Charles Smith is one of the two tritagonists (alongside Sadie Adler) in the 2018 action-adventure video game Red Dead Redemption II.
He is a Native African-American survivalist, who was once a member of the Van der Linde Gang, serving as the gang's hunter and supporter during robberies. His weapons include a sawed-off shotgun, a knife, a tomahawk and a bow and arrow. He is physically the strongest gang member, being strong enough to hurl Micah Bell with ease, and is also a highly lethal close-quarters fighter, but not as skilled as Arthur.
Despite being a criminal outlaw, he is one of the most moral characters in the game and possesses a strong sense of honor and compassion, alongside Hosea. He is also one of Arthur Morgan's closest friends, siding with him when the gang began to fell apart.
He is voiced by Noshir Dalal.
Personality
Charles has been described as a quiet and reserved person, yet very competent in everything he takes part in, especially when he is in a fight to the extent that he is able to successfully compete in fighting tournaments such as in Saint Denis in 1907. In addition he was generally a good and honest man in spite of his deadliness as a fighter. He is shown to be courageous and selfless as well, providing whatever help he could to the Wapiti Indian Reservation and going as far as to rescue Captain Monroe and Eagle Flies from the US Army. Arguably the most honorable member of the gang, Charles is cool headed and reluctant to kill; the blood spilled by the gang is ultimately what causes him to become disillusioned with it, with Charles developing a preference of helping the Wapiti Indians instead. he is also shown to be thoughtful and kind, burying Arthur in a particularly picturesque spot with a decorated gravestone, as well as, seemingly unconditionally, helping john to construct the ranch at Beecher’s Hope in 1907. He also showed a high degree of loyalty, such as when he accompanied Arthur to Beaver Hollow without questioning why they were going there. Charles was also one of the gang members that noticed and spoke out against Dutch’s erratic behavior. He showed a strong dislike towards Micah Bell, as shown when he is called a redskin by Bell.
