And now time resumes!

There's no defense against a fist of love. I heard you've been acting pretty recklessly, Luffy.
~ Garp to Luffy after punching the latter as a family reunion.
Big Mom and Kaido?! It's just one thing after another...
~ Garp expressed his annoyance about Big Mom and Kaido's alliance.
Hey, Kuzan! You'd better unfreeze Hibari... let us take Koby... and get your ass back in uniform!
~ Garp to Kuzan attempting to convince him to rejoin the Marines.
You want to become a scumbag?
~ Garp to Stelly of wanting to become a Celestial Dragons, revealing he is not loyal to the World Nobles.

Monkey D. Garp is a supporting character in the One Piece franchise. He is a Marine vice admiral that fought Gol D. Roger many times during the Golden Pirates Era and is regarded by many to be the Hero of the Marines. He is also the father of the Revolutionary leader Monkey D. Dragon, the paternal grandfather of Monkey D. Luffy and the adoptive grandfather of Portgas D. Ace. He is also the mentor of Koby, Helmepoo and Kuzan.

40 years ago, Garp teamed up with Roger to defeat the notorious Rocks D. Xebec and his crew. He often was offered to become an Admiral only for him to reject the offer countless times because Admirals are considered to be the Celestial Dragons' direct subordinates and Garp (much like both his son and grandson) holds hatred towards them as he called them "scumbags".

Following the events of Marineford War and Ace's death, he semi-retired from his vice admiral duties and became a Marine Instructor, taking on new recruits in the new generation.

During the assault on Hachinosu of rescuing his disciple Koby, Garp was captured by the Blackbeard Pirates, leaving his status unknown and declared MIA to the Marines. Garp is alive but imprisoned. Even though losing Koby, Blackbeard intend to use Garp as a supreme bargaining chip to negotiate with the World Government due to his reputation is even greater than his student, Koby.

Due to Cross Guild, Garp has a 3 crowns bounty worth 3.000,000,000 which stated to compare Cross Guild's bounty for Admirals.

He is voiced by Hiroshi Naka in the Japanese version of the anime, and by Brian Mathis in the English version of the anime. He will be portrayed by Vincent Regan in the live action version.

Personality

Garp is an eccentric but righteous man, loyal to his status as a Marine and his criminal family. He is loud, boisterous, exuberant, and overall acts like his grandson (as noted by Kuzan, most of the Straw Hats, and Jaygarcia Saturn), however he can be serious when it is required. A good example is when he and Sengoku faced Shiki.

Despite his righteous attitude, Garp is well aware of the hypocrisy and great atrocities committed by the World Government and the Marines. In spite of his acknowledgment of the corruption of his occupation, he desired for his whole family to follow in his footsteps. However, he was upset by his son deserting the marines for those reasons and his grandsons both stating a desire to be pirates, leading him to punch a ship and beat them up respectively.

There are several things that separate him from other Marines that have appeared. For instance, he does not believe a person's lineage determines their path and that a child should inherit their parents' sins just for existing. Secondly, Garp believes that just because a person is labeled a criminal doesn't mean that they are evil, as seen with his views of Roger and Dadan. Lastly, Garp has shown that he had no goals of getting a promotion and is comfortable with his rank, as he repeatedly refused to be an Admiral. However, the latter could be because he doesn't intend to serve the World Nobles.

Similar to most bearers of D., he showed no fear of death as when he believed he was going to die, he simply laughed hysterically after being wounded whilst being frozen and surrounded by Kuzan and the Blackbeard Pirates.

Relationships

Family

Monkey D. Dragon

Dragon is Garp's son. No direct interaction has been seen between father and son. It is unknown what their relationship was like in the past but it appears they were close, as Dragon followed in his father's footsteps to be a Marine before he deserted. An earlier flashback reveals that Garp was very enraged by his own son resigning and becoming a Revolutionary, who was wanted by the World Government, going so far as to furiously punch a ship repeatedly.

Over time, Garp became casual towards his son's occupation, telling Luffy about Dragon's criminal status, while going so far as to pick his nose as he revealed this and express mild surprise Dragon didn't introduce himself. He even laughed when he realized he should not be telling people that kind of information. There appears to be some sort of understanding between the two, as Garp stated that the reason why Dragon was in Loguetown was to see Luffy set off for the Grand Line but Dragon ended up rescuing Luffy against Smoker's Kairoseki Jutte. It is unknown what views Dragon has of his father but the fact that he entrusted his own son in the care of Garp, means he trusted him to some extent. When their connection was revealed to the world, Garp wasn't worried and his status as hero hasn't been tarnished either.

