeased to his ego a bit), this directly led to the world being saved via 16 giving Gohan a moment to face death with dignity. In a way, Mr. Satan saved the world in the Cell Games (though he took all credit for beating Cell and called the real heroes fake). Although, his selfish act of taking credit had an accidentally selfless consequence, as Gohan didn't want the attention that the triumph would have granted him; Gohan, also wanting to respect Chi-Chi's insistence on a "normal life," was thus grateful he could experience a relatively normal school life.
- In the battle with Kid Buu, he fought Buu head-on to protect his friend Fat Buu (although he stood no chance, Hercule still showed heart).
- In Dragon Ball Super, he was handed a World Peace Prize and one hundred million Zeni after doing a battle with Android 18 (who made a fair deal with her), instead of using the money for himself, he immediately offered the money to Vegeta, and then to Goku (who Goten convinces to accept). He also built Gohan and Videl a house to live in as well as fronting the bill for Gohan and Videl's marital home, and his acts of making Goku and Chi-Chi rich subsidizes Goku's ability to train (and, by extension, this allowed Goku to continue protecting Earth).
- When it was revealed that Majin Buu had killed people since he was told to murder people by Babidi, Mr. Satan was there to wisely stop Buu upon meeting him for the first time with both, bravery and pure fear. Despite Mr. Satan's failures to kill off Buu with many misdirections and attempts to claim his acts of defeating him in newspapers, he eventually changed his heart, became less insincere, and Mr. Satan got Buu to stop killing people by simply asking him not to. Ever since, both Mr. Satan and Buu became the best of friends. Mr. Satan even taught Buu how to be nice, as the two play with Satan's dog Bee.
- When Goku and Vegeta fail to telepathically convince the people of Earth to lend their energy for Goku's Spirit Bomb, Mr. Satan angrily yells out at everyone to do so with his supposed telepathic ability to share with the world and he uses his popularity to motivate everyone on planet Earth, requesting that they give "him" their power to help finish Goku's Spirit Bomb. Thanks to his popularity back on Earth, it works. When the energy wasn't enough, Mr. Satan stands up to Vegeta, who is demanding that he won't do it again, as it would risk their recently renewed lives.
- After Kid Buu's defeat, Vegeta wanted to kill Good Buu, to prevent a repeat of the calamity, however, Mr. Satan stood up for Buu, making note of his innocent heart and volunteers himself to keep him good. Goku is convinced, thus reluctantly Vegeta also agrees, thereby Mr. Satan managed to directly save a life.
Personality
During the Dragon Ball Z time period, Mr. Satan is the reigning World Martial Arts Champion, a title won fairly by beating other normal earthlings in a time when Goku and other powerful fighters were battling on Namek and later against the Androids. During the time of the Cell Games, Mr. Satan was already rich and famous, but is also a total egomaniac. He boasted endlessly on television about his strength, and that he was the "best fighter in the world". In the eyes of characters who know otherwise, he is considered to be a showboating blowhard.
Mr. Satan was opportunistic and deceitful, albeit unintentionally despite how much of an ego he has; when people believed he defeated Cell, he was confused, but then switched gears to reinforce their wrong assumptions. He also has a tendency to believe his own hype, such as referring to the Z Fighters as "Those guys that were there when I beat Cell," even though he was talking to himself, and no one was nearby for him to maintain the charade with. Likewise, in movie Bojack Unbound, Mr. Satan was able to take credit for a global threat being beaten. He's been known to become cocky about facing the likes of Cell and Majin Buu before remembering that he can't actually beat them. His self-delusion eventually becomes clear that it isn't simply his ego, but rather a sense of shame, which he avoids by pretending he is the hero he wasn't, also has an odd sense of obligation to act like the champion his fans believe he is in reality.
Other than his existing lie about defeating Cell, Mr. Satan's cowardice would drive him into compulsive lies, thinking of random and flimsy excuses as why his reason to not wanting to fight is not out of self-preservation or insecurity. Distractions from battles will cause him to forget he was meant to be in pain or sick, so breaks the charade; however, when someone notices, he falls back into pretending to have some ailment that is preventing him to fight - often, some some people begin to see through the lie, understanding his cowardly and sneaky nature, but eventually there would be some random lucky event that will make them become completely deceived again.
Mr. Satan can, despite his first-hand witnessing of superpowers and having lots of pride in himself, be exceptionally naive about the real dangers of a superpowered being. When first approaching Majin Buu, his cowardly nature made him feign friendship, before utilizing guns and then bombs, believing that "nothing could survive it," only to be stunned that Buu was unharmed. Despite his ignorance, Mr. Satan also manages to be quite perceptive, as during his false friendship with Buu, he realized that Buu wasn't actually evil, but exceptionally ignorant, having been directed by Babidi, not understanding that killing innocent people was wrong, thus is able to be convinced into stopping his rampage. The deception became a real friendship, showing that Mr. Satan was capable of forgiveness and overcoming his immediate fear of something different.
Mr. Satan would frequently be absent from home, whether it be for promotional jobs, or martial arts work, however, he was still a caring father for Videl. Despite his boasts of heroism being based on lies, he was able to inspire Videl into holding a strong sense of justice, so unintentionally encouraging her to improve her own martial arts prowess and fight crime, which ultimately lead her into meeting Gohan. Ultimately, they would marry and have a child, Pan; Mr. Satan was highly doting on his granddaughter.
