Vagrant

The vagrant is an old man living in Freeside in 2281.

Background

Like the destitute traveler, he's pretty much a non-entity hanging around in the streets scraping by, occasionally seeing Max run around chasing Stacey with what seems like a toy ray gun in hand.[1] Other than that, not much is known about him or why he became a vagrant.[2]

Quests

  • I Could Make You Care: When the Courier needs to ask around Freeside about a rangefinder, dialogue with him is possible. The Courier can pay him 10 caps for the information,[3] threaten him (Strength 7 needed)[4] or if they have low Intelligence there is special dialogue line which makes him talk like an intellectual person[2] (similar to Torr from Fallout 2). He will show disgust at feigning poverty.[5]

Effects of player's actions

  • If the Courier tries to talk to him, he'll just laugh and cough.[6]
  • If walked by or aimed at, he will grunt unintelligibly and burp.[6]
  • He can be killed without gaining Freeside infamy or Karma loss.

Notable quotes

  • "Indeed I have, my articulate friend. Not a few minutes ago I chanced upon a pair of destitute orphans grappling over just such an item. If you cover the area methodically, I'm quite certain you'll happen upon them with only the most insubstantial of delays. Be well. And do try and avoid the tragic path of the sot that led me to my present infirmities and spiritual woes."
  • "Heh heh heh heh ooo, heh heh heh."
  • "Kids. Run by sh- shumtimes."
  • "Heh heh heh heh heh. <Coughs>"
  • "Wha-?"
  • "<Unintelligible Grunt/Burp>"
  • "Fair thee well."
  • "Herrgghh."

Appearances

The vagrant appears only in Fallout: New Vegas.

Bugs

PCPC Sometimes, if the player kills the vagrant, you will hear quotes like "Are you crazy man, I've got two kids to feed!" or, "Help!", similar to when your reputation in Freeside is lower than neutral, and Freeside thugs try to mug you but flee. [verified]
