Crocodine is a major protagonist of the manga/anime series Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai. He used to be the Furfang Legion Commander of the Dark Army until he later redeemed himself after Dai defeated him, becoming one of his allies who help him defeat the Dark Army and save the world.
In Japanese, he was voiced by Banjō Ginga in the 1991 anime and Tomoaki Maeno in the 2020 anime. In English, he was voiced by Jason Simpson (who also voiced Viren) in the 2020 anime.
Biography
Crocodine was once a member of the Dark Army as a Furfang Legion Commander. During the day when the Sovereign Rock Castle is finished building, Hadlar and the six Legion Commanders were summoned by the Dark King Vearn and offered them Infernal Emblem to prove their loyalty to him as a celebration. He and the other Legion Commanders tried to grab the Emblem but to no avail, and Flazzard successfully grabbed it without hesitation. Prior to Dai and Popp's arrival, he was sent into attacking and terrorizing the Romos Kingdom.
That night, Crocodine was contacted by Hadlar who ordered him to kill Dai due to seeing him as a bigger threat for the Dark Army, which he gleefully accepts. While Dai and Popp are lost in the woods, he went to ambushed in front of them, causing Popp to run away in fear and Dai is left alone to fight him. When he was about to kill the Hero, Popp and Maam later arrived as the latter healed Dai with a Tingle spell, which allowed him to defeat the Beast King. While he was venting his anger over his failure of defeating Dai, Zaboera arrived and taking advantage of his honor and insecurity by suggesting he should summoned a brainwashed Brass to win against Dai, which the Beast King reluctantly accepts.
The next morning, he leads the attack on the Romos Kingdom and breaks into the castle where he held the king hostage, which successfully luring Dai here. During the fight, Crocodine had no other choice but to summoned the brainwashed Brass against Dai, which causing him to back down and avoid hurting him due to being his adopted grandfather who has been raising him the whole life. Maam and the others called him out on this, which Crocodine furiously decided to threw away his honor before he finished them all with Beast King Anguish Blast. When he was about to kill Dai, Popp later arrives and stands up to him, while risking himself of getting beaten up so he could shatter a diamond on his magic rod and use five pieces around Brass to freeing him from Zaboera's brainwashing, allowing Dai to defeat Crocodine with Avan Strash. Despite this, he congratulated Dai for winning against him and admitted his mistakes, before falling off from the castle and got carried away with his monsters.
Back at the Sovereign Rock Castle, Crocodine was placed in Resurrection Fluid to recuperate his wounds following his fight against Dai, but he later managed to break free from it and went to Papnica Kingdom to protect Dai and Popp from getting killed by Hyunckel. After he send Garuda away to escort both Dai and Popp away from the battle, he tearfully tells Hyunckel how his fight against Dai has changed the perspective of his ways, before succumbing to his wounds and seemingly dies. He was then sent to get his wound treated by Moruge under Hyunckel's orders.
However, it turns out that Crocodine has actually survived from dying and rescuing Hyunckel from getting drowned and burned in lava with the help of Garuda. While Hyunckel recuperating from his wounds and became depressed out of guilt and regret, but Crocodine convinced that he could still make up and fight back to help Dai and his friends, which he was motivated into becoming a better person. While Hyunckel went to save Popp and Maam from getting killed by Hadlar and help them destroy the Dark Ice Spire, he and Gome arrived to save Dai and Baduck from getting killed by Mystvearn and Zaboera and help them destroy the Dark Flame Spire. After the Dark Flame Spire is destroyed, the Blizzblaze Curse Field has been deactivated around Valge Island and Flazzard went to confront and fought with the heroes. After Flazzard is finally defeated, he and the others went back to the Valge Tower to help freeing Leona from being frozen, with Crocodine intially considering of shattering the ice but was turned down by Baduck out of fear for her well-being. However, Dai later charge the bullet with Sizzle so Maam could use it to freeing Leona from being frozen.
Back at the Papnica Kingdom, everyone were celebrating over their victory against Flazzard with Crocodine is seen sitting alone due to believing himself to be different until Baduck and his two friends joining with him. He and Hyunckel later departed themselves from the Papnica Kingdom to spy on the Dark Army to find out what they're up to. The next morning, both Crocodine and Hyunckel discover they lost their trail on the Sovereign Rock Castle, with the former left to warn Dai and his friends about it while Hyunckel follow the footprints. He later arrived at Teran Kingdom to help and protect Dai and his friends while fighting Baran. He tried to convinced Baran to reconsider his ways by telling his experience with Dai before he was attacked. Aftar Baran removed Dai's memories with his resonance, Crocodine and the others felt like they've lost their hope to stop the Dark Army without getting his memories back.
