Junko Hokaze is a minor character in the A Certain Magical Index franchise, serving as a supporting character in A Certain Scientific Railgun and the main protagonist of its spin-off series, Astral Buddy.
A Level 4 esper of Academy City, Junko is a third-year student of the prestigious Tokiwadai Middle School and one of the many followers of Misaki Shokuhou, being her most loyal member and right-hand. Despite being Misaki's second-in-command, she is the one that manages the group due to Misaki's lazy personality.
She is voiced by Minami Tsuda in Japanese and by Michelle Lee in English.
Appearance
Junko is a very beautiful and elegant young girl with a slender figure and purple eyes. Her most notable characteristic is her long lavender hair which is styled in ringlet curls. Similar to Misaki, Junko has a very well-endowed chest, though its rather hidden, partly because she carries herself more modestly, but also because her preferred model of bra is a bit too small for her. She wears the standard Tokiwadai Middle School school uniform.
Personality
Befitting her elegant appearance, Junko is a very kind and friendly person. However, she has a rather naïve and innocent nature, especially when it comes to romance and sex, such as when she was unable to comprehend Aogami's lewd conversation about Indian Poker cards and was completely ignorant about same-sex relationship until Kuroko explained to her, which resulted in Junko becoming a blushing mess.
She is shown to be extremely loyal to Misaki Shokuhou and holds immense admiration towards her. Junko's devotion to Misaki is shown to be entirely genuine and not a result of Misaki's mind control. She is very protective of Misaki and is willing to help her out in anyway she can. In Astral Buddy, Junko begins to question if her feelings towards Misaki are just those of friendship or romantic love. While giving Misaki a massage, it's depicted as being rather intimate and Junko is shown to become increasingly flustered and ecstatic throughout the scene.
Aside from this, Junko gets along surprisingly well with Mikoto due to their shared obsession with Gekota and wishes that Misaki and Mikoto would get along. Junko even managed to befriend Gunha Sogiita after their battle, inviting him for tea and to spar sometimes. Despite her naivety, Junko is quite intelligent and is capable of holding her own in a fight due to her esper power.
Junko is rather selfless and is willing to aid anyone in need. Because of her esper power's potential, Junko subconsciously holds back out of fear of hurting others. As a kid, she was reclusive and repeatedly told people not to get near her so they wouldn't get hurt. Junko is shown to regret being unable to save her friends from the Ideal and also regrets pushing them away due to her difficulty in controlling her powers.
Background
Junko was once a test subject of Clone Dolly: Ideal, an esper research laboratory dedicated to developing the "ideal" esper power. There she met Misaki Shokuhou, alongside Senya Yuuri, Ayu Mitsuari, and the Yumiya sisters: Iruka and Rakko.
Powers and Abilities
Powers
Rampage Dress: Junko's Level 4 esper power which allows her to manipulate the electrical signals in her own body to consciously control it at the cellular level in order to surpass her physical limits. However, she can still harm herself if she pushes her body too much, as seen when she tried to stop herself and another student from falling by grabbing onto a tree branch and the momentum damaged her shoulder.
- Enhanced Strength: Junko can use Rampage Dress to drastically increase her own strength to superhuman levels. With this, she is shown to be strong enough to lift and throw steel beams or break through reinforced walls. When Arei Houjou tried to blind her by throwing a liquid at her eyes, Junko countered by headbutting Arei and breaking her nose.
- Enhanced Speed: Junko can move at superhuman speed when using Rampage Dress. When running from Senya Yuuri, Junko managed to gain a considerable distance from her for a while. She is fast enough to keep up with Gunha Sogiita and jump between roofs.
- Enhanced Senses: Junko can use Rampage Dress to enhance her senses, such as her sense of smell. She was able to track down her stalker by hunting down the smell of her perfume.
- Regeneration: Junko's power gives her a high-speed regeneration ability through rapid cell division that heals small injuries like cuts and burns so fast even people close to her or herself have issues telling if she was injured or not in the first place. However, overuse of this regeneration places a heavy burden in her body and mind, taking the form of powerful headaches.