Both Garp and Dragon have different ideologies, as Garp remained in the Marines and believed the East Blue to be a peaceful place. Meanwhile, Dragon abandoned the Marines because of the corruption and injustice in areas in the East Blue such as Goa Kingdom and Tequila Wolf.

Father and son do have a common ground of hating the Celestial Dragons for their cruelty and atrocities towards humanity.

Monkey D. Luffy

Luffy is Garp's grandson. He raised him, since he was a child and intended to have him follow in his footsteps as a Marine. However, Luffy always yearned for piracy, something Garp claimed was a result of Shanks poisoning his mind but Luffy had declared he always voiced his desire even before.

To that end, he subsequently trained him constantly by putting him in dangerous situations such as throwing him in a ravine, leaving him alone in the jungle, tying him to a bunch of balloons to send him flying, and hitting him when he voiced a desire to be a pirate. As a result, Luffy has gained an incredible fear of him, in contrast to his carefree nature. Regardless, Luffy loves his grandfather and vice versa. He appeared in Water 7 to see Luffy, with the latter ordering his crew to stay away from Garp. Luffy was ignorant of Garp's reputation until his crew told him that Garp fought the Pirate King, something that left him shocked but he shrugged it off and still saw Garp as his grandfather.

In spite of his disapproval of Luffy's choice, Garp is shown to be incredibly proud of his grandson because of all the trouble Luffy has been causing for the World Government such as Ennies Lobby, Saobody, and Impel Down. He express dismay at Luffy entering Marineford, though calmed himself after acknowledging this and Sengoku's revelation of Luffy's heritage means he is an infamous outlaw. He was not too surprised to discover Luffy possesses Supreme King Haki, remarking he inherited after all. Garp later intervened on Luffy's attempt to save Ace, stating he would fulfill his duties as a Marine by stopping a pleading Luffy. In the end, his love for his family prevailed and he allowed Luffy to strike him.

Garp and Luffy are exactly alike despite their differences: they eat too much, sleep at random, go on reckless adventures, and both hate the Celestial Dragons for their cruelty and injustice towards humanity (as Garp called the World Nobles as "scumbags").

Portgas D. Ace

Ace is Garp's adoptive grandson. Garp adopted Ace after Roger entrusted his care to him, but he initially found the idea ridiculous. However, he took him in and raised Ace, since he was an infant and saw him as family. Garp intended to have him follow in his footsteps as a Marine. When discovering Ace became a pirate, he was beyond angry. In spite of his disapproval of Ace's choice, Garp is shown to be incredibly proud of his grandson because of how strong he became.

While Ace only wanted to see Garp as a relative, Garp was insistent they were family. At his execution, Garp broke down in tears at Ace's fate, cursing that he chose piracy. It was shown Ace loved Garp for his acceptance of him, though he despised Garp's abusive treatment, refused to be a Marine, and stated his bloodline, along with Luffy's made such a notion impossible. After witnessing Akainu punch through Ace, Garp tried to kill the latter in revenge but Sengoku stopped him. In his final moments, Ace thanked Garp and everyone else for loving him. Garp even broke down at his grandson's death.

Students

Koby

Koby is one of Garp's disciples along with Helmepoo. Garp first decided to train him after the situation with Morgans. After brutally training him, this allowed Koby to gain the strength need to fulfill his goal of being a real marine, as the latter rose up the ranks. They became close enough for Garp to reveal his connection to his grandson Luffy, though Koby was later shocked to hear Dragon was Garp's son. Garp declared that Koby is the future of the Marines. He was greatly shocked by Koby speaking up at the battle of Marineford. After Koby was captured by the Blackbeard Pirates from a failure attempted to arrest Boa Hancock, Garp went to Hachinosu to rescue Koby but he allowed himself to be captured.

Helmeppo

Helmeppo is one of Garp's disciples along with Koby. Garp first decided to train him after the situation with Helmeppo's father Morgans. After brutally training him, this allowed Helmeppo to gain the strength of being a real marine, as the latter rose up the ranks. They became close enough for Garp to reveal his connection to his grandson Luffy, though Helmeppo was shocked to hear Dragon was Garp's son, calling his family crazy. Regardless, he is grateful for tutelage though wants to pay him back.

