Marcy Long

Nothing I hate more than Raider scumbags. If you run into any, put a few down for me.— Marcy Long

Marcy Long is a former resident of Quincy in the Commonwealth before being forced to flee with Preston Garvey's Minutemen group after the town was destroyed by the Gunners during the Quincy Massacre in 2287, becoming one of the few surviving group members by the time they were forced to shelter from a raider attack in the Museum of Freedom at Concord. She appears in Fallout 4.

Background

When she originally lived in Quincy, Marcy was married to Jun Long and living with him and their son, Kyle, and running a prosperous general store. By 2287, both were skeptical of Mama Murphy's proclaimed visions of Quincy's impending destruction and tried to silence her, but not before Mayor Jackson, heeding Murphy's warning, sent a request for support to the Commonwealth Minutemen.[1]

Although Jun considered the Minutemen a group of freeloaders, he made a complete turnaround when Colonel Ezra Hollis's group including Preston Garvey arrived, routing a detachment of Gunners that had tried to take Quincy by surprise. Marcy, on the other hand, remained concerned that despite the show of force on arrival, Hollis' group by themselves was too few to defend the town against a larger, more coordinated attack; the colonel's further assurances did not ease her mind.[2]

Though the settlers and Minutemen put up a token defense, when the Gunners attacked again, blowing up the highway and attacking with the height advantage, Marcy's worries ere proven right. The Minutemen's efforts lasted only so long and Hollis himself was ultimately executed by the Minutemen turncoat Clint who sided with the Gunners. Only the remaining members of the group now led by Garvey and some of the surviving settlers managed to get away, including Marcy and Jun, but not their son, who was injured and later killed in the attack known as the Quincy Massacre.

The desperate flight across the Commonwealth took its toll: first the Gunners chased them away from Quincy, a failed attempt to settle in Lexington resulted in more of their number being lost to feral ghouls, and eventually, a group of raiders sent by the raider boss Jared hounded them all the way to Concord.[3]

Personality

Having lost everything, including her only son, Marcy is overcome with bitter grief. It manifests primarily as anger: A mixture of various emotions, including furious, unrelenting hatred towards raiders, paranoia and excessive caution (in fact, she is reluctant to settle in any permanent area, due to fear of it being overrun again), and irritation. It takes a great deal to improve her spirits, but even then, the string of bad fortune and losing her only child has left her permanently scarred.

Other interactions

  • After being saved she will become a settler in Sanctuary, along with her husband, Jun, Mama Murphy, Preston Garvey and Sturges.
    • She can sometimes be seen having a conversation with Mama Murphy, in which she will act much less agitated than usual.
    • Upon reaching Sanctuary, Marcy will automatically assign herself as a farmer should there be any form of vegetable plants there, otherwise, she'll just wander about until the player character reassigns her.
    • She may have a conversation with Jun in which he will ask her if she wants to go for a walk by the river. She will respond to this by saying that she has work to do, and Jun will respond with a sad "okay," which she responds to with "maybe later."
  • If Mama Murphy dies during The Sight, Marcy Long will slip into even greater anguish, and blame the Sole Survivor and Preston for not stopping them. Marcy even demonstrates a slight amount of character development at her loss. When the Sole Survivor first meets the group at the Museum of Freedom, Marcy scoffs at Mama Murphy's prediction of Sanctuary, and only agreed to come along once it was explained to her that nobody had a better idea. When Mama Murphy dies, however, Marcy asks "What are we gonna do without the sight?" This suggests that she has come to respect Mama Murphy's talent and accept that it is indeed reliable fortune-telling.
  • Marcy will act a little less cynical if the settlement's overall happiness is high.

  3. The Sole Survivor: "Who are these people?"
Preston Garvey: "Just folks lookin' for a new home. A fresh start. I've been with 'em since Quincy. Lexington looked good for a while, but the Ghouls drove us outta there. A month ago, there were 20 of us. Yesterday there were 8. Now, we're 5. It's just me, the Longs - Marcy and Jun - that's old Mama Murphy on the couch. And this here's Sturges."
    Sturges: "Hey."
The Sole Survivor: "Ghouls? What are ghouls?"
Preston Garvey: "Wow, you really aren't from around here, are you? Ghouls are... irradiated people. Most are just like you and me. They look pretty messed up, and live a long time, but they're still just... people. The ones I'm talking about are different. The radiation's rotted their brains. Made them feral. They'll rip you apart, just as soon as look at you. Anyway, we figured Concord would be a safe place to settle. Those Raiders proved us wrong. But... well, we do have one idea."
