Longsword

“Effective against cavalry.”
—In-game description, The Sacred Stones

The Longsword (also known as the Zanbato) is a sword that has concurrently appeared in several titles across the Fire Emblem series. This blade is most notable for possessing the ability to inflict effective damage against mounted horseback units, with the exception of individuals assuming the Troubadour, Valkyrie and Mage Knight classes. Such an effect is enhanced by the fact that this sword boasts stats that are particularly high in the Might and Hit Rate departments, although said merits are offset by its low Durability and heavyweight nature. The Longsword is analogous to the Horseslayer and the Halberd.

Owing to the aforementioned potency that is intrinsically tied to this sword, it is usually one that cannot be readily purchased in-game, positing it as a weapon that can be safely considered to be rare. The most common method that may be employed to acquire it is through the raiding of Chests in certain stages, obtaining it as a loot drop or purloining it from certain enemies. This fact is changed with the onset of Path of Radiance, in which the sword may be readily purchased from the Base armory in selected chapters for a lump sum of 1,260 gold, provided that the player is not playing the game on Hard Mode.

Trivia

Despite Longswords not actually being an item in Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn, they are mentioned in the bonus damage tutorial in the English version of the game. In the Japanese version of Radiant Dawn, Horseslayers are mentioned instead of Longswords.

Etymology

The Zanbatō is a sword of myth, forged by blacksmiths to gauge the level of sophistication and skill of their smithing. The swords themselves are not realistically able to utilized in combat, their size making them impossible to wield properly. Though the idea behind the blade, in legend, was to be of a size to rend both the opposing rider and their horse, hence the weapon's ingame effective bonus against horseback units.
