The Komusai (コムサイ komusai?) is a type of re-entry spacecraft used by the Principality of Zeon during the One Year War. It was first featured in the anime Mobile Suit Gundam[1] and later, the OVAs Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team[2] and Mobile Suit Gundam MS IGLOO: The Hidden One Year War[3].

Technology & Combat Characteristics

A re-entry spacecraft developed by the Principality of Zeon, the Komusai formed parts of the Musai-class light cruiser by docking upside-down in the lower part of the Musai cruiser's bow. When the Komusai is required for use, it could be launched from the main Musai cruiser via a guide rail, which allowed the spacecraft to descend onto Earth with minimal fuel consumption except for attitude adjustment. Due to Komusai's air-tight cabin was located toward the middle fuselage in order to protect it from atmospheric re-entry, it is not possible for the crew to see directly forward or downward during landing.

Besides being a spacecraft, the Komusai was also a lifting-body aircraft that could fly in the atmosphere using its two thermonuclear rocket engines, with later version of Komusai featured sleeker fuselage design with smaller stabilizers at the back, plus a new pair of small wings on both side of fuselage to improve its aerodynamics during atmospheric flight.[3] Its cargo was capable to carry two MS-06 Zaku II mobile suits, though it was also capable to carry other mobile weapons, vehicles and supplies. The cargo compartment had three exits, with three air-tight hatches located at the rear, on top and at the bottom fuselage. This allowed cargoes to be loaded and unloaded in three directions, and the Komusai could drop its cargo while airborne.[3] Due to its compact size, the Komusai could also be carried by the Gaw attack carrier[4].

Armaments

  • Vulcan Gun
Two vulcan guns are mounted in the Komusai's nose.

History

Introduced at the same time as part of the Musai-class light cruiser, the Komusai's had been used since the start of One Year War for transporting mobile suits and senior military officers to Earth from Space, as evidenced in October UC 0079, when Maj. Char Aznable used the Komusai to to enter the Earth sphere and catch up with Col. Garma Zabi of the Earth Attack Force in pursuing EFF's White Base carrier[4]. Despite the advent of Zanzibar-class mobile cruisers, the Komusai continued to be used by Zeon military for Earth-bound supplies and personnel transport. It was also being utilized for other special operations, instances include a Komusai was utilized by the 603rd Tactical Evaluation Unit to carry the YMT-05 Hildolfr mobile tank for re-evaluation test in Arizona, North America on May 9, UC 0079[3]. Another instance occurred in the final days of One Year War, when a group of former test subjects from the Flanagan Institute were loaded into a Komusai and ferried out to the Earth to avoid being captured by the Earth Federation Forces[2].

The Komusai would continue to be used after the One Year War as part of the newer Musai Kai-class light cruisers fielded by the Republic of Zeon.

Notes & Trivia

  • The word Komusai is a katakana which means "little Musai" (Ko = コ (katakana) = small or little (English)).
  • Maj. Char Aznable's involvement with Komusai accounts differently in the animes. In the original Gundam TV series, Char travelled with 2nd. Lt. Dren in Komusai to reach Col. Garma Zabi's Gaw carrier in North American airspace and it was not used since[4]. In Mobile Suit Gundam I motion picture, the Komusai was later deployed from Gaw by Char and Dren with the former launched his Zaku II from Komusai to assist Garma and his Dopp squadron from Gundam's attack. This segment replaced the scene in original TV episode when Char tricked and deceived the Gaw's crew in not receiving Garma's communication to attack the Gundam[5].
