I won’t be defeated so easily. I’ll show you that being arrogant and full of yourself isn’t the only kind of strength! Guts aren’t something you lose just because you’re at a disadvantage! I’ll show you what true guts are!! You don’t need some great reason. A man who isn’t twisted or rotten, even if he’s a complete stranger, can stand up for some injured girls!!

AMAZING PUNCH!!!
~ Gunha calling out his signature move.

Gunha Sogiita is a major character in the A Certain Magical Index franchise.

He is a Gemstone esper and one of Academy City's seven Level 5 espers, being ranked 7th and is the strongest Gemstone in the series thus far. He is known for his headstrong nature and belief that anything can be accomplished through sheer "Guts" alone.

He is voiced by Kengo Kawanishi in Japanese and Matt Shipman in English.

Appearance

Gunha is a young man with spiky black hair which is swept back. He is normally seen wearing his signature Rising Sun shirt underneath his white school uniform with his jacket always on his shoulders like a makeshift cape.

Personality

Gunha Sogiita is typically shown to be a hot-blooded, boisterous and reckless person who behaves in the same manner as archetypal superheroes, making dramatic speeches all the time and announces his arrival. He has a very strong sense of justice, as he's constantly wandering around Academy City helping people in need and will never turn down a request. However, despite his righteousness, Gunha has a tendency to rush into situations headfirst without considering the consequences and even brushes off people trying to explain the situation to him.

Notably, Gunha believes that anything can be solved through pure "GUTS" alone, often shouting the word "guts" out loud. He is also known to telegraph and announce his attacks even in the heat of a battle. Due to his philosophy, Gunha is extremely honorable and refuses to attack from behind, believing that a true warrior wouldn't sink to dirty tactics. Gunha is also quite affable, easily befriending Touma or Junko, even when he didn't have the best meeting with the latter.

Furthermore, in spite of being a Level 5 esper, Gunha is shown to be incredibly dense. When Mikoto tried her railgun attack on him, his first reaction was to scold her for taking an arcade coin out of the arcade. Because his powers are very hard to define or comprehend, Gunha usually gives random and illogical explanations for how his powers work, even though he has no idea how they work himself. Despite his tendency to act before thinking, Gunha can be rather calm and tactical at times, especially when the battle becomes more intense. After Misaka's Level 6 shift is disconnected from Exterior, Gunha is able to deduce the difference between Misaka's power from then and now, and that Touma's Imagine Breaker will not have any effect on it.

Biography

Gunha's full background and history is currently unknown. How he became a Level 5 is not known, but he is regarded as one of the purest Gemstone espers in the world.

Powers and Abilities

Powers

  • Unknown Ability: Gunha's esper ability defies all understanding, allowing him to achieve impossible feats apparently through sheer "guts". His ability manifests in several different ways, which is the reason why all Academy City researchers (including the renowned Kihara Family) is unable to properly comprehend or classify his power.
    • Attack Crash: Gunha's primary ability which allows him to deliver a powerful punch which hits the opponent with a mysterious force from a distance. When executing this move, he yells out "Amazing Punch" but has used some variations of this attack, adding to the name words like "Super", "Ultra", "Giga" or "Hyper" (or several of them at the same time), but Yokosuna, a Level 0 who is constantly challenging Gunha and has tanked several of Gunha's Amazing Punches over their numerous duels, states the Super Amazing Punch doesn't get any stronger than his regular Amazing Punch, so it's very likely that the words added are just part of Gunha's superhero delusions and don't relate to the actual strength of the attack. Gunha initially believed that to use the Amazing Punch he was creating an unstable wall of psychokinesis in front of him and destroying it with a stimulus provided by his own fist, causing it to send an explosive after-effect at long distance. He is similarly able to produce an overwhelming blast of wind with a punch and once stopped several falling metal containers from crushing him just by raising his hands and blowing them upwards.
    • Aurora Guard: Gunha claims that he can bring up a part of Earth's electromagnetic field by using "telekinesis" to divert electric attacks. The "field" is powerful enough to protect him from Mikoto Misaka's most powerful lightning strikes. The defense is not perfect, and after tanking continuous electrical attacks from Mikoto he started to develop burns in his body, though he was indifferent to them. It was then stated that doing what he claimed he did was impossible, so the exact mechanics of how he can stop electric attacks are unknown. Gunha has an apparently stronger version of Aurora Guard that he used to defend himself from Mikoto's last lightning bolt during their friendly match, yelling Super Ultra Defense and covering himself in red, blue, yellow, and other color explosions.
      • Amazing Punch Guard: Gunha can cover his fist with the Aurora Guard, which allows him to punch and redirect electricity, as seen when he punched Mikoto's electricity to the ground.
      • Pressure Creation: Gunha can create a large wall of "pressure" by taking a deep breath while in a martial arts stance. This was best shown when he created a powerful barrier to restrain Mikoto's countless black lightning bolts during the Level 6 Shift. However, he experiences internal pain when the barriers are struck by an even stronger attack.
    • Enhanced Strength: Gunha is shown to be incredibly strong, as shown when he lifted Touma and threw him at great distance with only one arm. He can also pack punches so powerful that it can cause the air itself to produce large flames and headbutt away an iron bar.
    • Enhanced Speed: Gunha is able to move at least two times as fast as the speed of sound. He can grab a person thrown at high speeds before they touch the ground with ease.
    • Enhanced Durability: Gunha appears to be indifferent to pain, which he claims it's a result of overcoming it with guts. All Gunha can feel is just a little prickly pain whether he's cut or pierced. He managed to catch Mikoto's Railgun at 30% output with his teeth without being hurt at all and being hit by Mikoto's lightning bolt only made him a bit numb before continuing to talk as if nothing had happened. Gunha also has a strange body structure which allows him to fight even when his vital organs are damaged (i.e. being shot or stabbed directly in the heart).
    • Enhanced Leaping: Gunha can perform a leap so high that it covers several meters. A jump of him creates air pressure so strong that no one could breathe in the surroundings.
    • Fragokinesis: Gunha is capable of spontaneously generating multi-colored explosions behind him similar to the ones used in tokusatsu shows. These explosions are able to knock nearby targets off their feet.
    • Voice Amplification: Gunha can slow a fall or knockback opponents by shouting loudly enough, allowing him to get back on his feet and disorienting nearby bystanders after he was teleported upside-down by Kuroko.
    • Regeneration: Through unknown means, Gunha can heal himself. He can stop himself from bleeding or repair broken bones. Getting shot or stabbed in the heart will be of little consequence to him, as he also can recover from that level of injury with ease. While the exact methods are unclear, Gunha claims that he can heal himself with "guts".
    • Electrokinesis: After battling Misaka and Junko, Gunha developed the ability to create electricity. He can incorporate this new power with his Attack Crash to produce an electrical version of Amazing Punch.
    • Air Jumping: By repeatedly kicking off the air, Gunha is able to jump or even walk through the air itself.
    • Telepathic Immunity: Gunha is apparently immune to telepathic powers like Mental Out.

Trivia

  • In A Certain Scientific Railgun T, his iconic Rising Sun shirt was removed and was replaced by a plain red shirt. This might have happened as the Rising Sun shirt could cause problems because the flag was used during their Japanese Imperialism era.