Kuzan

Ex-Admiral Kuzan (formerly known as Aokiji) is Garp's former apprentice. He met Kuzan when he was a kid, as the latter ask Garp to train him although he rejected but soon accepted. Over the years, the two have become friends and Kuzan was impressed by Garp turning down promotions and made time to hang out, even after outranking him. Garp left an impression on Kuzan, as he remarked that Luffy reminded him so much of him in their first meeting.

In Hachinosu, Garp confronted Kuzan and demanded his former disciple to "get his ass back in uniform", but he refused due to Sakazuki. Kuzan captured Garp after Koby got away. Kuzan revealed he did attempt to kill Garp but he survived.

Others

Sakazuki

Sakazuki doesn't show Garp admiration, despite the latter's years of service and reputation as "Hero of the Marines". This likely stems from Garp sharing a bloodline to criminals Dragon and Luffy, who Sakazuki hold in great hatred. In return, Garp holds him in disdain for killing his adoptive grandson Ace and would've killed him had he not been stopped by Sengoku. After the timeskip, Garp still remains in the Marines but doesn't consider Sakazuki as anything, despite his promotion.

World Nobles

Though he is a proud Marine and loyal of the World Government, Garp is revealed to hate the Celestial Dragons for their cruelty and atrocities towards humanity. In a flashback that took place thirty years ago, Garp was alerted by Kong for aiding the World Nobles because of the Rocks Pirates but he refused to help and thought the God's Knights could protect, he also made it clear that he was against helping them because he was on vacation. However, its revealed that he knew they were hunting people on God Valley and believed the World Nobles deserved it from stealing from pirates, though he helped after hearing Roger was on the Island too. Over the years, Garp has refused to be promoted to Admiral, as that would make him a personal servant to them. Like his family and other D-bearers, he has come to hold them in disdain by calling the scumbags in public, despite the risks in doing so. The World Nobles are aware of his defiance but are unable to dispose of him, due to his reputation.

History

Past

Before the Great Age of Pirates

Monkey D. Garp was born in the Goa Kingdom in the East Blue. He became a Marine at the age of 22 along with Sengoku and Tsuru. A year later, Garp started a family with an unknown woman and had a son named Dragon. Over the years, Garp continued to rise through the ranks as a marine becoming a vice admiral.

At one point, Kuzan approached Garp for training sessions, though he tried to get the latter to buzz off, he soon found himself training the young rookie.

38 years ago he gained the title of a marine hero after the God valley incident where he joined forces with Gol D. Roger to defeat Rocks D. Xebec. He would become even more famous for cornering and fighting the late Pirate King, Gol D. Roger numerous times in his career. Garp is considered by Whitebeard as one of the few people that know the seas from the time of Gold Roger. A proof of his strength is that he was offered an admiral position many times from Fleet Admiral Kong, but he refused every time. The reason for this being that, Admirals are the direct subordinates of the Celestial Dragons (whom Garp called them to be scumbags).

As part of his duty, in the past he chased other pirates like the previous Empress of Amazon Lily, Shakuyaku, while nearly killing Chinjao after denting his head.

Prior to Roger's execution, the Pirate King requested that Garp would take care of his newborn son Portgas D. Ace, as he thought Ace did not deserve to be branded a criminal due to being born into a family of a pirate.

When Shiki the Gold Lion attacked Marineford a week before the execution of Roger, Garp and Sengoku challenged him together. After a grueling battle that devastated half the town, they managed to defeat him, and (according to a marine) Garp was left heavily injured. A number of months after the Pirate King's death, Garp protected Ace as Roger had hoped, and was present at Ace's birth that killed Rouge and afterward took Ace to a secret location to be raised by Dadan. Garp would visit Ace during his vacations and would try to convince Ace to become a Marine. 19 years prior to the current Storyline, Garp became a grandfather to a newly born Monkey D. Luffy after his son Dragon left him in his care. Like with Ace, Garp would take Luffy to live with Dadan and occasionally train him to a become a marine.

During one of his training sessions with Kuzan, Garp voiced his rage at his own son becoming a Revolutionary, surprising Kuzan. At another point, he complained how his grandson voiced his desire to be a pirate.

