- "Brother, I'm so scared! The lamp seems to be alive!"
- — Minnie
The Lamp is the first and weakest boss introduced in EarthBound Beginnings. It can only be encountered at the very beginning of the game in Ninten's room before he defeats the Doll. It only attacks physically. A second one can also be encountered in Minnie's room, but it is optional. This enemy's battle theme is Battle with a Dangerous Foe.
Defensively, the Lamp has 6 HP and 5 DEFENSE. Offensively, it has 3 OFFENSE, 1 FIGHT, and 5 SPEED. Its resilience to Status Ailments is 3 WISDOM, 3 STRENGTH, and 3 FORCE (The player does not have access to status-inflicting attacks yet.). It drops 1 EXP and $0 when defeated.
Ninten starts off with at least 5 in every stat. He overpowers the Lamp in every value.
Trivia
- This is an unskippable boss fight as Ninten starts in his chair and must open the door to initiate the fight. The second lamp in Minnie’s room, however, can be skipped entirely.
- The second lamp, like the first, will not reappear if the Doll is defeated even if it is left alive.
- When the Lamp is defeated, the text states that it doesn't move anymore but, different than the doll, it is not seen in the overworld after the battle.
- Lamps are one of the few enemies in Mother with an overworld sprite.
- In the companion guide, he is called "Lampstand" in Mother, and "Lamp" in EarthBound Beginnings and Mother 1 + 2.
- His description reads, "This enemy has the honor of being the first one the lead character fights. He flies around the room by way of the mysterious poltergeist activity. He's not that big a deal, but it is super scary to imagine what's to come.".
