Technology & Combat Characteristics
The Fly Manta is an atmospheric fighter-bomber used by the Earth Federation Forces. It has excellent speed, maneuverability, and cruising range, and is the most produced of the Earth Federation Air Force's main aircraft. Its top speed exceeds the Dopp, and it is adept at dogfighting. The Fly Manta was armed with two triple missile launchers as well as a pair 30mm cannons. It is also loaded with a large number of bombs and can be used for both anti-aircraft and ground combat. Ground missiles and smart bombs can optionally be mounted under the wings.
Armaments
- Missile
- The Fly Manta is equipped with six missile launchers. The launchers can be loaded with air-to-ground or air-to-air missiles. The warheads of the air-to-air missiles break open when they reach the distance set by the pilot, and dozens of submunitions spread out in an inverted conical shape. However, due to the lightweight of the submunitions, their destructive power is low, and even if the enemy is hit by one or two, it is not guaranteed to be destroyed. It is assumed that there will be situations where aiming under dispersed Minovsky particles is unavoidable, so the missiles can be used unguided.
- Automatic Tracking High-Speed 30mm Cannon
- A pair of automatic tracking high-speed 30mm cannons are mounted in the nose.
- Bomb Bay
- The Fly Manta has a pair of munitions bays built into the underside of its fuselage, each one capable of carrying a large explosive for bombing runs.
History
A large number of Fly Mantas participate in Operation Odessa, bombing a military base under the command of M'Quve. Several were later seen engaging with Dopps during the battle at Jaburo.