Water 7 Saga

Post-Enies Lobby Arc

Garp arrived at Water 7, surprising everyone that a famous marine like him was present. Garp easily tracked the Straw Hat Pirates to the Galley-la house they were staying at and was accompanied by his crew. He had his men step back, as he casually punched the wall down, alerting all occupants inside. He asked if they were the Straw Hat Pirates and that he had people who wanted to speak with their Captain, as the pirates prepared for a fight while Garp noticed a sleeping Luffy. He commented on how the latter never learns before bypassing the group and easily making it to Luffy. He told him to wake up, before punching the latter in the head, while waking him up. To everyone's surprise, Luffy screamed in pain and Garp told them nobody could escape his "Fist of Love". He took his mask off and told Luffy, he heard about his activities lately and casually called him by his name. Luffy was shocked, as he identified Garp as his grandfather, much to the shock of his crew and everyone else gathered.

He was identified by Nami as the famous hero, who fought the Pirate King years ago, to everyone's shock. Luffy ordered his crew not to touch him, as he reveals Garp nearly killed him on occasion when he was a child. Garp snapped at Luffy for making sound like a bad guy, though does acknowledge his list of harsh training methods on him and how they were designed to make him a man. Hearing this, Sanji understood where Luffy gets all his strength and endurance from. He reveals he left Luffy and Ace in the care of his friend to make them into Marines but he voiced disappointment they turn to piracy and Luffy defends himself by voicing how he always told him that he wanted to be a pirate. Garp blamed Shanks but Luffy defends his idol, leading to Garp grabbing him. However, both fell asleep and when waking up, Garp beat up his sleeping grandson, despite his own actions being pointed out. Garp then told Luffy about Shanks being one of the Four Emperors, while describing the Three Great Powers.

Afterwards, he ordered his men to fix the wall, leading them to protest that it was fault. They agree to do it, but only if Garp helps in the repairs, to his shock but he agrees. While fixing the wall, Garp asked Luffy if it's true he met his father, but Luffy states he didn't think he had one. Garp expresses surprise that the latter didn't introduce himself in Loguetown. When Luffy asked Garp about his father, he revealed Luffy's father was actually Monkey D. Dragon, the Revolutionary. The reactions of those present was of dire shock, as nobody had known anything about Dragon, that he had a child, not even that he was Garp's son, and his full name.

Robin then tells Luffy just why his father is so feared. Garp notices all the surprised faces around him and laughs at telling people such news and simply ask they forget it, to their further shock.

Summit War Saga

Impel Down

Garp paid a visit to the detained Ace in Impel Down, with the pair reflecting on Luffy and the rest of the family. This came before Ace was to be taken to Marineford for his public execution, which Garp would be attending with the rest of the Marine Admiralty, including Admirals Akainu, Aokiji, Kizuna, and Fleet Admiral Sengoku himself, along with members of the Shichibukai, the Seven Warlords of the Sea.

Marineford War

Garp initially stood back with Sengoku to watch the battle between Whitebeard, his crew, and all his pirate allies, against the Shichibukai, Marines, and the Admirals, even at one point taking a moment to talk to Ace again before withdrawing as the swordsmen took up their positions to execute Ace.

When Marco attempted to fly to the scaffold, Garp intercepted him and sent him crashing into the ground with a mighty punch. He told Whitebeard and his crew that to carry out their plan, they'd have to get past him, joining the fight due to his duty as a Marine Vice Admiral to ensure Ace's execution went as planned, even if he did not agree with it.

When Luffy invaded the battle of Marineford, Sengoku yelled at Garp that his family was causing trouble again, but Garp was too dumbfounded that his grandson fell from the sky to respond to Sengoku. He soon regained his wits to express ire at Luffy making it to the battlefield.

After Sengoku made Luffy's connection to Dragon known, Garp resigned himself to the fact that Luffy's reputation as an outlaw made such news irrelevant and called both brothers a pair of fools.

When Luffy unleashed a burst of Supreme King Haki, Garp was not too surprised and commented he inherited it after all. Nevertheless, when Luffy tries to get to Ace, Garp intercepts him, telling his grandson he would have to go through him to reach Ace to save him. As grandson and grandfather charged each other, at the last second, Garp hesitated, his love for Luffy winning out, and Luffy K.O.'ed his grandfather. Even when Sengoku personally joined the fight to stop Luffy himself, Ace was freed and joined the fight, before Whitebeard ordered everyone to retreat with Ace rescued while he stayed behind to serve as rear guard, knowing he had not much longer to live.

