~ Trunk when seeing Goku alive in Super. |
Trunks, known as Future Trunks, is a major character in the Dragon Ball franchise.
Well-mannered, serious and very cautious, Trunks hails from an alternate timeline in which Android 17 and Android 18 murdered the Z-Fighters and proceeded to create apocalyptic hell on Earth.
Trunks is trained by Future Gohan as a teenager and becomes a gifted fighter, swordsman and a Super Saiyan; traits that aid him greatly in the battle against the Androids after traveling back in time in order to save his own future. He makes his return in Dragon Ball Super to warn the Z Fighters about Goku Black and Zamasu.
He is voiced by Takeshi Kusao in the Japanese version of the anime, and by Eric Vale in the English version of the anime.

Personality
Future Trunks is very serious and cautious due to the world he grew up in and having not grown up with his father, as well as polite and good-mannered. He usually thinks certain things matter and others don’t due to being from the future (though he is usually right). However, Trunks is surprised on a deep level when things happen differently from his timeline. He has demonstrated some cockiness, though only rarely, and in combat, he is usually serious and determined.
In Super, Trunks' PTSD resurfaced when the mysterious entity Goku Black appeared and causes so much destruction (to the point that he had a hard time being comfortable while in the present), he eventually feels better after seeing Gohan and his family. During his training with Vegeta in the past, Trunks only reason for wanting to become strong was to defeat the current threat that plagued his timeline, however after listening to his father's words, Trunks resolves to become strong and consistent in order to defeat and surpass Goku Black.
Future Trunks was usually even tempered, but could be driven to great Saiyan levels of rage, notably when he finally vanquished the evil Future 17 & 18, as well as a variant of Cell. The most rage he expressed was at Goku Black; after recovering from one doomsday, he was enraged that another was unleashed upon his world. However, he momentarily felt self-loathing when Goku Black revealed he was "inspired" by the hybrid-Saiyan's use of time travel to exploit his own temporal scheme; Black rejected responsibility for his mass murders, stating that Future Trunks should blame himself instead. While Future Trunks did feel ashamed and guilty, he had strong enough will to eventually realise Goku Black's hypocrisy and slaughter wasn't Future Trunks' fault, hence contributing to his later fury against the evil kai.
As his mentor was the late Future Gohan, he felt a particular attachment to the Present Day version, hoping to aid him to repay the guidance and protection that his alternate future self gave the time traveler. Upon his return to the present, when Gohan had now grown up, and thus was identical to his deceased brother figure (barring the facial scar and missing arm), Future Trunks was excited to see how far he had progressed. However, upon learning that Gohan had in fact become significantly weaker than when he defeated Cell as a young teenager, he was disappointed. Despite this disillusionment, he eventually witnessed how that Gohan was now married to Videl and had a daughter, Pan, therefore had a happy, fulfilled life; this revelation allowed Future Trunks to be content that his efforts to save the world had in fact succeeded in this timeline, as well as inspiring him to keep working hard to save his own future era so that others could similarly achieve peaceful and happy lives.
His closest friend was Future Mai, which had romantic undertones; he appeared generally unaware of the love angle, but when teased, he'd become bashful, indicating some level of awareness. Regardless of romance, she was one of the reasons that he found the strength to keep fighting Goku Black and Zamasu, despite being continuously outmatched. Due to Future Mai, he was able to accept becoming refugees in a timeline like theirs but not, even knowing everyone else they lost was gone forever.
Future Trunks always suffered from survivor's guilt, which was made tragically worse, as after Zamasu's soul permeates his timeline, killing everyone native to the era except him and Future Mai, and the seemingly only solution was for Goku to summon Future Zeno; the childish deity was disgusted by Zamasu's malice, thus erased him, but also the entire reality, meaning that everyone who died couldn't be restored. Future Trunks took solace in the fact he wasn't alone with Future Mai, plus trying to take in the lessons about hope and strength from Goku and Vegita.
Appearance
He is considered to be a handsome young man, as he inherited the strong features of Vegeta, yet softened by the beauty of Bulma.
In his debut and time throughout Dragon Ball Z his hair was light violet, but in his reappearance in Dragon Ball Super his hair was blue-to-turquoise. Although, upon turning any Super Saiyan state, it would become the expected golden-yellow or light yellow.
His most common attire is a steel blue jacket with the Capsule Corp logo (original jacket was midriff exposing, whereas his subsequent one covered down to his waist), black shirt, black pants, and brown-green combat boots. As an adult, he typically wore a red scarf/cravat, similar to his mother Bulma's style. He always wore his sword in its scabbard on his back, connected by a belt over his torso.
Powers

Trunks has demonstrated a high level of power despite being young and possesses superhuman strength, speed, endurance, and durability. He can manipulate energy in the form of energy blasts and flight and

has demonstrated skills in swordsmanship (from his training by Future Gohan). Trunks also has a number of techniques that he uses, such as the Burning Attack, where he performs a number of rapid arm movements. He then holds his hands out in front of him with his index fingers and thumbs forming a diamond shape and fires a powerful blast of energy from his hands. Another is the Finish Buster, where Trunks holds his hands up above him, charging a golden energy

sphere above him, before bringing his hands forward, firing an energy beam from it. Another of Trunks’ techniques is his Heat Dome Attack, where he holds his hands above him as a dome of energy surrounds him. He then fires an enormous energy blast from the dome up above him. Another technique Trunks uses is his Buster Cannon, where he draws his hands behind him, charging an energy sphere in each one. He then brings them together in front of him, firing a powerful blue and white energy beam. Trunks has the ability to transform into a Super Saiyan form, where he becomes far more powerful to the point he could kill

Frieza and King Cold with apparently no effort. Later on, Trunks advanced to the Ascended Super Saiyan form, an advanced version of the Super Saiyan transformation.

This gives him a much greater deal of strength and power than in the normal Super Saiyan form. Trunks also gained the ability to use the Ultra Super Saiyan form, another version of the Super Saiyan form and a forced increase in the power output and physical strength. However the increased muscle mass of the Ultra Super Saiyan transformation results in a great decrease in speed, so the form causes more harm than good even Goku and Vegeta figured out this forms' weakness.

After training in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber and later returning to his time, he was more than strong enough to handle Future 17 and 18. He was also able to easily destroy Imperfect Cell. In Dragon Ball Super, Trunks has become much stronger, having achieved Super Saiyan 2 in his absence. He unlocked this form in a battle against Future Dabura and Future Babidi and can enhance its strength to rival Super Saiyan 3 Goku's power in the manga. In the anime

his power was somewhat below Super Saiyan 2 Goku's until training with Vegeta. After training in the past and returning to the future, He (along with Goku were able to hold their own against Goku Black and Future Zamasu. Trunks takes a new form after being cruelly blamed for using the Time Machine and changing history, with Super Saiyan Rage granting him enough power to help him to fend off Black and Zamasu while the others jumped into the past.
During the final battle against a mutated merged Zamasu, Trunks (with the energy that he received from everyone on Earth) was finally able to defeat Zamasu. By the time he goes back into the future one final time, both Goku and Vegeta are confident that Trunks is strong enough to handle any enemy.
