Min Byung-Gyu is a supporting character in the dark fantasy Korean manhwa and light novel series, Solo Leveling. He aws a member of the Jeju Island Raid Party and a Korean S-rank hunter who lost his life during the battle against the hidden boss of Jeju Island, the Ant King. He was subsequently temporarily revived and recruited as a shadow by Sung Jinwoo for him to heal Cha Hae-In, who was on the verge of death following her battle against the Ant King, but sustained her wounds thanks to shadow Byung-Gyu.

He is voiced by Junya Enoki in Japanese and by Lee George in English.

Personality

Min opted for an early retirement and intended to stop working as a hunter in order to start a regular job as a civilian in Korea. That is due to Byung-Gyu being known for his amiable and empathetic nature, harbouring a deep aversion to brutality. He is possibly the only shadow who acted on his own to heal Hae-In, even thought he has not received any orders from Jinwoo.

Biography

Prior to a year before the Double Dungeon arc, he, Baek Yoonho, Eunseok, and some others attempted to raid a dungeon on Jeju Island. However, overwhelmed by the power of the ants of the island, the mission ended in major tragedies, including losing Eunseok, which left terrible memories to Baek and Jong-In, as well as prompting Min to retire retire as a hunter for good.

Return to Demon Castle Arc

Several years after, ants have been said to have evolved all of a sudden, which brought concern to many around Korea and Japan. Baek and Byung-Gyu are sharing a drink where Min discuss how he intends to start his career as a school history teacher and swore that he will not join the 4th Jeju Island Raid.

Jeju Island Arc

However, Min at the last moment, Min decided to join Baek and the rest of the crew on the mission, to Baek's surprise. A day later Min is seen aiding his teammates in healing them while they face the magical beasts. As they defeat the last magical beast, being the boss of the dungeon, the Ant Queen's death causes the Ant King to arrive and discover the death of his mother.

Out of rage, the ant decides to avenge her by attempting to slaughter every single hunter on sight. The king began a rampage by attacking each hunter one by one. He rips apart both arms of one of Ma Dongwook. But Ma soon recovers by regrowing back both of his limbs and reattacks the magical beast. The Ant King easily takes him out by seizing his leg and swings him around. He soon notices the presence of Byung-Gyu despite having hidden his presence while healing his allies. He is stabbed through the chest by the Ant King from behind, killing him.

After Sung Jinwoo arrives to kill the Ant King, his corpse is picked up by one of Jinwoo's shadows and put on the ground to be revived by him. After a few attempts of using to revive the healer, he eventually succeeds in recruiting the hunter as one of his shadow soldiers Baek touches his shoulder to question him if he is reviving him. The other hunters are stunned by such an ability to revive the dead. Without hesitation, the shadow Byung-Gyu walks toward one of his unconscious teammates, Cha Hae-In after the battle against the Ant King. As he heals her, Sun Jinwoo comments that he can feel what can of person he is. Upon saving Hae-In's life, Baek requests Jinwoo to not use him in further battles as he is tired of fighting. Jinwoo accepts this and cancels the extraction, causing the shadow to fad away as he smiles and looks at Baek.