Unfortunately, thanks to Admiral Akainu, Ace was mortally wounded and dying in Luffy's arms after the wicked Admiral angered Ace by insulting Whitebeard and his crew, which Ace took personal offense to. Enraged by Ace's murder by Akainu, Garp attempted to retaliate and made it a beeline towards the Admiral, as other Marines notices but Garp was immediately restrained by Sengoku, with Garp telling his friend/superior he'd better keep him pinned down if he doesn't want to see what he intends to do to Akainu in revenge. After Ace's death, Garp breaks down in tears for his grandson. However, Marshall D. Teach, AKA Blackbeard, arrives and finishes off Whitebeard with his newly strengthen crew, but in his last breaths, Whitebeard declares to all that One Piece, Gol D. Roger's legendary treasure, does exist, before expiring, and Blackbeard then doing a ritual that allows him to gain possession of Whitebeard's Devil Fruit powers to use in conjunction with his own.

When Blackbeard threatens to sink Marineford, Garp and Sengoku immediately leap to the defense of their home base and threaten to fight Blackbeard themselves, but are stopped by Koby when he demands that everyone stop fighting since Whitebeard and Ace are dead and there's no need for further blood to be spilled. Garp was surprised by his pupil's act and watches as Akainu prepares to kill Koby for insubordination, but is stopped by Shanks, who threatens to have everyone there face his Red-Hair Pirates unless they agree to a unilateral ceasefire. Garp expressed his resentment for the pirate who inspired Luffy. Since their objective is already completed, Sengoku ended the war and ordered their surviving Marines to stand down, collect their dead, and treat their wounded, while Blackbeard escapes with his crew and Whitebeard's Devil Fruit powers.

Post-War Arc

Weeks after the war, it is revealed that Garp attempted to resign from the Marines but Kong was able to talk him into accepting a position as an instructor while keeping his rank. It is also revealed Garp's familial relations with Luffy and Dragon were made known to the whole world but Garp's reputation had not been tarnished from criminal connections.

Garp later returned to Foosha Village, where his crew dealt with attacks from ongoing pirates. Makino greeted him, before Dadan emerged from the bar and viciously beat on Garp who had his crew stay away while this happened because he knew her. Dadan berated Garp for not protecting Ace and continued to attack him, stating he had no right to hold his title. Eventually, Makino stopped her.

Levely Arc

he escorted the mermaid princess Shirahoshi and her family to the Levelly, and had some nice conversations with her regarding Luffy, whom Shirahoshi had met herself. After the Levely, Garp escorted Shirahoshi and her family back to their home to keep the mermaid princess from Saint Charloss.

After Koby was captured by the Blackbeard Pirates from a failure attempted to arrest Boa Hancock, Garp went on a mission with SWORD to rescue Koby at Hachinosu. Garp used his advanced Haki. While Koby and Hibari are reaching his ship, Garp is soon confronted by ex-Marine Admiral, Kuzan. Garp demanded his former disciple to come back to the Marines, but refused due to his hatred towards Sakazuki. Garp was soon clashing 5 of the Ten Titanic Captains. He was defeated and captured by the Blackbeard Pirates, declaring his status MIA but allowing his troops and SWORD to escaped. Garp is alive but was imprisoned for Blackbeard's schemes by using Garp as a supreme bargaining chip to negotiate with the World Government.

Abilities and Powers

As a Vice Admiral of the Marine Headquarters, Garp has command over all lower ranking soldiers. An example of this is when after Morgan escaped, he was able to take away two of Ripper's subordinates (Koby and Helmeppo) and make them his own subordinates instead due to him having the higher rank. Also as a Vice Admiral, he had the potential to be called upon to be one of five vice admirals leading a fleet of ten battleships during a Buster Call.

Despite having no Devil Fruit power, Garp is one of the most powerful fighters seen in the series so far. Although rather old, Garp still possesses an incredibly high amount of physical strength. He is able to throw iron cannonballs as if they were baseballs (at faster than cannon speeds), break through brick walls and cannon stands with his fists, and both carry and throw a gigantic ball and chain many times bigger than the Thousand Sunny. Garp also has a monstrous punching ability at his disposal, with his epithet, "Garp the Fist," vouching for his punch strength. His unorthodox training regime was what enabled his grandsons Luffy and Ace to become very powerful fighters in their own right. Further showing his true depth as an instructor was that he made Koby and Helmeppo into seasoned fighters in months. Former Admiral Kuzan, now tenth Captain of the Blackbeard Pirates, achieved his ranks from his training under Garp. According to Woop Slap and Blackbeard, Garp cannot be easily killed.