Mr. Satan's influence on Majin Buu was so great that he became good, then even when Good Buu was absorbed into Evil Buu, becoming Super Buu, the Good Buu was able to prevent the predominantly evil entity from hurting his friend. Even when Super Buu launched his Human Extinction Attack from the Lookout, Good Buu was enough of a subconscious influence that Mr. Satan and the puppy Bee, remained unharmed, being the only survivors left on Earth - barring Tien and Chiaotzu who were able to dodge the beam attacks. Good Buu still remained an influence so that even the entirely psychotic and pure evil Kid Buu was prevented from hurting Mr. Satan, with Kid Buu driven to forcibly extract Good Buu.
However, despite his negative traits such as his greed, cowardice, incompetent moments, being a skirt-chasing womanizer and once showing a shocking lack of common sense on occasions with facing enemies that can outrank him and believed that he can take them down in a loudmouthed and pompous way, Mr. Satan still proves to be a fundamentally decent, sensitive and kind-hearted human being who wants to make the world a better place and has managed to subvert his clueless/idiotic moments. Even though he seemed shameless for his years of egotism as well as parading his lies about defeating Cell, Mr. Satan did feel remorse for his deception, and only continued it out of no knowing what else to do and tried justifying his deception by noting it made people feel happy and safe as his intentions even though he has trouble telling the truth; that said, he did often become intoxicated by fame. During the final fight against Kid Buu, all Earthlings had already given all of their energy for the Spirit Bomb; while more power could have been gathered by harnessing their lifeforces, it would have caused their deaths, which Mr. Satan was unwilling to ask of them, due to factors of not wanting them to die out of both the moral issues and so that he could honor them for their years of loving him.
It's best to not let his buffoonish personality fool people into thinking he's not smart at all, as he is shown to be more intelligent than he seems. While not always clever, he still does show to have good intellect and a sense of resourcefulness since he was the only one to figure out that the Z-Senhi's powers were real and a serious problem when the general public still thought they were just tricks and lies, and in the Kid Buu Saga; he even proves himself to be vital as a driving force in the final battle against Kid Buu, where he thinks to use his popularity and charismatic reputation to successfully convince the public into helping Goku defeat Kid Buu by motivating and encouraging all of planet Earth to give all of their power and/or resources for Goku's Spirit Bomb he needed to utilize in order to defeat Kid Buu, which helped saving the world. This was shown to be a courageous, well thought out act that actually works in the heroes' favor, since he was able to cover for the Z-Warriors from discovering the supernatural by claiming responsibility for acts of world-saving or alternately garnering public support for Goku or Vegeta or even Krillin, whom were all unknown for the time and the world has never heard of them before until Satan mentioned them as heroes, and the world has only have heard of Mr. Satan, and since it's shown that the public will follow his orders without question, Satan used this fact to his advantage and do something strategic and helpful with that alone.
In regards to Majin Buu in Dragon Ball Super, Satan will call Buu out when he's starting to go overboard and has ways to distract him if the situation needs it. He genuinely cares about protecting the innocent and fighting for justice to the best of his abilities and is prone to violent and righteous anger when faced with the abuse of helpless innocents by villains. He shows moments of great courage when his family and friends are threatened by evil. Even though Buu's evil karma had been purged into Kid Buu, then destroyed to be reborn with good karma, Mr. Satan still advised Buu to keep his temper, since even though he was good, his childlike nature combined with immense powers would be disastrous when angered.

- Mr. Satan could pull three tour busses, punch through one and tear two phone books in half; which proved his great strength by human standards.
- It must be noted that Mr. Satan is the only character in Dragon Ball history to fight Cell and Evil Buu without dying despite being a regular human.
- In the GT timeline, Mr. Satan gave up the mantle of World Martial Arts Champion the year after Majuub gave him the win. The public excuse he gave for retiring was that he held onto the title too long and that it was time to let the younger generation succeed him.
- Regardless, 100 years after GT he was immortalized at the World Martial Arts Stadium with a statue alongside one of Goku; both recognized as heroes of Earth.
- Due to the religious implications of his name, the character was renamed as Hercule in North America to avoid problems with the Christian community.
- This was reversed with Super as Dragon Ball had gotten so popular everyone stopped caring; everyone could find out the real name with the internet by this point.
- His real name is Mark (a pun on akuma, the Japanese word for "devil"), as stated by Akira Toriyama in a interview, additionally, according to Toriyama, he is from a cultural region in which surnames are not used, therefore, that is his full name as well.
- Mr. Satan himself is based on the martial arts blowhard Count Dante.
- He shares some similarities to Master Roshi, since they both are revealed to be wise and heroic martial artists with some lecherous traits, the only difference is that Mr. Satan is apparently much more successful with scoring women than Roshi does, mainly due to Mr. Satan's fame and wealth as the self-proclaimed "world champion".
- He is the only Earthling character to never die throughout Dragon Ball Z despite having no superpowers (Bee survives too, though a puppy may not count as a fully developed character).
- He continued this record throughout GT.
- In the continuity of Super, he finally died when Frieza blew up the Earth; yet he was revived with everyone else, but since it was with Whis' time do-over, there is a case to argue he still never technically died.
