Hyunckel is one of the two tritagonists (alongside Maam) of the manga/anime series Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai.
Initially the leader of the Undead Legion within the Dark Army, he is revealed to be the very first disciple of the Great Hero Avan. Believing Avan to have killed his adoptive father Bartos, Hyunckel was determined to kill him in return, but when Avan apparently sacrifices himself to take down Hadlar, he redirects his hatred to Avan's disciples instead. After learning the truth about his father's death at the hand of Hadlar and moved by Crocodine's words, he redeems himself and becomes an ally of Dai.
In Japanese, he was voiced by Hideyuki Hori in the 1991 anime and Yuki Kaji in the 2020 anime. In English, he was voiced by Vincent Tong in the 2020 anime.
Biography
Hyunckel originated from a town burned by Hadlar's army during the latter's first reign of terror. After his parents' death, he was abandoned as a baby, only to be adopted by its general Bartos. Hyunckel grew up among the monsters and viewed them as family, but one day, the Great Hero Avan and his allies invaded Hadlar's lair and personally slayed the Dark Lord himself. Afterwards, Hyunckel found Bartos mortally injured and immediately died among many other deceased monsters, seemingly because of Avan's attack. Hyunckel was later found by Avan himself and agreed to be taken in to be the hero's apprentice with the intention to kill him to avenge his adopted family.
Unbeknownst to him however, Bartos wasn't killed by Avan's attack, but by Hadlar himself for failing to protect him. Under Avan's tutulege, Hyunckel learned both the Earth Slash and Wave Slash. During his graduation, after receiving Avan's pendant, Hyunckel tried to stab his mentor only to be blown into the river when Avan defended himself. Fortunately, Mystvearn found and rescued him, seeing him as a potential vessel when he himself had to return his current body to Vearn. Mystvearn then mentored Hyunckel, who became greatly favored by Vearn himself.
When Vearn formed the Dark Army, Hyunckel was appointed the commander of the Undead Legion due to his hatred for humanity. Despite working under Hadlar, he strongly resented him since he believed that Hadlar failed to save Bartos despite his power, unaware of the ironic truth.
After Crocodine's defeat in the Kingdom of Romos, Hyunckel was sent to invade Papnica, although Princess Leona and her people managed to evacuate in time. When he was attacking Dai and Popp, Crocodine turned out to be alive and protected them. After he send Garuda away to escort both Dai and Popp away from the battle, he tearfully tells Hyunckel how his fight against Dai has changed the perspective of his ways, before succumbing to his wounds and seemingly dies. He was then sent to get his wound treated by Moruge under Hyunckel's orders, and Hyunckel successfully captured Maam.
However, it turns out that Crocodine has actually survived from dying and rescuing Hyunckel from getting drowned and burned in lava with the help of Garuda. While Hyunckel recuperating from his wounds and became depressed out of guilt and regret, but Crocodine convinced that he could still make up and fight back to help Dai and his friends, which he was motivated into becoming a better person. While Hyunckel went to save Popp and Maam from getting killed by Hadlar and help them destroy the Dark Ice Spire, he and Gome arrived to save Dai and Baduck from getting killed by Mystvearn and Zaboera and help them destroy the Dark Flame Spire. After the Dark Flame Spire is destroyed, the Blizzblaze Curse Field has been deactivated around Valge Island and Flazzard went to confront and fought with the heroes. After Flazzard is finally defeated, he and the others went back to the Valge Tower to help freeing Leona from being frozen.
Back at the Papnica Kingdom, everyone were celebrating over their victory against Flazzard, and Hyunckel revealed his identity to Leona and was ready to accept punishment. However, Leona forgave him and told him to always be Avan's disciple and stop feeling guilty. He and Crocodine later departed themselves from the Papnica Kingdom to spy on the Dark Army to find out what they're up to. The next morning, both Hyunckel and Crocodine discover they lost their trail on the Sovereign Rock Castle, with the former followed the footprints while Crocodine left to warn Dai and his friends about it. He later arrived at Teran Kingdom to help and protect Dai and his friends while fighting Baran. Aftar Baran removed Dai's memories with his resonance, Hyunckel and the others felt like they've lost their hope to stop the Dark Army without getting his memories back.