The next morning, Crocodine and the others went to the castle where they seek help from the king, which he agreed by placing Dai at the castle dungeon for protection. After Popp claims that he'll run away since everyone is doomed all because Dai lost his memories, Crocodine felt concerned as he was wondering what'll happened to him. When Baran arrived at the Teran Kingdom castle, he and Leona went to face him while also discovering that Popp only lied in order to protect his friends, including Dai. While fighting against Baran, Crocodine went to provoke him into empowering his Aura in order to make him drain his stamina and Magic Power. When Baran is about to kill both Leona and Crocodine, Hyunckel later arrived with Popp being rescued in his arms and threw the Dark Armour Spear at the Dragon Legion Commander. Hyunckel attempt to reasoned with him, but only for Baran to become enraged and transformed himself into Dragonoid to finish the heroes.
However, Dai later appears after he escaped from dungeon. When Baran was about to influence the young Dragon Knight, Popp went to defend him from being influenced by Baran and jumping towards him to cast Megante at him in hopes of finishing him for good, but at the cost of his life and succeeds in helping Dai regain his memories back. Now that Dai regained back his spirits and fight against his father, Crocodine threw Hyunckel to the air to help him give Dai a Dark Armour Blade, allowing him to finish off Baran once and for all. Despite their victory, Dai and his friends are still devastated over Popp's demise before Baran revived him with some of his blood before parting his ways so he could wait for him to settle his score with Dai to determine the fate of humanity.
Later that night, Crocodine and his friends went back to sleep in a wooden cottage while they're almost getting ambushed by Hadlar and Zaboera who attempt to slaughter them all if it weren't for Matoriv and Dai. The next morning, Dai and his friends return back to Papnica Kingdom where Crocodine later helps Dai with his training. While Dai and Popp are left to Romos Martial Arts Tournament, Crocodine stays behind to have his Vortex Axe to be fixed. After Dai, Popp and Maam returned from the Romos Kingdom after defeating Zamza, he first met a fellow monster named Chiu. When Princess Leona is having a grand world summit, he began to look away from the King of Romos in shame the last time they encountered, but the king didn't mind as he knew he's now friends with Dai. When Mystvearn arrived at Papnica Kingdom with Sovereign Rock Castle with him, he later went to help the heroes fight against Myst's Shadow Soldiers until Myst appears and attacked them all with Dark Puppetry Aura Decimation Field. However, Dai later arrived with his new sword, before he defeated Mystvearn and destroyed the Sovereign Rock Castle. Enraged, Mystvearn attempt to reveal his true appearance to unleash his ultimate power at the heroes before Killvearn arrives and stop him from doing so.
After Myst and Kill mock the heroes and left the Papnica Kingdom, Popp angrily went after them but only for him to be lured to their trap in the Field of Death. Later, Crocodine went to rescue Popp from getting killed by Killvearn following Dai's defeat at the hands of Hadlar and comforted him over his guilt. After they returned to Papnica Kingdom, he and Chiu left back to arctic ocean of Northern Orzam Country to search for Dai until Popp joins with them. However, they later managed to found Dai after seeing the pillar of light coming from his Dragon Crest and Crocodine fought with Zaboera who attempt to kill the Hero out of sheer obsession over glory. They later returned back to Papnica Kingdom where Maam and Gome reunites with Dai.
The next morning, Crocodine is seen training at the Valge Whirlpool and enlisted Chiu for his help. Later, he and his friends are setting off to Carl Kingdom where they're having a meeting at the underground base and meets Nova for the first time. After Nova arrogantly left to Zababa Kingdom to fight with Hadlar's Royal Elite Guards by himself, he became impressed of Dai for winning the arguement against Popp over whether they should help Nova or not. Later, he and Maam went to help Dai, Popp and Hyunckel save Nova from the Royal Elite Guards and defeated them with their teamwork, but not before Hadlar ordered his minions to retreat. While everyone are taking of those who were injured, Popp, Hyunckel and Crocodine went to rescue Chiu at the Field of Death. While Popp brings Chiu back to Carl Kingdom, both Hyunckel and Crocodine are confronting Baran over facing Vearn and stopping him from destroying the Surface World before they fought against Albinass who has wounded Hyunckel. After they returned back to Carl Kingdom, he became surprised that Baran's finally reformed and joins with the heroes.
While both Dragon Knights are teaming up to fight Hadlar, Popp, Maam, and Crocodine (with Hyunckel later joins with them) went to fight against the Elite Royal Guards (minus Fenbren who guard the Dark Citadel Gate) until the entire Field of Death exploded, but Crocodine managed to shield his friends with his body. When the heroes got to the Vearn Palace, they're surprised of seeing Dai survived from the explosion but not for his father Baran who died from containing the Black Core's explosion. As Mystvearn, Killvearn and the Dark King Vearn arrived in front of the heroes, they went to fight against Vearn but only to get easily defeated and outmatched until Vearn unleashed his Calamitous Wall which Hyunckel and Crocodine sacrificed themselves to hold it off while their friends escape from Vearn Palace, which costed them getting captured and sentenced to be executed.