In terms of combat, Garp has had several decades worth of experience in both combat and navigating the harshest oceans within the volatile "New World". He's also a "hero" of the Marines and as is known for cornering and fighting Gol D. Roger many times. Roger also stated that he and Garp had almost killed each other on numerous occasions. As another true testament of sheer power, Garp defeated and nearly killed off Don Chinjao in the past, whose bounty was worth around 500,000,000 in his prime and was said to be able to split a continent with a headbutt. Even in old age, he is still powerful and capable of pulling off great stunts: battering former Admiral Kuzan, sending the massive giant Sanjuan Wolf flying into the ocean, and inflicting severe damage on Avalo Pizzaro's island Avatar.

He also has leadership skills, being a Marine vice admiral and the commanding officer of the 153rd Marine Branch.

In addition to his legendary strength, he has incredible durability and pain-tolerance, as seen when he was slashed by Captain Morgan's axe hand, only to recover only seconds later, with no obvious pain and apparently being oblivious to the fact he was struck at all. This was due to the fact he fell asleep before he was being attacked. He was able to get back on his feet after being punched by Luffy in Gear Second at point-blank range without losing consciousness and we have to take note that the punch was made possible only because Garp allowed Luffy to land the strike. And even after that punch, he was able to fight the Blackbeard Pirates along with Sengoku. He took a stab to the abdomen from Shiryu and called it a flesh wound, before he knocked the latter out.

Garp is also very agile, as he jumped high into the sky and intercepted Marco, as he was flying to save Ace.

He has also been shown to be extremely fast, as he easily managed to bypass all of the Straw Hats in order to get to a sleeping Luffy. He intercepted Shiryu's strike at Koby and quickly dashed through Hachinosu to land a devastating attack on Avalo Pizarro's island form. It is evident Whitebeard respects Garp's strength as he mentioned him during his talk with Shanks. It should also be noted that Garp is not seen to carry any weapons, aside from the cannonballs that he throws, which implies that he is most likely a hand-to hand fighter. Another example of Garp's strength is when he was able to easily strike down Marco of the Whitebeard Pirates, despite the latter having his Devil Fruit abilities activated at the time, knocking him back which was something that Kizaru and Akainu seemed unable to do.

The extent of Garp's power and fame is evident round the time of the Battle of Edd War, as Chinjao called Garp a demon to other pirates and three years before the future Pirate King died it was revealed that he was offered the rank of admiral more than once, but repeatedly refused the promotion. Garp's subordinate at that time, Kuzan (later promoted to admiral), commented on how cool Garp was for refusing such an irresistible promotion to which he answers by stating that he does not need a higher position, and that it would reduce his liberty to do what he wants. While being officially ranked as a vice admiral, his power was once or still is enough to qualify him for the rank of admiral or even fleet admiral before he retired. It was later revealed that the reason he chose not to become an admiral is because he refused to be a subordinate of the Celestial Dragons.

Similarly, when it was revealed worldwide that Luffy is Garp's grandson, Luffy's fame rose based on that fact alone, as Demaro Black attempted to use that as one of the strong points in his impersonation of Luffy, and Charlotte Linlin referenced to Garp when Luffy challenged her.

Haki

Like his grandsons Monkey D. Luffy and Portgas D. Ace, Garp is one of the very few people in the world who can use all three types of Haki. He is also a capable teacher, as he taught both Koby and Helmeppo.

Supreme King Haki

Garp possesses Supreme King Haki, which is the rarest form of Haki for those who holds the qualities of a "King". He once remarked on how Luffy inherited it at Marineford. More than most, he has mastered it to the fullest, being able to perform feats beyond knocking out weaker-willed opponents. he is also one of a select few people powerful enough to "infuse" his Supreme King Haki with something, as seen during the raid on Pirate Island by thin streams of black lightning emanating from his hands.

