Sturges is a handyman and former resident of Quincy in the Commonwealth before being forced to flee with Preston Garvey's Minutemen group after the town was destroyed by the Gunners during the Quincy Massacre in 2287, becoming one of the few surviving group members by the time they were forced to shelter from a raider attack in the Museum of Freedom at Concord. He appears in Fallout 4.
Background
A talented repairman, capable of fixing anything that passes through his hands, Sturges was a long-time handyman serving the people of the town of Quincy, primarily responsible for purchasing power armor frames from the Atom Cats at their garage base and restoring them to full functionality.[1] After the town mayor's request for aid to the Commonwealth Minutemen bore fruit with the arrival of Colonel Ezra Hollis's group and their routing the initial Gunner offensive, Sturges lamented on his personal terminal that the frame he had on hand at the time couldn't be used to lift lumber to fortify the defenses across the city to prepare for subsequent attacks.[2]
Following the collapse of the Minutemen defensive and the destruction of Quincy in what became known as the Quincy Massacre, Sturges was among those who escaped the mercenaries and followed Preston Garvey's group of remaining Minutemen across the Commonwealth. After shaking their pursuers at Jamaica Plain, then losing more of their number to feral ghouls at Lexington, the smaller group was finally brought to ground at Concord, sheltering in the Museum of Freedom from an attack by raiders sent by the raider boss Jared.
Looking for a saving grace, Preston assigned Sturges to the task of breaking the encrypted security lock protecting the museum's fusion generator in order to get its fusion core to power up an old suit of T-45 power armor abandoned on the museum roof since the Great War and give them a fighting chance against the raiders.

Quests
- When Freedom Calls: Sturges explains the plan to get the fusion core in the museum and acquire the T-45 power armor, offering the use of the Novice-locked terminal he's been working on to open its security gate.
- Sanctuary: Sturges tasks the Sole Survivor with building the basic needs for the new settlement to survive.
- The Molecular Level: If the Sole Survivor decides to build the Relay Interceptor with the help of the Minutemen, Sturges will aid in the construction and operation of the machine.
- Inside Job: The Sole Survivor is tasked by Sturges to upload a special holotape into an Institute computer, so he can download information from their mainframe.
- The Nuclear Option: Sturges accompanies the Sole Survivor, Preston, and the Minutemen during the attack on the Institute. After completing the quest, he will reward the player character with a unique automatic laser musket.
Other interactions
- If one defeats the raiders and the deathclaw during When Freedom Calls, Sturges will relocate with the other survivors to Quincy, helping to serve as mediator in the group. He is optimistic that Sanctuary could serve as their new home, and tasks the player with helping build up the basic necessities, introducing them to the settlement system.
- If one completes the Minutemen faction quests The First Step and Taking Independence beforehand, during the main quest The Molecular Level, asking the Minutemen to help build the molecular relay to infiltrate the Institute will lead to Sturges taking on the role of planning its construction, just as Tinker Tom for the Railroad and Proctor Ingram for the Brotherhood of Steel.

Notes
- Although Sturges cannot be killed in normal gameplay, as he is essential, if he is killed with the use of console commands, he will drop a synth component. His status as a synth is never alluded to or mentioned in dialogue in the entire game.
- Sturges also has the Synth trait in Fallout Shelter Online and his biography claims he is a Gen 3 synth created by the Institute but who does not know his origins.
- If helped to settle at Sanctuary, Sturges can occasionally be seen encouraging Jun Long and telling him that he will be fine, concerned about his depression. Jun Long then will apologize for being a burden. This interaction is repeatable.
- Sturges' personal terminal can be located in the Quincy ruins, inside the church which served as his workshop.
- Sturges can be assigned to normal settler tasks in Sanctuary Hills.
- Although Sturges can be ordered to move to a new settlement, the command does not work correctly. Sturges does not physically move to the other settlement. Instead, he is unassigned from any current job and idles in Sanctuary (hammering house walls). His population count is removed from Sanctuary and added to the intended settlement. If he is then assigned from idle activity to a work assignment, his population count is removed from the intended destination and added back to Sanctuary.
- If one accompanies the survivors to Sanctuary during When Freedom Calls, Sturges makes a remark when passing the Red Rocket truck stop, indicating that he would prefer to reside there and turn it into his new workshop.
- Sturges' name in concept art is spelled with two of the letter 's' at the end.
Appearances
Sturges appears in Fallout 4, Fallout: Wasteland Warfare and Fallout Shelter Online. He is mentioned in the quest Game Show Gauntlet in Fallout Shelter.
Behind the scenes
- Sturges is voiced by Philip Anthony-Rodriguez, who also voiced Scott Edwards.
- In localized versions of the game, Sturges' voice is dubbed by Bruno Choël (French), Alessandro Testa (Italian) and Roberto Cuenca Rodríguez (Spanish).
Bugs
- Fast traveling can sometimes fix this issue.
- Leaving a stairway to the roof, then a 2nd 2-step stairs from the roof to eve will allow him and others that get teleported up there to climb down.
- Any character who gets stuck on a roof can be pushed down without being attacked by going into build mode, picking up a turret, and using it to push the character off the edge of the roof.
Sturges, as well as other Sanctuary settlers, will sometimes teleport onto the roof of the house with the workbenches, and the only way to reach him is by making a staircase. The cause seems to be from the game spawning two characters in the same location (one will stand on the other's head) upon fast-traveling to Sanctuary, then one character trying to climb in place, which teleports one of them straight up and they land on the roof. [verified]
- This may be fixed on PC by opening the console and type in: prid 0001a4d8.moveto player while on the desired settlement, setpv bcommandable 1 and fast travel as far away as possible from the settlement and fast travel back to it.
After The Molecular Level is complete, Sturges will be non-assignable, and if the teleporter is built in another place, he will automatically teleport to Sanctuary Hills. [verified]
- Sturges may relocate to the Castle after destroying the Institute with the help of the Minutemen and will stand in the courtyard near the radio tower. He will not move or sleep and cannot be assigned to any jobs, but will count as 1 settler in the player's population.[verified]
