The Clan (一族 Ichizoku?) was a faction introduced in the manga Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny Astray.
Overview
The Clan was a secret society whose purpose was to prevent the extinction of humanity and to achieve human prosperity through the manipulation of information. The existence of The Clan was a well-kept secret, even to the members of Logos. The Clan used information manipulation, both to prevent extinction-level wars and to create conflicts to control populations and neutralize perceived threats to its goals.
The Clan's stance towards humanity was one of absolute distrust. It believed that without its intervention, humanity would eventually become extinct[1], either from wars or from the endless pursuit of happiness. They also believed that a world without conflict would result in a society without happiness, as happiness cannot exist without misfortune.[2] To that end, they would start wars by manipulating information. This also served to control the population, which gradually increased as science and technology advanced. Their modus operandi was guiding the world towards "optimization" through information manipulation, thus ensuring the continued existence of humanity.
History
The Clan had existed since ancient times. Originally, it had a clear name. However, due to its absolute power, even speaking of that name became feared, so the group became known simply as "The Clan".
By the early C.E. 70s, The Clan was led by Matisse, who was, on the surface, the leader of an OMNI Enforcer intelligence unit.[2] However, she was opposed by Matias, her brother, who sought to destroy The Clan. Matisse later died together with her brother when he activated the self-destruct mechanism of her Girty Lue-class spaceship, leading to the downfall of The Clan.[1]
Legacy
After the downfall of The Clan, its data was inherited by Librarian Works.