Armament Haki

Garp is an extremely skilled user of Armament Haki, being able to injure Luffy several times, bypassing his rubber body. By hardening his fist, Garp became able to counter and even crush Chinjao's Armament Haki-enhanced drill-shaped head 30 years ago, proving his superior mastery compared to Chinjao, who himself is a masterful Armament Haki user in his own right. During the Summit War of Marineford, he managed to punch and hurt Marco, despite the latter being in his regenerative phoenix form. Furthermore, Garp also can utilize the advanced application of emitting Armament Haki out from his hands, allowing him to attack opponents without making physical contact.

Observation Haki

Garp possesses the ability to use Observation Haki as indicated in his vivre card.

Weapons

So far, Garp has been seen throwing cannonballs (including a giant one, mounted on a chain) with his bare hands as if it is like baseball. The cannonballs he threw soared at a faster velocity than when fired out of a cannon, due to Garp's monstrous strength.

Attack List

  • Ai aru Kobushi (愛ある拳 Ai aru Kobushi, literally meaning "Fist of Love"): A simple but powerful punch to strike Luffy on his head, imbued with Armament Haki to hurt him. It's a gag technique to "show" his love for his grandsons. He's been shown to have used this on Ace during his childhood as well. In the FUNimation sub, it's called Fist of Love.
  • Genkotsu Meteor (拳骨隕石(メテオ) Genkotsu Meteo, literally meaning "Fist Meteorite"): Garp throws a cannonball at an enemy ship. Due to Garp's superhuman strength, he can throw them like baseballs, and the impacts are more powerful than when being fired from an actual cannon.
  • Genkotsu Ryuseigun (拳骨流星群 Genkotsu Ryūseigun, literally meaning "Fist Meteor Shower"): Garp throws one thousand iron cannonballs at enemy ships. The cannonballs are supplied by conveyor belts on either side of him. In the FUNimation subs this is called Meteor Fist Shower.
  • Galaxy Impact ( Gyarakushī Inpakuto?, literally meaning "Fist Collision"): Garp infuses his fist with Armament and Supreme King Haki and then delivers a massively powerful punch with shockwaves that encompass a large radius.
  • Blue Hole ( Burū Hōru?, literally meaning "Seafloor Fall"): Garp infuses his fist with Armament and Supreme King Haki, then grabs an opponent by the face and slams them downwards, creating a massively deep hole in the ground as they fall. This was first seen used against Kuzan. A blue hole is a large marine cavern or sinkhole.
  • Galaxy Divide ( Gyarakushī Dibaido?, literally meaning "Fist Cleaving"): Garp infuses his fist with Armament and Supreme King Haki and then delivers a powerful shockwave punch that creates a vertical fissure on his target. This was first seen used against the Hachinosu skull face controlled by Avalo Pizarro.

You can't stop me like that, you dumbass! I thought I taught you to 'live in the now!' Listen up, Kuzan! Only weaklings... lost their way!!
~ Garp when overpowering Kuzan.
You know Luffy is my grandson. I spent years trying to train him. Trying to build him into a proper marine. He resisted me every step of the way. Wouldn't listen. Wouldn't learn. Wouldn't cooperate.
~ Garp to Koby about his gradson Luffy in One Piece Live Action.
Shiryu... you little hoodlum of Impel Down!
~ Garp when he slammed Shiryu down after gotten stabbed by his sword.

Trivia

  • Garp has been strong enough to qualify as an Admiral for decades, but refused the promotion as it would put him directly under the command of the Celestial Dragons; thus showing despite his belief in justice and the Marines, he is aware of the systemic corruption well enough to avoid being party to it. Although, the death of Ace and the target placed on Luffy made him consider retiring, until Kong convinced him to remain just to train the recruits, while keeping his rank, since his retirement could cause chaotic consequences.
  • Like Luffy, he has the habit of picking his nose when bored.
  • When Garp and Luffy reunited in Water 7, Garp's punches were able to hurt him despite his Devil Fruit Powers, with the reason given as "love." This was prior the introduction of the concept of Haki, therefore it can be concluded that the real reason was his immense Haki that can bypass typical Devil Fruit-gifted immunities.
    • Garp was the first one whose normal punches hurt Luffy, although Nami could also hurt him with her hits before Garp. However, it may not count as Nami's punches on her captain were always for comedic purposes.
  • Garp's imprisonment by Blackbeard is similar to his late adoptive grandson, Portgas D. Ace.
  • He is one of the few people Luffy has admitted to being afraid of.
