Any objections, Lady?
~ ADAM's catchphrase.
Do not worry. One of them will understand. One of them must.
~ ADAM reassuring Samus at the end of Metroid Fusion.

ADAM is the deuteragonist of the 2002 action-adventure game Metroid Fusion and its 2021 sequel, Metroid Dread. It is an Artificial Intelligence made to honor Adam Malkovich after his death and programmed to possess a copy of his brilliant military mind. Working on behalf of the Galactic Federation, ADAM provides Samus Aran information and guides her through the X-Parasite crises on the BSL station and ZDR, sometimes even going against orders to do so.

Appearance

In Metroid Fusion, the closest ADAM has to a physical appearance is a purple lens shown on his dialog boxes. In Metroid Dread however, ADAM appears as a black sphere with light blue lighting and a checkered center made up of cubes that move when ADAM speaks.

Personality

ADAM was made to have the same military mind as the original Adam Malkovich, but it initially lacked much of his personality when it began working with Samus aboard the B.S.L. research station. It was not until Samus questioned ADAM's orders from the Galactic Federation to preserve the X Parasites for military purposes that Malkovich's characteristics began to surface within the computer. Like its namesake, ADAM will sometimes end Samus's mission briefs with the sentence "Any objections, Lady?" and will often provide intel about her objectives. Although ADAM expresses confidence in Samus's abilities, it has also shown concern for her welfare when she was tasked to learn what had become of the highly dangerous E.M.M.I. by stating it was not worth the risk.

History

Metroid Fusion

ADAM was housed in the onboard computer inside Samus's new Starship and could communicate with her within Navigation Rooms found on the Biologic Space Laboratories research station. ADAM had some control over the station, though it was limited to unlocking doors and restoring the power to elevators. However, it seemed to know enough about the station to have some insight into how Samus can achieve her objectives. When the A.I. started giving orders to Samus, she decided to call it ADAM as it reminded the bounty hunter of her old commanding officer and friend Adam Malkovich.

After it is revealed that B.S.L. scientists have been conducting illegal bioweapon research into Metroids, ADAM orders Samus to gather as much information as she can about their work and return to report her findings. But Samus disagreed with this order, and decided to destroy the entire research wing instead to prevent misuse of the information. For this insubordination, ADAM told Samus to return to her Starship so the Galactic Federation can takeover the mission once they arrive at the station. However, Samus did not follow through with this procedure, forcing ADAM to lock her in the Navigation Room to prevent her from interfering any further.

Samus begged the A.I. to open the doors and absentmindedly called it Adam aloud for the first time, leading them to have a brief conversation about Malkovich and his sacrifice to save Samus along with the universe. ADAM considered the man's actions to be foolish, especially since Samus was putting her own welfare aside in a similar manner, when something seemingly changed within the computer, causing it to go against the federation's interests. ADAM informed Samus of a way to eliminate the X (both within the B.S.L. station and on SR388) without making the same sacrifice Malkovich did. It then ended its briefing with the words "Any objections, Lady?" which made Samus realise the A.I. was a digital backup of Malkovich's mind.

Metroid Dread

ADAM appears as an AI activated via Text to Speech and provides information about Raven Beak and the E.M.M.I.s, usually ending his sentences with "Any objections, Lady?". Throughout the story until the game's climax, Raven Beak is revealed to have impersonated ADAM during her expedition through Planet ZDR. At the end of the game, when Samus was about to touch the controls while transformed into a full Metroid, ADAM stops her at the last moment and tells her that she will drain her ship if she did that. Fortunately, Quiet Robe's X form appears to her and willingly lets himself be absorbed by Samus to help neutralize her Metroid powers so she can safely activate her ship and escape from ZDR, which then explodes.

Quotes

Metroid Fusion

ADAM: …Adam? …Who is Adam?
Samus: A friend of mine.
ADAM: And what would this… friend advise you to do right now?
Samus: He would know that the only way to end this is to start the self-destruct cycle. He'd know how important it is…
ADAM: Did this "Adam" care for you? Would he sit in a safe command room and order you to die?
Samus: He would understand that some must live and some must die… He knew what it meant. He made that sacrifice once.
ADAM: So, he chose life for you? Our fair warrior, Samus Aran… Your Adam gave his life so that you might keep yours… For the sake of the universe… How foolish.
~ Samus telling ADAM about his namesake.
You know that detonating this station in high orbit would not guarantee the complete extinction of the X parasites, even though the station would be utterly destroyed… You would only succeed in removing the one obstacle to the galaxy's ruin… yourself. You would ignore this simple fact and choose death. When Adam decided who would live, he chose incorrectly. …If you were to alter the station's orbit, then you might be able to include the planet in the vaporization field of the self-destruct detonation. You would have to start the propulsion sequence now. Before the Federation arrives. Samus, this is your last mission. Go to the Operations Room and adjust the station's orbit path to intercept SR388. Then return to your ship and escape. Move quickly, and stay alive. That's an order! Any objections, Lady?
~ ADAM betraying the Federation in order to help Samus.

Metroid Dread

The bounty for this mission does not seem appropriate.
~ ADAM expressing his disdain for the Federation at the beginning of Dread.
That elevator leads to the depths of an underground facility. Signal quality is likely to be low. Remote communication may pose a problem. Try to connect to the facility's network when you reach the bottom. That way we can remain in contact. Any objections, Lady?
~ ADAM's final words to Samus before she goes missing on ZDR.
Don't. You'll drain the ship of its energy.
~ ADAM warns the Metroid-transformed Samus against touching her ship's controls.