The next morning, Hyunckel and the others went to the castle where they seek help from the king, which he agreed by placing Dai at the castle dungeon for protection. Popp claims that he'll run away since everyone is doomed all because Dai lost his memories, but in truth he wants to confront the Dragon Riders on his own. When Popp is about to be killed by Galdandy, Hyunckel comes to rescue him, having deduced his true intentions. When Baran is about to kill both Leona and Crocodine, Hyunckel later arrived with Popp in his arms and threw the Dark Armour Spear at the Dragon Legion Commander. Hyunckel attempt to reasoned with him, but only for Baran to become enraged and transformed himself into Dragonoid to finish the heroes.
However, Dai later appears after he escaped from dungeon. When Baran was about to influence the young Dragon Knight, Popp went to defend him from being influenced by Baran and jumping towards him to cast Megante at him in hopes of finishing him for good, but at the cost of his life and succeeds in helping Dai regain his memories back. Now that Dai regained back his spirits and fight against his father, Crocodine threw Hyunckel to the air to help him give Dai a Dark Armour Blade, allowing him to finish off Baran once and for all. Despite their victory, Dai and his friends are still devastated over Popp's demise before Baran revived him with some of his blood before parting his ways so he could wait for him to settle his score with Dai to determine the fate of humanity.
Later that night, Hyunckel and his friends went back to sleep in a wooden cottage while they're almost getting ambushed by Hadlar and Zaboera who attempt to slaughter them all if it weren't for Matoriv and Dai. The next morning, Dai and his friends return back to Papnica Kingdom where Crocodine later helps Dai with his training. After Dai, Popp and Maam returned from the Romos Kingdom after defeating Zamza, he first met a fellow monster named Chiu. When Princess Leona is having a grand world summit, he began to look away from the King of Romos in shame the last time they encountered, but the king didn't mind as he knew he's now friends with Dai. When Mystvearn arrived at Papnica Kingdom with Sovereign Rock Castle with him, he later went to help the heroes fight against Myst's Shadow Soldiers until Myst appears and attacked them all with Dark Puppetry Aura Decimation Field. However, Dai later arrived with his new sword, before he defeated Mystvearn and destroyed the Sovereign Rock Castle. Enraged, Mystvearn attempt to reveal his true appearance to unleash his ultimate power at the heroes before Killvearn arrives and stop him from doing so.
When they finally got to the Tower of Supremacy, Hyunckel and the others ended up getting turned into Eye Jewels by Vearn, alongside Maam, Crocodine, Brokeena and Chiu. When Vearn is about to detonate the Black Cores out of desperation, Leona's wish of the ones who were being trapped inside an Eye Jewel to move and do something is finally granted, allowing them all to move by themselves to stop him from doing so. After the heroes are being escorted away from the fight between Dai and Vearn, they ended up in the Heart of Vearn Palace. After Hym unleash the Grand Cross to escape, they managed to land down to the ground safely. Noticing that Dai is still fighting against Vearn from above, he and the others hoping that he could win.
Following Vearn's death at the hands of Dai, Hyunckel and the others are witnessing him falling from the sky until Popp went to catch him. Hearing about what happened to Vearn, everyone were celebrating over their victory against the Dark King. Flora reminded Leona to keep Dai out of sight because she doesn't want him to end up like Avan who disappeared following his last battle with Avan, humiliating him in front of his disciples as result. Once they're about to go home, Killvearn appears in front of them to mockingly congratulates them of their victory. He later reveals his true identity to them, was "Piroro" who is the true mastermind behind the puppet's actions, and later activating the Black Core inside the puppet's head to destroy the entire Surface World, along with the six other ones set up by Vearn. When Dai and Popp drags the puppet's body into the sky to prevent the explosion, Maam went forward and succeed in killing Killvearn. Dai later sacrificed himself into getting involved in the puppet's explosion, much to Maam and the others' horror of seeing it.
Following Dai's sacrifice, he and the others were searching for him for weeks, but couldn't find him anywhere. While mourning for him as they stared at the Sword of Dai, they were surprised to realized that Dai may come back since he's still alive. The epilogue shows him and Larhart going together in another adventure, with Amy secretly following them.