While they're being imprisoned, Crocodine wished he would rather die than helping the Dark Army, but became horrified that Hyunckel pretends to considering Mystvearn's offer to take the Dark Aura though he agreed to trust him as he knew what to do. The next morning, the execution of Hyunckel and Crocodine was held at the Loroi Valley. When Hyunckel took the cup of Dark Aura from Myst's hand, he was later painfully corrupted which almost killed him. Myst is about to execute Crocodine, but only to be stopped by Hyunckel who managed to regained his conciousness and secretly suppress the Dark Aura inside him. Later, Dai and his friends emerged from the underground and do the ritual to cast Kaglimmer on the Vearn Palace. However after the Disciples of Avan succeed in casting Kaglimmer on the Vearn Palace and infiltrate it, Crocodine continued fighting against the Dark Army until they defeated all monsters. Zaboera then killed his injured minions and used them for the materials to create his own Hyperzombie to kill the heroes, but only for it to be destroyed by Lon Beruk.
After he was defeated, Zaboera tried to escape from the heroes, but only to be stopped by Crocodine. Out of desperate, Zaboera tried to trick Crocodine into lowering his guard by pretending to beg for mercy before he could poison him to take control of him. However, Crocodine only revealed to have pretend to be fell for his tricks and dropped his axe onto Zaboera's hands before finishing him off with his aura blast, while also commenting on how some people are truly beyond hope. After meeting up with Bardock and return back to the group, he was warned by Lon Beruk about what happened if someone removed Mystvearn's Shadow Raiment. Since the barrier around Vearn Palace is gone, he was chosen to go with Chiu and Brokeena.
When they finally got to the Vearn Palace, Crocodine and his friends found both Hyunckel and Hym where Brokeena went to heal both of them. They later went to help the heroes fight against Mystvearn where Hym managed to defeat the Shadow Vizier with his Light Aura. When Hym was about to unveil Myst's Shadow Raiment, Crocodine warned the heroes about what happened if someone unveiled it. After hearing Dai seemingly finish off Vearn, Mystvearn became desperate so much that he has no choice but to unveil his true face in front of them and used his master's full power on them, not only Crocodine's Beast King Indomitable Blast can be able to hit him. After Popp and Brokeena seemingly annihilated by Mystvearn, Avan later returns and revealed Myst's secret in front of the heroes, which he later admits it before returning Vearn's original body back to him, revealing his true form in front of the heroes and went to possess Maam when she tried to attack him. Crocodine realized the reason why he respect strong men like Hadlar and Baran was because he has no body of his own, which he truly admits it. After Myst is finally destroyed by Hyunckel's Light Aura inside of him, the heroes went up to the Tower of Supremacy to help Dai fight against Vearn.
When they finally got to the Tower of Supremacy, Crocodine and the others ended up getting turned into Eye Jewels by Vearn, alongside Maam, Hyunckel, Brokeena and Chiu. When Vearn is about to detonate the Black Cores out of desperation, Leona's wish of the ones who were being trapped inside an Eye Jewel to move and do something is finally granted, allowing them all to move by themselves to stop him from doing so. After the heroes are being escorted away from the fight between Dai and Vearn, they ended up in the Heart of Vearn Palace. Crocodine attempt to burst through the heart with his fist, but to no avail. After Hym unleash the Grand Cross to escape, they managed to land down to the ground safely. As he and the others were reunited with their allies, Crocodine reunites with General Bowson. Noticing that Dai is still fighting against Vearn from above, he and the others hoping that he could win.
After Dai has defeated Vearn and then falling down to Earth, Crocodine and the others are cheering over their victory as they heard from Dai about what happened with the Dark King. When Flora reminds Leona to keep an eye on Dai if he doesn't want to ended up like Avan, Crocodine and his friends laughed at him for this. When the heroes were about to go back home to celebrate, Killvearn appears in front of them to mockingly congratulates them of their victory. He later reveals his true identity to them, was "Piroro" who is the true mastermind behind the puppet's actions, and later activating the Black Core inside the puppet's head to destroy the entire Surface World, along with the six other ones set up by Vearn. Later, everyone were horrified of seeing Dai got caught in explosion as he sacrifice himself alone.
Following Dai's sacrifice, he and the others were searching for him for weeks, but couldn't find him anywhere. While mourning for him as they stared at the Sword of Dai, they were surprised to realized that Dai may come back since he's still alive. The epilogue shows him living at Dermline Island along with Chiu and Hym, as they're building a fort for the Beast King Commandos.
